Marvel's What If...? 1x8 REACTION!! "What If... Ultron Won?"

Imagine the next episode title being: "What If... The Watcher intervened?"

The whole “infinity stones only work in their own universes” thing is a comics thing that the MCU is apparently changing. In Loki that was a theory for why they didn’t work in the TVA but Loki’s actual wording more implied that there was something about the TVA itself that was directly stopping the stones from working. Presumably Kang didn’t want the stones to threaten him so he designed the TVA to negate their powers.

“Peace in our time”… that’s what Tony said when he created Ultron. Also, it’s pretty cool to see the Watcher throw down like this.

Eric is the only reactor I've seen catch that Captain Marvel wouldn't know about T2. That's why I love you guys.

I think this is what a live-action Age of Ultron that tries to emulate the spirit of the comic would definitely look like. I do understand why the MCU wouldn’t go this way because it is the “mainline” live-action universe so it’s difficult to make stories with drastic consequences like the AoU comic, outside of universe-shattering events like Infinity War and Endgame. That’s the beauty of What If stories because we get to eat our cake and have it again all at once.

Easily the best episode yet. Even tho Ultron’s original voice actor wasn’t voicing him in this and his armor didn’t look more like his AOU design I still love it. Ultron is my favorite Avengers villain and I love to see him again and even more powerful (Loki was good villain, Thanos was really awesome villain but Ultron was my favorite and I’am sad we didn’t get his full potencial in the movie).

The Galactus homage was absolutely amazing

It’s amazing how Marvel spent a decade building up Thanos as this massive threat & in a short span after Endgame we’ve gotten Scarlett Witch, Kang, Sorcerer Supreme & now Ultron as potentially way bigger threats in the MCU. Marvel’s like you all thought Thanos was a problem, nah, just wait we have bigger problems ahead… 😂 😂 😂

A team of Doctor Strange, The Watcher, and Wanda fighting this Ultron would be an insane fight to see.

He is no longer The Watcher, but now The “Watch Your Damn Mouth or You’ll Be Watching These Hands Beat Your Ass”er

This seems like a taste of the battle’s we’re about to get. A god faces a multiverse threat.

Best episode. Period. Even though this is only the penultimate episode. This is the culmination of where the Multiverse truly erupts. The barriers in-between paralleled splintered universes have been broken by the Watcher and Infinity Visions' battle. Causing time structures within those realities to alter and morph. And this is only a glimpse as to whats to come. No Way Home, Multiverse of Madness, Eternals and everything that'll follow can not get here soon enough....

Loki Season 2 HAS to clarify that the stones work in any universe, they only don't work in the TVA. So many people have the wrong idea about how the stones work just because the rules are different in the comics.

I think this Ultron Vision is the Ultimate OP. Imagine this character in the MCU... No more phase 4,5, etc. Best episode so far!

This was the best episode by far. Still shocked with how deep they dove into it. That cliffhanger might lead to something crazy.

What an amazing episode. This is why they wanted to do this show. Every big fight they do is so cool and creative, and people were worried for the type of animation

I like that Rick mentioned Kang a few times. Doctor Strange absorbing knowledge and information to the point he was aware of entities higher than his reality & realm and gain knowledge of manipulating time, and Infinity-Ultron updating to a powerful level of consciousness that it was able to become self-aware to the point that it understood that it existed in one universe of many... all have bits that reminded me of the intellect and genius of He Who Remains becoming who he is.

This has to be the best episode in What If!! It was dark, emotional etc. Most satisfying!!! 🙏🏽🙌💪

When you talk about ultron attaining another level of consciousness, i don’t think it was cause he got all the stones, but because he was by himself for sometime, complete silence with no white noise, at least that’s how i interpreted it

For anyone (equally) confused by the whole “Infinity Stones only work within their own universe”. In the comics it’s established that Infinity stones only work on their own universe, and different universes because they have their own sets. Now I’m not sure if Ultron in this episode is affecting alternate universes, or alternate timelines. All the episodes we’ve seen so far seem to be directly branched from the sacred Timeline, rather than completely different realities. Loki (the show) seems to imply that different universes have different TVAs that manage their own sacred timelines, which is why Mobius didn’t know about Alligator Loki, he was pruned by a different TVA (maybe, this is all guess work). So either the MCU infinity stones work completely differently to the Comic ones, or they work the same, the MCU has just been using timelines and universes interchangeably.

Ah yes, watching one of my favorite reaction groups watching one of my favorite Marvel villains. So satisfying.

I love how this episode proves Ultrons "kill humans to create peace" Creed was full of shit. Because we can all agree Humans have done some fucked up stuff to the wolrd and create war and shit. But the Watcher was just standing there watching, Ultron has no concept of what he is or if he's violent, yet he immediately attacks him.

My head canon on the stones working outside their origin universe is that Ultron didn't just travel the multiverse, he shattered the barrier and then shattered into the other ones; this allowed his origin universe to bleed into the others he shattered into and allowing the stones to work.

Did you know that the reason why Ultron found the watcher it's because of the reality stone, space stone, mind stone and soul stone. In Loki, it was explained that everyone has its own variants and in guardians of the Galaxy vol 2 we found 3 watcher, which could be that it's a watcher from another variety. Ultron founds the watcher because of reality stone, which has the ability to bend reality itself that you could see what reality is hiding, then use the space stone, which can use and expand universe itself from what ever it is showing, plus it was shown in Loki that all stones are useless but it could be that those stones are from another variety, and they still works even if they are at the TVA and the Watchers Window. This indicates that space stone is meant to see what the watcher is hiding. Then he used the soul and mind stone. While the watcher is explaining the set of Ep 7, Ultron became aware of his surroundings that he thinks that someone's presence is near him and that's where he saw the watcher. If your asking how Ultron found him and Thanos didn't Quickly it's because Ultron is a machine made out of vibranium, and not just that but he is inevitable, that's why he was able to take all the stones in full control without getting his body damaged it's because Vision's a machine with a computer brain and not a human

why do people not understand that multiverse ALWAYS EXISTED, it's not Loki series finale that created it. Kang explained, that he took one timeline and cut it off of the rest of the multiverse, taking over it and creating tva for THAT PARTICULAR SACRED TIMELINE. the multiverse still existed, but because of Kang "we" were cut off from it. *TVA doesn't control the multiverse, it controls only our universe, the Sacred Timeline* but, because of Sylvie's actions and Kang's death, now our universe is open to others. AND our timeline begins to branch and creates other timelines (=universes)

My issue with the whole premise of this episode is that Ultron was literally designed to wipe life from Earth then, then Thanos was going to obtain the Mind Stone from him. The fact that Ultron killed Thanos was the biggest departure from the established MCU, in my opinion. The end credtis scene, from Age of Ultron, showed this when Thanos said "Fine, I'll do it myself."

You are misunderstanding why the TVA can negate the Infinity Stones, and seriously misunderstanding the kind of power "He Who Remains" has over a part of his own realm.

*_Inconsistencies of the episode:_* 1. Thanos split in half even though he was able to withstand the attacks of Captain Marvel, Scarlet Witch, the Mjolnir the Stormbreaker. 2. What did Thanos sacrifice to obtain the Soul Stone? Gamora's cameo is seen as Ultron begins purging worlds. 3. Why aren't Asgard and Xandar destroyed if Thanos has the Power and Space Stones? 4. How can Ultron use the Gems in the Watcher space? Gems don't work outside the bounds of time as shown in the Loki series.

Stones don’t work in the TVA but can work in other universes. It works in the watchers corridor because it’s not the TVA.

In the comics the stones don't work outside their universe but they've never explicitly established that in the MCU. They established they don't work in the TVA because it's outside of all space time

I think its pretty defined that The Watcher is in a dimension outside time/space so he can see all those universes in some kind of hypercube similar to Insterstelar stuff. Where the stones start and stop working in that... sounds like a gray area.

The entire episode I kept thinking about the line Ultron said to Thor in the movie "I think you're confusing 'peace' with 'quiet'". Ultron saying he wants to truly do what Tony said by bringing peace in our time but he's killing everything. And he won, and it was quiet... seems like he did exactly what he said Thor was doing

You saying about the stones not working in other universes but wasn’t that when the TVA had control and the multiverse followed one timeline, now the multiverse has split as Ultron said anything is possible which also leads to a plan for any inter dimensional avengers team as to could go from universe to universe collecting infinite infinity stones

Minor detail but...sound effects were awesome this episode!

Basically, my understanding is thus: - Stones don't work in the TVA because they are magic; magic itself doesn't work in the TVA. - Stones work anywhere where magic works, regardless of universe, multiverse, etc. This differs from the comics. Opposite this: they would fail anywhere magic fails.

I was really hoping he was going to say "It's time to intervene" or "I must intervene" at the end

Unpopular opinion: I liked Ultron better when he had a personality.

Remember, the Watcher isn't seeing events in chronological order. He's just peering into different realities. So the events of Ultron showing up after Party Thor may have happened before this did... but then viewing the events of this reality pulled the Watcher into the present.

I have a theory of why the infinity stones worked in different universes. Think of the Watcher's domain being the place where the multiverse all intersects or merges into one so by using it as doorway it connects the universes rather than separating them making the stones work in all as it will still be connected to their own universe and have access to all others as the Watcher's domain connects to all simultaneously. Remember this is just a theory that might not be true but at least it would explain why they were working.

34:20 rick reminded me that the What If opening sequence begins with Black Panther Tony stark Thor and at the very end is Captain America, but only then does the glass shatter. The watcher narrates something about their being infinite possibilities as Captain America’s image shatters into a million pieces. My money is Steve Rogers broke the timeline by going back in time and spending his life with Peggy Carter

It's interesting, Ultron could have snapped everyone out of existence but he wanted to enjoy committing genocide one civilization after the other.

I think they (marvel) stated that the workings of the stones is not up to par with canon in this series. Loki showed that they don't work outside your own universe, but here it still works. I think they have mentioned a bit or artistic freedom here.

In the comics Uatu lives on the moon, but here he was in some kind of pocket dimension.

Go back and watch it. The lava planet that they traveled through was Mustafar from Star Wars . You can even see Vader’s castle in the background

From what I see, the Multiverse Avengers will consist of doctor simp, Captain Carter, T'Challa Star-Lord, Thanos armour gamora, killmonger, party thor, and this black widow. Nobody confirmed from the zombies or dead avengers universe, but I'm guessing it will involve spider man supreme.

He was always on the moon hanging out sometimes with some of the heroes...Just chilling and peeping.. he always had that moon base. Maybe this is before he decides to focus on one universe. In the marvel comic books you can only use the infinity stones inside of their own universe. In the MCU they haven’t established that. The only thing was that they didn’t work inside of the TVA (which I think the TVA is inside of the quantum realm and that’s why they don’t work) Loki started questioning the power of the TVA because he found out that the stones were useless there.

I would argue that Vision wouldn't have been able to generate enough power to bisect Thanos because he wasn't at full strength after having been injured by Corvus Glaive's weapon. As for how Thanos acquired the Soul Stone, he probably sent Corvus Glaive and Proxima Midnight after it, ordering one of them to sacrifice the other in order to retrieve it since they are married.

I think the Infinity Stones do work within the TVA, however the workers there are programmed not to give them much thought. Like Loki was trying to get to the Tesseract and probably could have used it, but he decided to stay with the TVA because they appeared to be more powerful/influential than the stones. Also I think it's safe to say the MCU stones do not follow the same rules as the comic stones--like how Thanos always had to close his fist or snap to use them (at great consequence to his being when used together), while in comics Thanos could use them willy nilly with no consequence to himself.

Definitely the craziest episode so far, can't wait to see where they go with this.

This was a great episode. I wouldn’t put too much thought into how Thanos got the stones. That was clearly a convenient and quick way to explain how Ultron got all the stones so they could rush to Ultron becoming a cosmic god to threaten the multiverse. Realistically Thanos having all the stones at this point in time doesn’t make as much sense.

i’m still trying to piece together the connection and flow of last episode’s ending to this episode. In Thor’s episode, the Watcher was shocked to see Ultron here in this “Happily Ever After” universe, which means Ultron traveled through the multiverse. However in this episode, Ultron gained knowledge of the multiverse when he saw and heard the Watcher, thus both engaged in an epic fight. See the problem here, the Watcher is supposed to already know of Ultron’s existence in Thor’s episode since Ultron already travelled the multiverse. Marvel made a mistake? Still a 11/10 episode for me, amazing

My brother and myself were thinking about the stones working in their own universe as well along with if Vision could kill Thanos, but personally I just enjoyed the episode instead of if it is possible because this episode was very enjoyable, loved when the watcher was like "Oh shit he seeing me - next channel"
