The Sentry is rumored to be played by Steven Yeun in Marvel's upcoming Thunderbolts film! And since I love the Sentry more than Marvel ever would, I've decided to remaster the origin of The Sentry, Robert Reynolds, as well as go into detail about the fascinating origin he held as "Marvel's First Superhero".
▸ Sentry (Robert "Bob" Reynolds) is a superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee, with uncredited conceptual contributions by Rick Veitch, the character first appears in The Sentry #1 (September 2000).

The Sentry and The Void make such a powerful symbolic pair. The Sentry is like the high, the powerful feeling that you chase, and The Void is the fall when it wears off, the hangover, the dark desire for more.

Sentry, and Moon Knight, are two characters used as the vehicle to speak on mental health issues. Sentry = the high Void = withdrawals/dark side of addiction Along with all the mental health issues involved, as well

I feel like they cast Steven Yuen was picked for his role in invincible. I think he is a great actor, and bunch of actors have gotten buff to play parts they didn’t seem like a fit for, but it does feel like a strange choice. Great actor though.

Him saying "Okay" really shouldn't have destroyed his marriage. Even ignoring his mental illness, his response shows respect for her [expressed] desires. I mean for goodness sakes he kicked the dog. It seems logical for him to let her leave for a few days just so she can be safe from what his episode might lead to. Now, clearly she's bothered most about him not seeking proper help. However, she HAS to be aware of the fact that his illness really takes the reigns away from him to get there on his own. Honestly, this type of conflict has so much more nuance. I think it would be great to have a film in a similar vein to fight club about the Sentry.

Watch Sentry 2012 short film on youtube, I think you'd really like it and yeah I like Lindy because she's not a Lois Lane copy in that she is understanding but not unconditionally and actually leaves Robert in frustration along with the fact that she's not actually attracted to his normal form but rather his Sentry form and I find that so humanizing because she's not perfect just like Robert isn't.

@@jameswitt108 the short filn didn't blow me away. In fact, I find it a bit dissapointing they didn't portray the Sentry and Lindy as being middle aged. They both look like they're in their early 30s and that poor casting pulled me out of it entirely.

yeah that is grade A bad casting if it turns out to be true. He lacks the physicality for one. Which is a huge part of the Sentry Character and the Void. He is too tiny. He definitely won't be able to dominate a scene like the character would have to. Marvel will probably significantly dumb down the character in several ways and they have been on a hot streak with sub par quality.

Hands down my favorite Marvel character and favorite origin story... Hopefully Steven Yeung is not playing him, even though I love Steve. Rob is supposed to look like a run down junkie at his worst, and the epitome of commercial White Jesus at his best. 😂 Someone like Logan Marshall-Greene (Upgrade / Prometheus), or Alexander Skarsgard (The Northman) would be perfect. Especially since Alex's father is already a part of the MCU (Stellan Skarsgard)

I've always enjoyed heroes like the Sentry, Hulk, Iron Man, Thor etc more than the Paragons like Superman. Hulk has Dissociative Identity Disorder. Iron Man has alcoholism. Thor has the weight of being a Prince on his shoulders, and having to fight his brother and try to match up to his father. The Sentry has Schizophrenia. And these things make them REAL. You feel their struggles and the weight of their lives. Heroes might stand for grand values, or be protectors of those they care about. But they're still flawed in some way. They have to pick up the pieces of their lives and try to do MORE. That's what it means to be a hero. It's not being invulnerable.. it's having the strength to keep going, even if it hurts.

I love how you went back and reintroduced Sentry(Bob). The character does need explanations like you did in this video. Marvel’s The Sentry is technically an adult comic, targeting a mature fan base/audience. The concept of mental health & drug addiction would go right over the heads of young readers. They’ll perceive him as just a crazy guy with powers instead realizing the real life struggles humans actually deal with.

Using someone like the Sentry the writers can ask fun little philosophical questions… Is the Sentry to be sympathized with or feared? Is someone who’s not fully in control of themselves still at fault for wrongdoing? Will there be disagreement among heroes on how to deal with the Sentry? That’s just my thoughts, crazy broken people can make for great characters and stories.

Steven Yeun could kill it as the sentry and I’m game for that change but, I think reed richards and magneto are characters you should not swap. Magneto’s history is what makes him who he is. Sentry was forgotten hence an unknown actor is a good choice, someone with Angel/ Devil face expression at the same time, someone charismatic, Sentry should stand out of the Avengers, set new era of the comic book films, this is the most important character /actor to be cast since Iron man, TristanTarabas is my number one choice

He's "out of phase which the current timeline", whatever that means. We never get a better explanation than that. Some versions say his powers come from the sun but I think that's just them following through with the superman homage

I love that in the last day the story has been "Steven Yeun to join Thunderbolt's in unknown role" to less than a day later "Steven Yeun is Sentry." If he is Sentry, then cool, I'm all for it. He's a damn good actor and I believe he has the depth required to pull off a really tortured dual nature role like Sentry. I'm not sure he is going to be Sentry, or will be a heavily changed take on it, but I'm here for it no matter what they go with. Just happy to have another great actor in the MCU.

@@onlyoneep Yesterday all the talk was an unknown character. I think things like this can get way out of control because if one person guesses and reports it then everyone else is going to follow suit so they don't miss out on revenue by not competing for clicks on a potential hot story. We've had so many false "insider" MCU stories they probably outnumber the legitimate leaks by now. This just feels like one of those to me, but I hope not because I think Yuen's a great actor and would do a fantastic job. I may be wrong, but if I was a betting man I would put my money on him not being Sentry.

Once they introduce Sentry, they should also do that he's always been there part of his character. Maybe Marvel should tease a throwback post about 2012's The Avengers but Sentry was there, or he had a cameo in the first Iron-Man but just like in the comics everyone forgot.

As such, they are and should be the dominant race to show up in films because, in reality, there are more white people in the US than any other demographics combined. Second, if you want representation, choose characters who are already the racial categories you want. As for you take on Tom Cruises being “The Last Samurai”… no he wasn’t. If you watch the movie, the actual Last Samurai is Katsumoto, not Tom Cruise. Ryan Reynolds played Hal Jordan, who is the original Green Lantern from comics. John Stewart is not the first Earth-based Lantern, Hal is. So this argument was completely wrong lol

So I remember the outrage when they changed the Sorcerer Supreme from a man of Asian descent to a white woman. Isn’t this the same thing? Steven Yun is a good actor however I am looking for a comic accurate portrayal. The Sentry is a Iconic character his looks and appearance is iconic. It matters as much as people don’t want to admit it but it’s visual art. However I’m just one fan and it’s my own opinion.
