Marvel Reducing Their Movie Output Is Stupid! (Reacting To The Bob Iger Announcement)

Recently Bob Iger (the CEO of Disney) made a public statement saying (and I am paraphrasing here) that Marvel Studios would be reducing their output to about 2-3 movies a year with 3 movies being the maximum and just 2 shows a year on Disney Plus. Today I react to that news and give my reasoning as to why I think this is not a good move for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It’s not stupid. It makes sense. We don’t need seven movies and tv shows in one year. Let people wait and get excited for a marvel movie again like they are with Deadpool and Wolverine

I think 2-3 movies a year is a good amount. With 2 live action shows a year. I agreed with the reduced output of content with a slight stipulation if you watched the video. And on top of that Marvel Studios has never released more than 3 movies in a year, 4 if you want to count 2021 with Spider-Man: No Way Home, but although it’s MCU it’s more of a Sony production than a Disney production due to the nature of the rights and profit splits.

I believe the tv shows are the biggest problem hence why I agree with the reduction of 2 tv shows a year. They are releasing too many half baked shows that don’t even operate as a normal television show. For animation, I don’t really count it since it’s under a different label. Some of the animated shows don’t have any relation to the actually overall MCU so I understand if they end up releasing 3 animated shows a year. For example this year: X-Men 97, Eyes Of Wakanda, and, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. Next year will probably be: X-Men 97 season 2, What If Season 3, and Marvel Zombies. Makes sense to me.

If we consider only Disney / Marvel movies they have never actually released more than three films a year max. If we ignore everything pre-2008. The actual problems are those films produced fully or in co-productions by outside studios.

Yeah, Sony has been making a real mess lol. I think Marvel Studios themselves have been down in quality as of late, but I think there are ways to remedy it without just saying hey let’s just make less movies.

I find it a little disappointing as well for some similar reasons. My main thought is just that there are so many characters to follow. You mentioned Shang-Chi not being seen or heard of in 3 years. I suspect the amount of time we had to wait for The Marvels without Carol Danvers showing up in anything more than a post-credit scene didn't help the box office numbers. Additionally, this is all without the mutants really introduced into the main universe. I also agree that two movies and shows a year could either make it take forever to get to the end of the Multiverse Saga, or they will rush to the ending and it won't work as well as the Infinity Saga did. I am mostly fine with the films. I would say 3 films a year, with maybe an option of a 4th one at a lower budget (or maybe a co-production with Sony on a Spider-Man related film.) I actually would like 3 or 4 shows a year, with a mix between new titles and additional seasons of already launched titles. If they each have an average of 6 episodes, that is still only 18-24 episodes (which is the equivalent of one season of many tv shows still on American broadcast stations.) Or maybe they do three shows a year with a handful of one/two part special presentations to tell smaller stories. Whatever they choose, I will say that the ending of Infinity Wars worked because we had seen enough of those characters to be invested in them being dusted or not. At the moment, if something similar happened to Shang-Chi, Moon Knight, She-Hulk, etc. I would be more disappointed at wasted potential than super devastated that they died. I would rather they take a bit more time to bring characters back and to wrap up the many plot threads they have teased before ending the Multiverse Saga than rush it so that they can bring the Avengers brand back. I think then we get a soft reboot which brings the mutants, maybe Inhumans, and a few new versions of our original character together with the main universe characters that are continuing on and moving forward from there.

Yeah exactly, but technically it doesn’t even count as a Marvel Studios release even thought it’s an MCU property because it’s a Sony production

personally, i think it could go even lower. i’m talking 1 or 2 movies and 1 or 2 shows a year. i just don’t need that much mcu content
@MasonTheNerdReviews
@MasonTheNerdReviews Месяц назад
That’s fair. I like having the content though. I think 3 movies is the sweet spot with a minimum of 2 a year. If the MCU released just one movie a year the entire slate and saga would take forever to get through. Lots of heroes wouldn’t even get sequels until years later and I’m not a huge fan of that idea personally. I think for the shows it’s good having 2 shows a year, but they should be treated as shows and not jam packed messes that are only 6 episodes long. 8-12 episodes so there’s tv show content on Disney plus for 16-24 weeks out of the 52 weeks in a year. At the end of the it’s a business and they need content
@fakehappyfilms
@fakehappyfilms Месяц назад
@@MasonTheNerdReviews understandable. i think in the earlier days, 1 was perfect, but the mcu has gotten too big. praying for that reboot and that’s where the F4 and XMen become main players

I don’t even know if I’m going to see most of these. I’m a die hard Marvel fan but the MCU has really burned me out and I haven’t watched any of the shows since Moon Knight because it disappointed me so much. I’m going to watch Wonder Man because I love the character, Spider-Man 4, Your Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man and Fantastic Four. And obviously an X-Men movie whenever it comes out. Blade as well but that’s all.
@MasonTheNerdReviews
@MasonTheNerdReviews Месяц назад
That’s fair for sure! I don’t think the intention of Marvel is that you have to watch every single thing to understand things. Some people only enjoy certain characters. It’s just like the comics. Not everyone is going to read every current Marvel title. There’s content for everyone.
@TheWaywardWarrior12
@TheWaywardWarrior12 Месяц назад
@@MasonTheNerdReviews That’s true. It’s not necessarily a bad thing that I don’t want to watch every Marvel thing like I used to. I just think the quality needs to increase a bit. It’s more inconsistent than bad in my opinion.

Im not sure if you watched the entire video, but I agreed with the 2-3 movie output and 2 tv shows a year output with just a slight stipulation. The other point I’ve been trying to make is that this isn’t really “news” this has been the model for Marvel even when everyone has been going crazy over the amount of projects they have been dropping. It’s always been 2-3 movies a year and that never changed except for 2021 when Sony dropped No Way Home which yes is apart of the mcu, but is counted as a Sony release, not a Marvel Studios release. The amount of shows that have been dropping is what causes the influx in so much content dropping. I think limiting it to 2 live action shows a year is the way to go and I also think they need to be treated as shows. Not just half baked six episode movie/tv show hybrids that are either really bad or extremely mid. Spend more time on it and extend the episode count so it doesn’t feel so flushed. I said in another comment it would be better if they did 8-12 episodes per show. That way the stories can be fleshed out better and not rushed. Plus on top of that you get 16-24 weeks of content on Disney Plus compared to just 12 weeks if you released two mid 6 episode shows. Disney Plus can maintain subscribers better that way I think and more people will learn about the show as it goes on.
