I love Judy Nelson. Her relationship with Martina was probably Martina's most stable, most successful stage in life. It is sad but Martina, who claims to be a gay icon, used the most oppressive anti-gay laws of the states she lived in with her partners to deny them any support after breakups, even after she signed the agreements. She always wanted full commitment from her partners and no responsibility to them, always walking away as if these women were her objects that needed to be thrown away after she had no interest in them. Navratilova is a symbol of individualism and self-centredness. I advise people to read two books by Judy Nelson about their relationship: "Choices" and "Love Match: Nelson vs. Navratilova". It will give you a different perspective on such narrow-minded interpretation of this break up, like calling Judy a "gold digger".
If this is an agreed upon contract, then it is legally binding. If either of the partners did not agree, they did not have to sign. It's contracts 101. Nothing different than any other contract.
Judy absolutely deserved better from Martina ! It is really sad that Martina went back on her promises, and dragged it through the courts. Actually pretty disgusting, I am glad that Judy stuck up for herself.

And Nelson was already living a comfortable life as a country club doctor's wife. If Nelson was looking for just money, she could've dated any number of wealthy men in Ft. Worth. Judy was drop dead gorgeous in her years with Martina. Her and Martina are still friendly. Nelson was at Martina's wedding to her current wife.

I like Martina, although she seems to have a history of ending relationships badly. One of her former relationships said upon reflection it was Evert who was the stronger of the two. Meaning Chris held it together mentally while Martina was more of a petulant child. That comes through in her infamous breakups. A funny, interesting personality though!!!
So only 3 serious relationships. Big deal. Martina goes through her various array of girlfriends every 3 years max. She is now marrying a criminal who was part of killing someone, yet another relationship that will surely end badly, except in this case she might have finally bitten off more than she can chew and it might be more for her than the victimized other person as is usually the norm with her.

Over the years, a couple of my friends in the USA have been very good friends with Pam Shriver and another top player that i'm not allowed to mention and that's where I got a lot of my information. I quite agree with you and Martina's personal life is nobody's business but hers but when people don't know the FACTS about Martina and Judy and feel sorry for Judy, I cannot sit back and say nothing!. Also i'm fully aware that everyone is entitled to their opinion and i'm not on here to fight or argue with you especially as you're a huge Martina fan, but she's had her fair share of unfair criticism over the years and I just wanted to try and let people know that Judy Nelson was not a very nice person and Martina didn't need her to 'coach' her and 'sort out her personal finances' as Martina had those things covered. Back than i was a huge Martina fan and i followed them via Media and i think in this Case Judy deserved better - better than that. Martina is a great (although overrated, most rate her 3rd best of all time behind Serena and Graf when she really is more about 7th, overrated purposely because there is bias in her favor for being a lesbian and her self promotion) tennis player but a truly nasty and vile person. Judy is a wonderful woman and too much the evil, selfish, and disgusting Martina tried so hard to swindle out of the rightful money she deserved, and was partly successful.

Lost love can bring out the very worst in people - gay or straight. It's often not pretty - even from folks who otherwise might know better. A very broken (and ever brilliant!) Oscar Wilde wrote the object of his love, Lord Alfred Douglas (from a jail-cell in the 1890's), "Every great love has its tragedy, and now ours has too." Victorian England was not accepting of such relationships - which was why Wilde sat in a prison and died well before his time. The Martina and Judy saga ended in a much better and civilized way - as well it should - more than a century after the destruction of one of the most talented playwrights England ever saw.
Don't know why anyone would say Judy is a gold digger.. Martina is a child and horrid person..and of course this is not the last time she was sued. Judy left her family to move in with Martina, she contributed to her success. If they had an agreement it should have been kept. Unfortunately Navratilova thought she could just walk away. In turn she had her lawyers try to say that Judy presence was paid for in a contract.... like she was a paid whore. Disgusting, she lost her friendship with Rita Mae Brown over it, and I think Judy as well. Rita played mediator and got them to settle out of court. But was horrified by the defence that Martina tried to use to get out of her obligation and commitment.

Martina paid for EVERYTHING during their 7 year relationship. Judy's two sons and her parents travelled around the world on business class flights, five star hotels and in addition, had Judy on the payroll (she was earning $90,000 a year - a huge salary in the 1980s). Yes, Martina should have bought her a house but Judy certainly didn't deserve half her earnings based on a non legally binding contract.
That's the problem when you have a relationship with someone when you are absolutely loaded. I guess you will always wonder if they are with you for sincere reasons or just because you are rich.
I suppose it's the eternal problem of any relationship. Who earns most of the money and who focuses on the home. There are a lot of heterosexual women who suffered financially because they were the ones who stayed at home, looked after everything there, but didn't get paid.

It's the eternal problem that happens with every relationship. Who earns the money and who sorts out the home. There are many heterosexual women in years past who lost out financially with pensions etc because they were looking after the home. It would have all been a lot more straightforward if they had been allowed to marry back then.
