Amazing to hear what seems to be a good up and coming tenor. then hearing an old master blow him (and everyone else) away!

I heard Martinucci sing Calaf in the area di Verona. Singing easily over an orchestra of 150 people with almost no amplification. It's very big and bright in the top voice. The student is good. I agree with you that connection with the body should be maintained. To me it's a question of deciding where you want the most resonance. The balance between chiaro and Scuoro. Even del Monaco didn't carry as much weight in the body as this student does.

The student is far from being good. General issue with the clarity of his voice and sings out of pitch in the high notes....looks and sounds strained.

pt.2 He would need to drop unnecessary weight wherever possible and then he would sound like a dramatic tenor. Martinucci's demonstrations make that very clear.

You can´t say that he should sing lighter, because that can make him loose the connection to the body.I don´t think Martinucci sings lighter than his pupil I would say that he sings smaller? You probably say, what! he sounds at least twice as much? I say he does so because of the laser like acuti in his voice. A laser ain´t wide and big it´s sharp and narrow and that is what this guy needs to be. Not light but small and sharp.

I am alergic to the light is always right approuch. I think we mean the same thing it´s just that after having heard that I should lighten up the voice with no further instructions a hundred times I hate the term! In conseratory´s a Martinucci voice would be considered a much to heavy voice. Even Pavarotti would be critisized for a brutal approuch to singing! Singer´s like Peter Pears or Hans Peter Blochwitz or any baroque tenor is the ideal, no wonder roles like Radames is hard to fill.

Yes I agree but he is being encouraged to sing way too heavy a la Giocomini. Martinucci's few demonstrations makes that clear.

There is a tendency these days to have dramatic tenors sing like baritones with high notes. This student sings this way. And then Martinucci comes in opening up about three more resonances cavaities in the head and not only sounds brilliant but comes in on pitch with much visceral excitement and 3 times the volume. The student hears it and tries to go in that direction and it helps. The student would not be able to sing the whole role in the heavy voice he presents.

Which cavities do you mean? Martinucci did not sing in the mask, hence did not pursue the meaningless wish to 'fill cavities with sound'. Cavities other than the mouth one are meant for thermoregulation, mucus and such physiological stuff. You sing with the throat and the mouth.

Martinucci is so much louder! Why is that? Technique or vocal type?
@sobeto28
@sobeto28 10 лет назад
A perfect example of technique,how one who might have a clue of how to use it,doesn't necessarily means can't teach to other.
@inguaribileromantico4456
@inguaribileromantico4456 10 лет назад
Martinucci has much more resonance because he's using a mask resonance, lifting his cheekbones whereas the guy is keeping the sound too low which makes the pitch flat
