It’s a shame that Talvela died so young. I first heard him on the Rigoletto recording with Pavarotti and Milnes as a menacing Sparafucile.

I believe while dancing at his daughter's wedding- much like the scene from "4 Weddings a a Funeral"-such a loss.

A Karl Marx 'double'.What a voice-such sadness that he died so young. He must have been incredible on stage at 6 foot 9 inches tall.He was Wotan and Boris...thanks for this upload-it's a little treasure.

Not Wotan (too baritone-ish), but Hunding, Boris and King Philip II were among his favourite parts!

I've seen an old (German) Don Carlos where he played the Inquisitor and he just towered over Josef Greindl XD

Great singer. What really is incredible is his Russian. It is probably the best Russian I've ever heard from non-Slavic singer. There is virtualy no accent!

@BorisGodunov and he did Hunding as well, with Karajan

I hated Talvela's Hunding under Karajan. He sang softly and apologetically. The OPPOSITE of Hunding's personality. Karajan must have told him to be quiet, who knows why. Talvela was much better as Fasolt under Karl Bohm, at Bayreuth 1967.

i know the original version well, and it never had a boy-soprano part, even in the premiere of 1874, his role was sung by a woman

@vickersman I don't think Talvela ever sang Wotan... do you have any information on that? He's definitely more of a Fafner, Fasolt and Hagen.
