I love how this person compared 2 people who are kinda similar and calls them copycats, like goddamn you try and make a superhero universe without reusing powers. The only ones I’d agree with is similar backstory, suit/imagery or name.
There are so many that are undeserving, but I think I’m most offended by the Black Canary/ Black Widow comparison, bc asside from being “woman who fight good” they have literally nothing in common. The photo they used wasn’t even of black canary in costume, it was just some video game frame out of context to make them look more similar.
@@BeeruzChryslerMHA isn’t really a good comparison. Anime’s pay their animators slave labor costs, but comics from the 40’s - 70’s were limited by both what they could affordable pay an artist to re-draw hundreds of times and what colour inks they could get, so designs had to be really simplified.
Some of these aren’t even rip offs, like how is Zatanna a rip off of Scarlett witch when Zatanna’s character is literally being the daughter of the magician superhero Zatara who debuted in 1938.
Yeah most of this video is misconceptions.... There are some that are totally validated ones though. I'd say half of this list is wrong though and is just "popular" opinion/ perception. I.m.o.
Some of these were within months, and I would feel better to say that given times to produce and then publish, a lot of these ideals were being thought up around the same time as each other rather than a blatant copy cat scenario. At least that is the way I see some of these. It is also interesting that in a ton of these cases that Marvel or DC both seem to take the un popular ideas of the other and make then a more popular character in their universe. So honestly whether or not the ideas are being copied or just similar, it is nice to see that all ideas are getting limelight time regardless who it is from. Which in the end means the Artist and Writers win the day overall, and I can get behind that anytime!
If it were a MONTH apart...i might agree with you. But, it's more than obvious these copies were fast tracked in reaction to the original...like a knee jerk reaction of "we gotta have ONE OF THOSE!" 😊
Wanda literally uses magic like powers. So, not sure what the point is. That would be saying EVERY mutant can't have a copy that's not a mutant. And Wanda is a much better character...that is...till recently
Just because two characters look alike and have similarities doesn't mean they copy each other they are just coincidences due to the nature of superhero story making
Some of these don't really make much sense. Red Skull is a Nazi who was part of a super soldier experiment gone wrong. Black Mask is an American crime boss who wears a black skull mask. The only similarity they have is the whole skull head deal. That's it. Moon Knight and Batman. Moon Knight is a dude with multiple personalities and is the Avatar of an Egyptian God. Sometimes he's the Mercenary Marc Spectre. Other times he's the gentleman Steven Grant, and sometimes the sadistic cab driver Jack Lockley. Batman is a millionaire playboy who dresses up as a bat every night to beat the crap out of criminals because he saw his parents get killed right in front of him when he was 8. Black Widow and Black Canary. One's a Russian spy with no powers. The other is a meta human who can scream really loud. Not much in common.
Actually your half right about Black Widow, she is a Russian spy trained in the Red Room since she was a child and like Captain America she took the Super Soldier Serum but just in a lesser form of it. She was born in 1928 and took the serum in 1958 making her life span longer, she's also much stronger than the average person. This in no way however is a comparison to Black Canary.
It’s amazing how DC has a lot of its main characters in the 1940s and marvel started to really get going in the 1960s . So that’s a two decade gap the nostalgia belongs to both but DC goes deeper in nostalgia to me
DC is the main reason Marvel exists, and the only reason MArvel is that big now is because they started making different things with Spider-Man, X-Men and F4

Knew Thanos was a copy of Darkseid way back when he first showed up. More than a few comic fans thought so too. Between the two, Darkseid is my favorite because he isn’t insane, and has a good idea of what to do and how to do it. Just my meager observation…..
@Blaze i did learn the material, clearly unlike you. I started out with DC as a child, before realising that Marvel was just so much more powerful, and Doctor Strange managed to become black priest strange in the last days of magic, literally saving magic, the best thing dr fate could do was rescue spectre. Go read a comic my guy dr fate is limited and his magic follows rules, dr strange transcends those rules, allowing him to do and become many things such as completely immortal.
@Blaze order vs chaos as many times have proven they are both limited, dr fate saved spectre in an early comic, and yes that isn’t just any old feat, but saving all of magic, and commanding a race that beat the true darkhold scarlet witch is something far more impressive, especially since Wanda could easily wipe spectre and fate, but when she got ganged up against the black priests she wasn’t able to win. Also u bringing up artefacts that fate used which are nothing compared to things like the infinity gauntlet and the agamotto equipment. The thing is Dr fate hasn’t got as many amazing feats as dr strange, even if his helmet is thousands of years old, when you actually take a look at things like their powers, Dr Fate has mastered the mystic arts (apart from chaos magic but that’s bc he didn’t think it existed), whereas every time Fate tries to do something with his magic, it imbalances the universe with the whole order and chaos thing, which limits him
@Blaze it literally is a debate, just bc you seen a few "marvel fanboys" doesnt mean that they are right. As a kid I grew up with both, and the characters from the marvel universe are just much more powerful for 3 reasons. 1. the writers arent afraid to make their characters do crazy powerful things 2. the marvel and dc universes alr had crossovers and marvel just showed to be much more powerful 3. DC comics is just so limited and restrained, even down to the presence himself, being a judo-christian god, which gives him limits, compared to TOAA who is completely fictional
@@kl9686 it may look like that now. But back then when the fictional world was almost nothing compared to 2022. Today you introduce an original comicbook character, tommorow the competeing company releases a similar character with similar looks, abilities, fighting style, persona, etc. Its not that difficult to figure out the obvious unless you have a stick stuck in your muffins.
@@docholliday2571 Please. The handful of original characters introduced in the past 10 years have been demonstrable failures. Today's DC and Marvel are creatively impotent, relying instead on the lazy practice of gender/race swaps and retcons of truly original characters created by real visionaries. Which is why the comic book industry continues to collapse. Swallow THOSE muffins, cowboy, then find yourself a sunset to disappear into. Cheeky prick.
@@betweentheripples8847 Gender/race swaps??? Marvel's Captain Marvel was a male character when it first appeared. B* Please... Runner and Godspeed is a huuuuge stretch. They're speedsters who both have gold in their color scheme. Except Runner has ONLY gold in his color scheme, whereas Godspeed's suit is mostly white. And they share exactly zero design similarities, their origins are nowhere close to the same, their motives and end goals are nothing alike. You'd be better off pairing Runner with The Flash, and even then their only similarities are that both of their designs kinda make nods to the god Hermes/Mercury (and not even the same nods; Flash has the winged boots/helm, with later versions having the wings eventually reshaped to lightning bolts and a mask instead of a Hermes/like cap, while Runner has a statue-like body and a loincloth).
What is interesting about this video is that a lot of times the "copycat" character tends to be the most recognizable or sucesfull one. It seems like the creators really improve on the flaws of the original idea
@@camdakill6007 Yeah, but it's a shame that aquaman is more popular, he even has a movie. But I prefer Namor and can't wait to see it in black panther wakanda forever
Also anything i read on The Vision says hes based on the Timely Comic character of the same name and they were published by Marvel in 1940. And he looks like a cross between The Vision, Watcher and Martian Manhunter
Actually I disagree with Doom Patrol and X-Men. They were launched almost at the same time, and is not possible know who was the one with the original idea, because a lot of people that worked in marvel worked in DC at the same time
Maybe you are right. But If you looking of the characters name from the villans and the similarities of the two leaders how is on the wheelchair are exactly the same
I thought so too but if you look at the stories and taglines marvel clearly copied. doom patrol had the tag "the worlds strangest superheroes" and the xmen had "the strangest superheroes of all". then there's the obvious leader in the wheelchair. and the villains they come up against, doom patrol has the legion of evil and xmen have the legion of evil mutants. No hate, its just its more than just an idea that was copied from dc
And like you need some time like a few months to make a comic you can't create the same guys if you became with comic when the other didn't even drop ywt
Their suit design, them being male or female, their powers all is considered before Marvel or DC create the copy character. It's not just a pure coincidence.

I'd have said Silver Surfer was the Marvel version of Martian Manhunter, they're both super powerful aliens who originally started off as enemies to their respective teams but would eventually become heroes.
I love how both creators of swamp thing and man thing were roommates and just decided to create the same character but with the specific formula of Marvel and Dc for each creation... lmao

Your image captioned as Commander Steel was actually of the Shield, of MLJ Comics, created in 1939, copied by Marvel in making Captain America (plus his association with S.H.I.E.L.D.). You should compare the Shield's sidekick and Bucky as well. Did Jack Kirby invent both Silver Surfer and Black Racer? Of course, Doll Man came before both the Atom and Antman.

I think it should have been like… Wanda vs Raven Vision vs Martian manhunter Their abilities seem more similar than the ones here. Anyway, I love them all.
I agree, especially with Vision and Martian Manhunter though one is not a robot they are similar in appearance most of the time, they also have similar powers, and they are both a part of their respective universe's premier superhero teams. On another note Wanda and Raven are much better camparison than Wanda and Zatanna especially when it comes to their power sets, I wouldn't of actually thought of that if it weren't for this comment so thanks. 🙂
Interesting comparisons. I think the "copycat" discussion is pulling teeth, but I like that there are origin times for characters that obviously are inspired by similar aesthetic. Gotta say would've compared Black Panther to Wildcat, Red Lion is the African version of Deathstroke. Although they look similar the characters are quite different.
@C p um the flash save the entire universe from the motherbox and from darkseid getting the anti life equation that would control every life on the universe
Who wants to see a football game, boxing match, or ufc fight where the opposing forces aren't trying to kill each other? I don't. Copy on and keep up the competition. The amlaglam universe was a great read for me.
Zatanna and Scarlet Witch are so different, so no one copied. P.S it's not too easy to make a comics so they couldn't copy each other in span of just 5-6 months.
There is a DC version of Spider-Man named Black Spider. He’s a super villain and a member of the Secret Society of Super Villains and sometimes is a part of the Suicide Squad. He’s often paired off against Batman.
I don't agree with any of these comparisons cuz if a company is designing a character with similar looking from other superheroes, they have to take permission from the og. That's why I find it illogical.
Excepting Superman & Batman, it would be better if the characters' creators' names were displayed, as well. How many times would a name appear on each "side"?
Good video but how do you know that DC/Marvel or copycats when they just could have released the character a little late when they had the idea for maybe a year
Vision is literally based on the original androud Human Torch, Jim Hammond, who first appeared in Marvel Comics #1 October 1939. Ultron later turned the Human Torch into The Vision.
While there are certainly some copycats, and both sides are guilty of it…most of these are just heavily inspired. Which I still don’t think is right, the level of inspiration they take from it. But…whatever.
Flash was the original one, and all the Speedster of dc like black racer godspeed and all carry the idea of flash and not the characters of Marvel, if anything resembles then Marvel took inspiration from flash not vice-versa
To be fair I dont consider some of these as copycats.. Like for example the catwoman, so nobody can make a cat lady superhero because somebody already came up with it?? Im surprised theres no wolverine, whos like one of the most famous marvel characters
After discussing this stuff with my son this really brings home the comic competition that happened way before the films. Truth is would either have been as good without competition from the other. Look at Messi/ ronaldo blur/ oasis Churchill / Johnson 🤣
That vision and red tornado thumbnail is the furthest from true. They look similar but share very different powers and backstories. Most of the others are pretty spot on though.
Actually, Captain Marvel was Shazam earlier in DC but the right to that name somehow went to Marvel and they made the Character with that name, to retain the rights.......So, technically Captain Marvel was a DC character first which is now known as Shazam.
I gotta wonder what the criteria for "copycat" is here. Black Racer and Silver Surfer for example have very little in common aside from their name. Also, some of these characters weren't owned by DC when they were created, but were acquired later and incorporated into DC after the Crisis on Infinite Earths.
In my opinion, it is not appropriate to compare the Falcon with a hawkman, they are nothing alike, the Falcon must be compared with Batwing, here there is a similarity in both mechanical wings, and a hawkman with an angel (archangel)
4:17 They are nothing alike 😂 except that they both use magic. And also people seem to forget that Zatanna is a legacy character. Her dad kind of has the same powers as her and he debuted the same comic that superman came out in.
I was wondering what you're gonna come up with, cause I've never seen a similar to iron man character in dc Closest to Iron man would be a mix of batman and cyborg, but definitely more batman
Love this idea but can't be using add in b level or c listers to compare copy cat dearhlok VS cyborg to different background not my favorite characters to begin with but a example for instance one was built by alien future tech , the one is a science government future experiment and deathlok is like a analog computer VS a smart phone 🤣 Like vision and red tornado vision is the better by far
Gawd, Man-Thing and Swamp Thing both came out in 1971. If you want to be picky, you could say, "Groot" (and yes I know the Heap, which itself is from Sturgeon's story, "It".
Falcon is at least a person who uses tech to fly, which is similar to Hawkman: but yeah, Marvel's copycat of Black Canary was actually Mockingbird, excusing the Banshee-like superpowers.
Black Widow, is a Russian spy trained in the Red Room since she was a child and like Captain America she took the Super Soldier Serum but just in a lesser form of it. @@bsimester2010 I knew all that, which is why I knew she wasn't a Canary rip off. But even without all you said, you can look at them and see nothing similar. They are both females with the with "Black" in their names. It all ends there.
I personally like both Marvel and DC in terms of creativity, While there are some that are questionable , it’s kinda hard to make an original superhero with powers or skills that someone doesn’t already have , I don’t think it’s bad thing unless their origins are too similar but it’s rare to see a superhero with the same powers unless related or from another universe entirely.
Here are just some of the many discrepancies that are within this video. Although (Bane and Crossbones) may have similar looks... That's about the only thing the two have in common. (Bane and the Marvel villain Nuke) would have been a far more accurate comparison. Same with (Ghost Rider and Atomic Skull)! The two may look similar. But their powers and origins are completely different. In fact their fiery skull look is also predated by a Golden Age superhero from Timely Comics (which would later become Marvel), known as ''The Blazing Skull''. (Ghost Rider and DC.s Etrigan The Demon) would have been a much better comparison. (Green Arrow and Hawkeye) were both inspired by a Golden Age hero who first appeared in Funny Pages #21 (1938) named ''The Arrow''. And (Swamp Thing and Man Thing) were both inspired by ''The Heap''.
I'm also confused about captain marvel.on one hand I read Shazam captain marvel appear in whiz comics 1939 issue 2 and also in marvel super heroes issue 12,1967 and they both show in Wikipedia the Shazam captain marvel.
@@drcokepepperIt's a long and complicated story. But it can all be traced back to the year 1939. To a company called ''Fawcett Publications''. Who started their own comics division. In order to capitalise on the popularity of characters such as ''Superman'' and ''Batman''. At that time (Marvel comics) was known as (Timely Comics). Fawcett set out to create a ''Superman-esque'' character named “Captain Marvel”. Who first appeared in ''Whiz Comics'' #2 (February 1940). His name was (shortened from ''Captain Marvelous''. After they were unable to secure the rights to the name they originally wanted to use “Captain Thunder”. The comic turned out to be a huge success, even outselling ''Superman''. Fawcett's (Captain Marvel) actually went on to become the first comic book superhero to be adapted for the silver screen. In the 1941 Republic serial, (The Adventures of Captain Marvel). However, in 1953 the company stopped selling the comics after DC.Comics, sued Fawcett for copyright infringement. Suggesting the character (Captain Marvel) was a blatant rip off of ''Superman''. (Mainly due to his appearance, abilities and alter-ego ''Billy Batson''). Who also worked in journalism. After a lengthy legal process, Fawcett eventually paid DC comics a settlement. And agreed that they would discontinue the stories. Sales had dropped during that time. Making it an easier decision than it might have once been) - and that might have been that, if not for the unexpected resurgence of superhero comics. Which we now know as the (Silver Age of comics) in the mid-1960s. No longer able to publish the character due to the settlement... DC comics decided that they would license (Captain Marvel and his “Marvel family” of sidekicks). Adding them to their own stable of heroes. And eventually acquiring the characters outright. Unbenounced to DC comics at that time, in 1972. Marvel Comics (now existing under its familiar name)... Had also created and copyrighted its own character named ''Captain Marvel''. An alien warrior named ''Mar-Vell'' who made his debut in ''Marvel Super-Heroes'' #12 (December 1967). And fought alongside the heroes of Earth using his (Kree abilities and powerful nega-band technology). DC still kept the character name but retitled the ongoing comic book “Shazam!,”. The magic word said by young Billy Batson to transform into his Superhero alter ego and back again. Basically, while the character was still called ''Captain Marvel'', any comics and merchandise related to him were just branded with the (Shazam!) name and logo. And DC comics had enough leeway to keep using the character. At one point DC even attempted to subtitle the series as “The original Captain Marvel''. But Marvel comics sent out a cease-and-desist letter which led them to change it to “The World’s Mightiest Mortal”.
