I had never heard of battoning until watching the you tube knife channels.I guess its for back packers who try to minimize their load I don't know, I never used anything except a hatchet. or better yet picking up hanging dead limbs like you said. We have a lot of white oak, hickory, pignut, and a lot of soft pine and cedar for starting a fire. Thanks very interesting video

Thank you for watching! I think some people just enjoy bashing a knife through wood, who knows.

Had one for a couple of years. The design of the handle is very good, grippy and the larger finger guard doesn't get in the way. The blade is good carbon steel and a good grind. The lightness of it makes it a great pack knife. I couldn't find any of the ones with the leather sheath when I was buying mine either and my only complaint is that plastic sheath. Luckily one of my other knives has a very good sheath that this knife fits better than the intended knife.

Gooat review. I own a Marttiini Silver Carbonix for about 2 years - a great litle companion. Hard to find someone on YT speeking such wise words about batoning. Greetings from Poland.

Thank you for watching! I just haven't found any need to baton a knife.

The Puukko inspired knives of Marttiini and Mora are some of the most functional knives available. One of the most beautiful knives ever made is the Tapio Wirkkal designed puukko. The Cold Steel Finn Bear is modeled after it.

Thank you for watching. I will have to check out the Tapio Wirkkai!

@@workbenchknifeandtool There is an example of it at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. My son's grandfather was a friend of Wirkkala who gifted him a knife and he passed it on to my son who uses it in his wood carving.

Great video. I remember years ago using Martiinni fillet knives. They also made a Laplander style hunting knife if I'm not mistaken. Nice looking knife. Cheers

I think I remember that Laplander knife! Thanks for watching!

marttinni - great knives - the only 'issue' that i came across was the handle width ... as the finger guard to rear is a little "tight" if you have large hands. a little bit of sandpaper and adjustment may be required ...

It's 1075 carbon steel, which is the same as what Böker uses in their classic line of knives.
@workbenchknifeandtool
@workbenchknifeandtool Год назад
Thanks for watching! X75Cr1 steel has greater amounts of sulpher and phosphorus compared to 1075 as well as the addition of 0.3-0.4 percent of chromium which aids in hardening and improves corrosion resistance. They are similar but X75Cr1 has some improvements.

You can check the end of the tang with a small magnet.
@workbenchknifeandtool
@workbenchknifeandtool Год назад
Yeah, that kinda works depending on how much the tang tapers...

Just can't get past the hultafors as the best cost to dollar ratio.. I like all moras too, disappointed in the garberg though, its full tang only seems to offer more unneeded weight. The more skilled you are the less you need to do idiot tasks like batoning, so I've learned now with a bit of experience... lol

I will have to give the Hultafors a look! Thanks for watching!

@@workbenchknifeandtool nice specifically the heavy duty one. So far it's been the most unbreakable knife made according to Joe X's YT channel (he destroys knives). And the thing is only 14 dollars. Made from Sk5 carbonsteel. I have a hatchet made from sk5 and it's an insanely good (japan made) steel.

If it's more than $20 I'm going to buy it more a knife

Thank you for watching! Well, it's 21 dollars on Amazon so maybe it's a Mora for you. I own both and at these prices, why not try out both and see which one you like best?
