Mature Christians are sanctified Christians, they are the ones that have studied the Scriptures diligently, listened to deep completative expository preaching/sermons, they have studied theology and doctrine and have learned what to believe and WHY they should believe it. You do not mature as a believer through shallow and unapplied knowledge. True Christian maturity is knowledge applied. -------- A bunch of bad, unskilled, untrained, and unqualified people that call themselves Pastors are teaching many people like him a bunch of superficial, surface level, feel good messages, and the result is that those under that preaching never come to know the Biblical God, they're given a false uninformed view of God, then this wrongly understood God ends up disappointing them because they have/had a false god, and this false god is inconsistient, he doesn't seem to do anything, but of course idols have no power. ------- Listen, when what happened to me happened to me back in December 2014, I understood the importance of deep expositional preaching and the like. By God providence I was able learn a lot at a rapid pace. Now, I'm not exaggerating when I say this, but within my first year, I listened to well over a 1,000 hours of deep, sound theological expository preaching. So, I basically theres 52 Sunday services a year +/- 2-3 for holidays and such. Doing the math, I essentially have listened to 20 some years of sermons within basicly a years time. How was I able to pull it off? By God's grace I have local semi truck driving job which leaves me with tons of time to listen to sermons, and Christian radio shows, and the like. On top of that, I understand and was zealous to learn it, I Kew how important it was. I probably learned more doctrine, theology, and apologetic material in my first 1-3 years than most people who call themselves Christians do in their entire lifetime (and this is not boasting, it's actually frustrating because I think to myself, what's wrong with me. I've learned so much that I am absolutely confident to the point of it being impossible for me to doubt whether the Bible is true or not. Ill give some of the evangelicals world top problems; anti-intellectualism, and in its place you have sensual worldly emotionalism. You can't love a God that you don't know, and how do you know Him? You learn to know Him by diligently studing His Word, doctrine, theology. Soooo many people caught up in that momement are driven by emotion. This reminds me of the dangerous nature of the music from Hillsong, they basically have Barney the Dinosaur (I love you, you love me) level of depth to their music, it helps people to get into a emotional frenzy, but there's no substance to what's being sung. All you have is a bunch of really generic statements about God and Christ! Don't tell me some broad generalities about God, you say He loves us? How about lyrics that gives us SPECIFICITY/detail about HOW He loves us, what He's done, how He's achieved it, you goto the Scripture and see what He has specifically done, how He did it, what it cost, the myriads of examples of His patience, mercy, and grace towards us, and think about how praise can be heightened when you're reminded of those things and that all you deserve is Hell, you have dishonored God a thousand different ways thousands of different times, and since one sin is worthy of death, you should be dead, but God's love is shown in this, that yet while we were sinners Christ died for us. THATS THE LOVE OF GOD, not some sentimental type of garbage! If God loves you, it has absolutely nothing to do with your character or anything about you. Actually, apart from Christs work, and then Christ dweing in you and having been adopted into the house hold of God, if it wasn't for that, you are seen by God as someone who has no redeemable value whatsoever, if you've repented and put your trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as your only hope of salvation, God will love you INSPITE of yourself. Now, take all that wealth of deep theological and doctrinal knowledge that i wrote out, and you could create praise music that actually stirs the mind in a way that actually helps people. Emotion should not drive the mind, it's the mind that should drive the emotions. Deep truths in music is what should move the emotions, not the other way around. Otherwise you end up with people who have a zeal for God but not in accordance with knowledge.
