"Quantity over quality" killed the MCU. Disney got greedy and lazy and it shows. They should go back to two films per year; we can do without the television shows.

I think people are looking at the MCU with rose coloured glasses. Not all of the movies prior to end game was great but it all led up to it and then it peaked when infinity war and end game came out. Now everyone is looking for that same feeling instantaneously.

Everything fell apart for two reasons for me: 1) Too much content. The move to Disney + content was a mistake. While some shows have been good, they do very little to establish a cohesive narrative across the MCU and most of the shows are average and forgettable. You just consume marvel content for the sake of it but it is too much for the average viewer even for MCU die hard. Time to scale back. 2) No focus and conflicting narrative: Now can anyone tell me how Loki and multiple timelines reconciles to Dr Strange and multiverses and incursions. One show you have scared timelines and Kang. On the other you have multiple earths and incursions. Don’t tell me they are the same because they are not. When Loki took the taseract, he created another timeline. That is not the same as another earth and universe. Pruning timelines is not the same as incursions. It makes no sense at all about how these things tie. As well Kang has been a big disappointment. Antman I found to be a bad movie all around.

The MCU should’ve taken a 5 year break after Endgame. Too much saturation.
@sterlingarcher5698
@sterlingarcher5698 8 месяцев назад
Over saturation wouldnt be an issue if the writing was good. The plotting and character work in some of the films are bad. The tone and themes are bad (looking at you Love and Thunder) in some of the films and the connectivity.... Moon Knight came out just before Thor. Both were about Gods and pantheons...and there was no connection?! Same for MK mythology and Rama-Tut. Could've been some hint, weave it into narrative to plant the question with audience, develop it later on.... Instead we got a vague picture on the back of a jacket that was irrelevant. Easter eggs have become superficial nods, rather than narrative forshadowing. And I suppose that sums it up. The MCU is superficial now, shallow and empty. Bringing the OG Avengers bk reeks of desperation. Replacing Kang with Doom after all the world building, will turn off most fans. Why bother getting invested if theyre just gonna u turn?

I was intially so excited for shows coming mixed and tied into movies etc..but now, i wish they wouldve just stuck to 3 movies a year formula and find somehow to introduce all of these characters in giant 3 hour movies rather than making mediocre shows =/. i love the MCU, but if they getting slander its probably because the deserve it. but it DOESNT mean MCU cant be super great again! lets all have faith. My excitement and enthusiasm with Marvel would have remained the same if they could have done the following: 1. Made Hulk angry again. 2. Recasted T'Challa. 3. Scrapped She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, Secret Invasion & The Eternals 4. Focused all their efforts & attention on Moon Knight. 5. Made a Hawkeye show that's an action-drama thriller. 6. Not butchered Thor 4 with annoyingly over-the-top comedy. 7. Released an Avengers movie in phase 4.

To put things into perspective from the very beginning of the MCU in 2008 to the ending of the Infinity Saga in 2019 we had 22 MCU proper projects over the span of 11 years. Now between 2019 and 2023 just four years time, we’ve had 19 projects that’s not even including animated/specials or upcoming films like Marvels or Thunderbolts. That is absolutely insane that they’ve essentially pumped out more projects in 4 years than they did the first 11.

As a hardcore Marvel fan, I cant wait for the MCU to go away. It warps these characters into family friendly Disney versions and they lose their edge, wackiness and charm in the proces. Moon Knight and Captain Marvel are perfect recent examples. I dont want Hollywoods "modernized" version of these characters. I want the actual characters. Better to stick to the comics.

everything fell apart with Covid story changes. EVERY SINGLE project that was rumored to be heavily affected by COVID changed storylines, timelines, and even availability. Lets not even talk about how bad those shows and movies did. The programing (THANKS CHAPEK) on top of them already not being able to complete things, left us with so much of the broken shows and movies we've been dealing with. Now they are trying to change things mid stream while not paying for the talent (writers and directors etc) who can really make great quality films. They need to drastically reduce quantity for a few years and get everything in order. expand the teams before they want to try new ventures, focus on the stories being complete and make the movies LOOK GOOD (PAY THE FX PEOPLE). if they did they would be in a great place. They planned so much for the first 10 years... Now everything is in freefall and their isnt a focus on creating a quality product.

If he still would’ve been here with us, we may have gotten other projects sooner that made more sense when you look at the overall landscape. If they really want to fix this, put the focus on the mutants while they figure the multiverse saga out.

There used to be a continuity to the MCU, with everything leading up to Thanos and then Infinity War / Endgame. Now nothing really feels connected. Every movie has post-credit scenes with different characters leading them in different directions. I assume everything should be building up to Kang he has only been 'a thing' in one movie and two seasons of a show. What about Harry Styles as Thanos' brother? Should I care about what Charlize Theron wanted with Doctor Strange? Where has White Vision been for the past few years? Is Shang-Chi important? I really enjoyed that movie but nothing else in the MCU has mentioned those characters or events AFAIK. It's all so disjointed now. I used to be "all in" on the MCU but even movies like Guardians 3 and No Way Home, which should be key parts of a narrative through line, feel like disparate corners of a big mess of stuff.

The problem with big corporations owning franchises is that they try to milk every last possible dollar from it. Breaks are good. After Endgame they should have take a minimum 5 year break. Let everyone recharge the batteries and develop the next story/direction of the films. Plus the anticipated “Return of Marvel” to the theaters would have been insane. An event of the decade type of event. Now I think most people are burnt out on Marvel.

This isn't atypical of any other business, a company finds succeed, they try to get explosive growth and then suffer for it. What is most important is that they have the capital (not just financial) to figure out what went wrong and resolve the issues. Iger back in was the first good step and now it'll take time to fix the issue, but they are making all the right noises so far. One thing that is NOT needed is going back to Cap and Iron Man as the pillars that the MCU is built on. They are great characters but there is no need to keep rebooting and reusing them at the expense of other characters. I mean, people complain about no consequences, but then want to bring back characters that have died.

Brilliant and objective analysis John. I agree with all of what you described. Especially of Kevin Feige. My only criticism of Feige is choosing to stick to the multiverse as the overall narrative for the saga. I wish he would make Kang an intermediate level villain like Loki and Ultron, relegate multiverse to a side story that ends in a Doctor Strange movie or something. Tje multiverse isn't interesting. What was great about the Infinity War saga was the journey was exciting audiences and just the destination. The multiverse saga feels like it's more interested in getting to the end to make us excited by filling it with nostalgia bait, than it is the journey of taking us through the story that ends in Avengers
@jjeKKell

Aside from obvious failures like Secret Wars, Marvel's problem at the moment is one of oversaturation. The audience is getting burnt out on the notion someone being able to fling another person halfway across the city into a skyscraper just so they can get up and walk away. Meanwhile, without rebooting their best characters Marvel is forced to appeal to a wider and wider audience with lesser known and lesser interesting properties. I'm sure they'll continue to make good movies from time to time, but they really need to focus on quality over quantity if they're going to get people to pay to see these films in theaters, and not just wait to watch at home.

Kinda worried about the Multiverse saga with… There’s already the Jonathan Majors issue and the pressure to generate more content to the detriment of quality. It really comes down to just the fact that the MCU is making way too much content now, it used to be the MCU would only have 1 or 2 projects a year, which made them feel much more like events, it also allowed for Kevin Feige to put more time and care into them, but now we’re getting like 4 or 5 projects a year, which means that he’s only able to give like 30% to each project, which makes them feel a lot less polished, even though I’ve been a fan of some of them I think it was ultimately a mistake for Marvel to introduce the Disney+ shows, because like I said, it’s caused them to get way too trigger happy with how much stuff they’re putting out, they should’ve just stuck to movies, I hope that now that they’ve made the decision to cut back on the amount of stuff they’re putting out we can finally see them return to making really great stuff again but yeah, there’s no doubt that this is what ultimately caused them to drop in quality

I'm vehemently against Marvel/Disney reviving Iron Man and Black Widow. For three reasons: 1) This move would only show how desperate and dire Disney would be in trying to win the audience back with the MCU. It also shows how full remedial the higher ups would be by thinking: "By bringing Tony Stark/Iron Man and Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow back; people would love the MCU again because how beloved those characters are. Plus, we're Marvel baby! People love Marvel regardless of what we do." Yeah, not caring about the repercussions this move will do. 2) It'll make Stark's and Romanoff's sacrifices in Endgame less impactful and possibly lose all meaning. Phase 4 and onwards is meant have that lingering effect of what those two characters done in restoring the world. Plus, Stark's sacrifice in that final act gave him an eternal status that will be taken away if he's revived. The same goes to Romanoff to an extent. 3) Like it or not, Yelena Belova and Riri Williams are intended to be the successors of Iron Man and Black Widow respectably; with Riri as Iron Heart and Yelena as the next Black Widow. By bringing Stark and Romanoff back, it'll make Riri's and Yelena introductions of Phase 4 meaningless. What purpose do they have if they're not successors of Iron Man and the Black Widow? Marvel/Disney would introduce them in the MCU for nothing if that's the case.

Marvel came out strong with wandavision, was pretty good, tfatws was above average, depends on ur taste, Loki was obviously great, those 3 shows I had no problem with, I honestly thought marvel was just gonna continue there amazing track record and hit us with an incredible saga, then black widow came out, that was the first kind of punch in the face, I was iffy but marvel had done mediocre in the previous 3 phases so I wasn't even mad, I enjoyed what if, probably more than most people, Shang chi was fun, then eternals was another punch in the face, and a bad one at that, pushing agendas, and terrible writing were the main problems for me, Obviously we all loved Hawkeye and no way home, but that film needed to bring back tons of nostliagia. November-December 2021 was great for the mcu and marvel, I enjoyed mom more than most people, left the theater pretty disappointed, moon knight was just garbage, didn't like that at all, and then the Final Blow for me was Thor 4, that film was the lowest of lows, not funny and trash, didn't watch ms marvel, it looked pathetic, watched she hulk anddidnt like it, thought the first episode was good and the rest was mediocre, the I am root shorts didn't matter to me, werewolf by night was fine, felt disconnected, black panther wakanda forever was a major disappointment, I can't pretend just because Chadwick is gone I enjoyed it, cause I didn't, and namor was stupid. Ant man and the wasp wasn't even horrendous just so disappoint to the point I didn't care. And since January 2023 I haven't even seen a Great marvel project, ant man, secret invasion were both bad, and guardians 3 was good but nothing over the top, we are a few weeks out from the marvels which will flop, and echo and Agatha will as too.

I can't speak for others but five years ago I was at the midnight screening for every new MCU movie. Now - I havnt seen the last couple at all yet and have zero interest in The Marvels. And what it comes down to is that the characters simply aren't there. The old ones are gone and the new ones are just terrible and I don't care.

The MCU was cool in my late 20s and early 30s but I’m almost 40 and I’ve totally lost interest. I don’t run an entertainment/movie podcast so keeping up with interconnected plots don’t interest me as a 40 year old man. There is life to be lived. IDK I’m one of the former hardcore MCU fans pre pandemic that now post pandemic I just don’t care and don’t want to care. It’s times consuming

If Marvel is failing because Kevin Feige is spread too thin, then it’s an unsustainable model anyway. At some point it has to end anyway. If there is no one else in the leadership chain who can’t do what he does at that level, it’s on borrowed time.

The problems started when Bob Iger got rid of Ike Perlmutter. Perlmutter kept Feige in check. Having diversity of casting is fine as long as storytelling quality remains high. The problem with Hollywood and Disney in particular (Lucasfilm and Marvel Studios included) is that they are prioritising that over good storytelling and developing interesting . Hollywood needs to stop preaching to people and focus on entertaining them with good old fashioned escapism.

Was he holding Feige back or was he making sure Feige made stuff people wanted to see? I'm inclined to think think the latter. Perlmutter was there to make sure that Feige made commercially viable movies that could also sell lots of tie in merchndise which the current movies are not . Everything up to Infinity War was mapped out with out with help from the Ikes of Perlmutter. Perhaps he was holding Feige back with good reason. Kevin Feige has beome Kathleen Kennedy 2.0@@Deather312
