I know some people would prefer complete comic accuracy, but I love the pseudo-realistic approach that Hasbro takes for their head sculpts. It gives the line a unique and (IMO) very interesting aesthetic
I wouldn’t mind the pseudo realistic take on the face sculpts with the photo real print tech if it was done better. I feel like it’s very hit or miss and it makes a lot of faces look really fuzzy and old sometimes. so if they could perfect it, I would probably like it a lot more, but until then I’m gonna continue to head swap my print tech heads for my handpainted ones
@@LosMSR I like it. I don’t know what more to tell you. Don’t let my enjoyment of it stop you though. If you don’t like it, fair enough, don’t let others try to force you to like something you don’t enjoy. Live and let live
I did the same, and then I emailed to see if they were going to adjust the price or cancel the preorder, and the response I got was that they didn't intend to change orders already placed.
The Phoenix force looks amazing, but the figure itself I prefer the Mafex look. ML Phoenix neutral face reminds me of Mary Jane which is okay, but the other head sculpt anytime I see Medusa come up in my mind. Great review as always.
I prefer ML one over mafex. Not judging by how much pricier it is, but it just don't look as good, esthetically, and proportionate. The accessories are lack luster as well. But everyone is entitled to their own opinions.
The Mafex Jean is AMAZING and has such great aspects to the figure. The paint job, the healthy/natural woman's body form, costume, color scheme, and facial expressions. The ML looks cheaply made, creepy/sickly body proportions, really bad face paint(she looks like the Jean from X-Men 3), and odd green color scheme for the costume. The ML Phoenix bird accessory looks GREAT and would be worth buying for that piece alone.
I had been wondering why the green isn't as bright as the costume is on the comic pages, but then I saw the cover of issue 101, and I think it's possibly based off of the shade of green used there. It would also explain the use of gold on her limbs (since that's kinda how the costume was shaded on the cover), instead of them using yellow like the Retro Dark Phoenix figure.
While I am a steadfast stalwart waifu supporter, I'm only getting this figure for the firebird. I'm an absolute nut for mythology and mythological creatures.
I'm mixed on this one. I was super stoked at the original announcement, but now seeing reviewers with it in hand, I kind of want the Mafex version more. The faces and hair just look better on that one, the gloves and boots are sculpted on, and the green is the right color. However, it's twice the price and comes with very little in the way of accessories. Though, I would still get this one because the phoenix effect would go great with it regardless.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Ironically, the MAFEX Phoenix doesn't even jive well with the MAFEX X-Men to me, because she's so Byrne inspired, it kind of clashes with the Jim Lee aesthetic the X-Men have. She does have a reused headsculpt of Jean's unmasked look, but it's in more vivid colours - even the skin tone on Phoenix is a more comic book peach that goes back to the Cockrum and Byrne art. Stylistically, I don't find her to work with Legends. She looks... flatter? Something in the colour choices and bold colours just doesn't fit the darker colours and recent head sculpts and print jobs. It lacks a depth in the face. That isn't a bad thing, though, as again, it calls me back to Byrne, Cockrum, Smith... just the days of simpler inks and colouring. I'm comparing her to the Warbird, Sharon, Rogue, Crimson Baroness, Spin Master Aloy, and Scarlett on my desk and I'll stick with "flat" as my descriptor for the face and costume paint. I think she's a beautiful piece and I hope we get more classic X-Men to match the era, but it's oft forgotten Medicom is an artist company that makes expensive art pieces outside of their toys, and Phoenix stands out to me as much as any Sideshow piece with an intentional style. If I were a primary Legends collector, I'd stick with the Legends Phoenix and force display. I am not, so I have both. But of all the Mafex out there to fudge into a Legends display, I'd say she isn't worth the spend. Compare her barebones hands and belt accessories to Gambit, Magneto, and Storm for the cost.
@@DesperadoDingo I don't know if I can totally agree. She fits right in with Hasbro's Byrne Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Wolverine, and First Appearance Storm despite being from a different line.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork That's allowed, it's your shelf and spend. I own all those figures and prefer either Legends Jean against them. I've given you some info, dowutchyalike.
I know you don’t collect many 1/6th scale figures but as an x-men fan you need to see the hono studios wolverine in person. Both the tiger stripe and brown are close to perfection
I'm glad I'm not the only one that canceled the MAFEX Phoenix. I like the proportioning and sculpt of the body on this one better. They seem more heroic, strong and feminine. Of course we'd all prefer to pay less for our collections, but consider the standalone is almost the size of two figures and considering this comes with an extra head and hands, I am actually okay with the price. If she came with 2 more pairs of hands, a third more neutral/somber head using the swappable hair style, then this figure would be essentially perfect. The female figures do need to start coming with swappable hair, I think Ms. Marvel does, and that second/third hair needs to allow the figure to look up. Thanks for the review.
I preordered this fig from BBTS when they listed it for $34.99! I usually never do Marvel Legends preorders, but that price was banging, and for some reason I knew to jump on it.
I so looking forward to this one. Plus I was able to get in at BBTS when they had it for $34.99 and BBTS already confirmed they would honor that price. So the cheaper price is even better for me. I want to find my Toybiz Phoenix base just to compare the two.
Would've been cool if they had included a head that looked like the Dauterman Jean Grey on the side box art. Hopefully they're saving that for a Hellfire Gala Jean.
Diggin' the new Phoenix fig and big old Flame Bird accessory but yeah, the set probably should have been maybe $10 less. Love it all the same. Would really be nice to get an updated Uncanny X-Men Cyclops figure. I'm greedy though, so I want a single release AND a battle damaged 2-pack of Scott and Jean from the cover of X-Men 137...PHOENIX MUST DIE!
@@juansanchez209 I agree with you on that. Still don’t believe that the phoenix base should cost as much as a $25 figure by itself more like $15 to make it more in line with other deluxe like colossus at $40 but it does look pretty good
It's kind of funny how people are saying this figure is expensive but at the same time the Mafex one is DOUBLE and doesn't even have the fire bird or any kind of effects and kind of looks uglier. 50 bucks is a hard pill to swallow but it's better than the Mafex that just comes with heads and hands, kind of crazy to see Legends get one over on Mafex.
I just started reading Astonishing X-Men and man, I need to scratch that X-Men figure itch. I’ve been pretty happy with my 90’s X-Men display and I try to be one and done with characters in my Legends display, but between that Astonishing Logan, this Phoenix and recently finding the Giant-Size Storm at a crazy low price, I’m thinking of scrapping a uniform team and just going with some standout/favourite designs for each character, a bit of each era here and there.
I got lucky I bought this from bbts the second the preorder came out They had it marked at $35 on accident They’re holding true to that price so I’m getting this for $35!
I just recently got the Jada toys ken since he was at my target and I thought the hair would get in the way of posability but it’s some kind of soft almost rubbery plastic that doesn’t get in the way AT ALL. I think that’s what all toy companies should do for long hair figures
The same can be said with the material they use for the clothes. M. Bison's lower shirt half doesn't "fight" the legs when they're raised up. They're honestly just killing it through and through.
I have the neutral heard from the dark Phoenix toys-R-us two pack that might fit on that body I also have a spare black widow from the target deluxe that people have been swapping and that looks great as well.
I am lucky enough to have the Bowen design dark pheonix statue which gives me a great Dark Phoenix effect, that works great on the 1/12 figure, so i will give this a miss and wait for a solo release. However it is a nice effect to have.
You see Robo, when some collectors & a company love a character very much, they inject their plastic into some molds repeatedly. And that's where these bodies come from!
Galactus opened or no? The flame attachment for Nova is a bit wonky. Wonky in Galactus’s hand and if sitting on a shelf. This could look nice with her. I didn’t buy the Marvel Select one either. It seemed more orange if I remember it. I have a few Toybiz ones too. I’ve accumulated quite a few fiery bases and effects. Flame bases give a pop to action figures for sure.
I was gonna cancel my mafex Phoenix but i decided to keep it & now it shipped out this morning. I'm definitely looking for accessories to go with the mafex Phoenix & so far i'm wondering if the mafex captain Marvel accessories fit her along with if it can fit in the marvel legends Phoenix force stand & support it. I actually like the Marvel legend red eye Phoenix head better on the Marvel legends dark Phoenix body than the head it came with. So I might just do a switch. That Cyclops definitely should've already had a 2.0 because I'm still using the toybiz Sentinel wave Cyclops for a giant size X-Men team
That side split in the hair kinda bothers me a bit. She looks good, otherwise. That angry face is definitely going on a Dark Phoenix body. I hope I can find this. The only time I've seen Angel was that Saga Toys shop we met, which closed with little warning back in April. No word on a new home...yet? I'm chasing ghosts in Target's system, as apparently the new Cap Falcon and Angel share the same sku? At least I've SEEN Angel, unlike every other ML BAF wave this year. #NoMoreExclusives!!
I really love all the great effects and of course the killer Phoenix piece but I'm just not feeling the figure. The Mafex Phoenix is more comic accurate with prettier head sculpts and the figure overall look, proportions and design is much better IMO. Still the ML is a better value in offering alot more and a much cheaper price point.
I live in New Zealand, so pricing is wayyy different when it comes to distribution here, but I was curious to know if the price of this set was the equivalent of buying two individually released figures in the US? I'm just wondering if Hasbro is trying to justify the price by trying to pass off the Phoenix piece as a figure too? (I mean, technically it could be its own separate figure, since the Phoenix is the true form of this particular version of Jean Grey anyway).
It's exactly how they are marketing it, and exactly how they priced it. Notice the front of the box says Jean Grey/Phoenix Force like it's a two pack. I mentioned this at one point but looks like I cut it for some reason.
@@RoboDontKnow I thought they already were, well, what do I know. edit: bighead toy store says December, but for me, thats not always the most trust worthy.
I much prefer the green on this Phoenix. The Mafex fits the initial look for the costume, but that just makes it not blend in as well with my other figures which are from a bunch of different eras. That and the faces on these are better than the Mafex's. Glad I cancelled, but I might wait on a sale for this. The bird effect is cool, though. Can already see it becoming a mainstay in toy photography.
It's the best Phoenix figure from Legends so far, but I'm not a fan of the straight hair for Jean as Phoenix. Classic phoenix had wavy hair with much more body to it. That's the classic look she had when she wore this costume, so it feels weird to have that costume with straight hair. Seems odd. Don't understand why Legends can't get that sort of detail right. Someone mail them a collection of the Claremont Byrne era Phoenix era! Stat! lol Flame bird effect is awesome.
