There was a 1994 interview in which Martina said that with hindsight, she was burnt out at the end of 1986 until mid 1989. She said when she was planning her schedule in 1987, she was looking at ways to play as little as possible, which should have given her a clue, but she never stepped back to take stock. Certainly, after 1986 she seemed to lose quite a bit of strength and speed.
She wasn't happy with winning Wimbledon AND the US Open that year? Plus being runner-up in Paris? Talk about your high standards - just like Federer on the men's side.
Very interesting year in women's tennis. Coming in, Martina barely lost matches between 1982-1986. Her W-L record over that time was somewhere around 96%. But in 1987, she went 59-8 (88%), looking very human, while Steffi had a 75-2 record (97%). However Steffi's youthful inexperience cost her in the two biggest matches of the year, the finals at Wimbledon and US Open, where Martina handed Steffi her sole two losses of the season.
