Marvel Two-in-One: Ghost Rider Meets Baby Jesus - Comic Tropes (Episode 30)

Last week's episode focused on a really bad Christmas comic so this week I take a look at a good one. Well, a fun one. It's still pretty crazy. Marvel Two-in-One #8 features The Thing and Ghost Rider teaming up to protect a new Jesus Christ. That's right, a Jewish and Satanic superhero protecting the birth of Jesus... who is also Native American.

There's a trope you missed, when ever we cut to the F4 in a comic they're always in Reed's lab, and usually Ben is lifting things for him.

Another trope you missed was that this was the era in which Marvel couldn't decide whether Johnny Blaze was stuck as the Ghost Rider permanently or whether he could morph back and forth at will between Blaze's body or Zarathos. After being separated by Christ from the Zarathos spirit, it was implied that Johnny could "tap into" the spirit when needed, but that would be refuted the very next issue and then get refuted again the following month. On top of that, whenever you saw Ghost Rider in the Champions title, it appeared that Johnny Blaze was in control of the spirit and could summon him at will, and this was _before_ he was set free in the main Ghost Rider title, so it was pretty hard to follow. This particular issue seems to have been written with the intention of Johnny being human at least during certain parts (which would explain why the Thing doubted that Johnny would be hurt by the fire) but at the last minute somebody said "nope, he's got to be Zarathos for the entire issue." Seems like there was a lot of loco weed being passed around the bullpen at that time.

biggs949597 dude if he’s not christian it’s not a big deal, also christmas was originally a pagan holiday not even tied to christianity, it was later formed into that because of market appeal. the modern “religious” elements of christmas aren’t really that valid it’s more of a general consumer holiday especially in the western world, even more so when you take into account historians pinpoint jesus’ real birth at sometime in the spring

To be fair the counter culture of the late 60s, early 70s kinda took the idea of Jesus as like the original hippie and ran with it. So it popped up in popular culture with stuff like Spirit in the Sky, Jesus Christ Superstar, etc.

The Thing recognizing Johny Blaze in Ghost Rider form was easy. Johny Blaze used to wear a flaming skull mask while doing stunts. I think this was to confuse his identify if he suddenly changed in the middle of his act.

HahA! This one was a blast. I collected a few issues of Marvel 2-in-1 as a kid but always preferred Marvel Team- Up. Yeah, that money shot of the Thing and Ghost Rider in the robes was hilarious. I'm not sure if something like that could ever fly nowadays, but back then, they were always writing whacky stuff like that. Looking forward to your next vid. Thanks for posting!

I recently collected all the Gerber Marvel Two-in-Ones, and a small chunk past. Ben Grimm is a favorite character and Gerber is a favorite writer.

The thing was marvels best character in the 70s. Maybe tied with Captain Marvel. Also that Man-Thing story Gerber did about the Nexus of Realities in Fear/man-thing was off the chart

"That seems like something an editor should have caught" is a common complaint I've always had with Marvel. Editorial can't actually edit books, but they'll sure force JMS to make Peter Parker make a deal with Mephisto. Almost like the editors have crappy priorities.

The gifts are not for the baby but the parents, gold to pay for the costs of raising a baby, frankensence to make oils to make the baby smell better after crapping everywhere and wiping the bum, and myrrh to make the wine taste better for when the baby finally sleeps

On the gifts that the Three Magii gave to Jesus, they're supposed to be symbolical, not really something the baby would use. The medieval "Golden Legend" explains this by showing that the gold is a gift fit for a king, the incense one for a god, and the myrrh one for a human. Also, regarding the date of Jesus' birth, I think it was around March. If it was winter, of course the shepherds wouldn't be around with their flocks in the streets...

I know this video is from 2016, but I have to mention that Marvel had established that Ghost rider doesn't breathe in an old Champions comic book. I don't know if this issue came out before that though. So I wonder why he would think he drove through "loco weed". It wouldn't affect him if he doesn't breathe.

I just read this issue two days ago in the new MTIO Epic Collection and I stumbled across this video today. Like the birth of Jesus, it was fated. The Thing is my favorite superhero, in part because he is Jewish.

In all the marvel universe ben grimm has the most kindness heart of all marvel heroes ❤️ . He truly is a decent person with a kind heart even to marvel villains...not sarcastic or snobby or a smart-ass. A good kind and moral person to all. I think he rival superman as far as morals go.

Not to be a stickler, but if you follow the early Ghost Rider comics, he was in a travelling carnival and travelled the country as the Ghost Rider. But he didn't make too much of a secret about it after the first year or so. If the Thing kept track of bike racing and trick riders, which he apparently did, he would probably be aware that "Ghost Rider" was Johnny's stage name. Since Johnny played it off like it was a gimmick rather than being demonically possessed.

"Ghost Rider" was never Johnny Blaze's stage name. The press gave the flaming skull face character that name in headlines after he ripped through Vegas.

I have loved The Thing since my very first read of an FF comic, so I never missed and issue of Two-In-One. That said I always preferred Marvel Team-Up.

I think there must have been a miscommunication between writer and artist in this... and Ghost Rider was probably in his human form when he met up with Grimm... makes sense, especially later when Ghost Rider told him he wouldn't get burnt in the fire.

Steve strikes me as an Existential thinker, not an especially religious fellow. Aquarian is an identity assumed after Gerber no longer writes Wundarr. By then, he was story editor for Thundarr, the Barbarian! 3rd time playing this one. Your Thing impression...rocks.

Marvel never had a character named Marvelman. They claimed that the name would be confused with Marvel comics. They relied on the fact that the company that printed Marvelman was small and couldn't afford to fight them legally. That's the reason that Alan Moore would no longer work for Marvel and for a long time they were unable to reprint the Captain Britain stories that he wrote.

Even now, in recent Miracleman reprints by Marvel Comics, Alan Moore is credited as "The original writer", as he doesn't want his name to appear in anything published by Marvel.

I'm a Catholic, but I used to have duty on Christmas all the time when I was in the Army. Not having a family, it made sense (and certainly kept the spirit of the Holiday).

It sounds like the artist drew Johnny Blaze as Ghost Rider but wasn't supposed to. When he says "I can't tell you why I won't get burned" that sounds like he's trying to cover up his powers.

Jesus did actually have foster parents. Frankincense and Myrrh are rare and valuable. Gold always has value. Also Ghost Rider still thinks like Johnny Blaze. His interpretations on things are not obligated to be particularly logical or well informed. He has not even necessarily encountered any of those who can manage that big a whirlwind. Near as I can tell, he didn't meet the X-Men until 1992, and how publicly known the X-Men were, particularly back in 74, tends to depend for most of their history on whether they are in an ad for something or not. Not sure about Thing recognizing Johnny Blaze but Johnny may well have had a similar costume and/or cycle for his pre-Ghost Rider act. With a name like Johnny Blaze.... If you have a problem with the story of the Star of Bethlehem, you need to take that up with publishers other than Marvel....

Frankincense and myrrh are two gifts a baby would have absolutely no interest in.....but babies sure do know how to use that gold. Robin Hood: Men In Tights also had a similar line to those who ride camels, so clearly it was still many years away from people realizing they should avoid that.

Actually, a star could be "directly above". The issue is that the planet rotates, so in order for a star to be directly above a city for more than an instant, the star would have to be circling the Earth, or the Earth would have to not rotate. This is the least of the issues with the Bible as a narrative, but forgivable because people just didn't know how to write a good story back then.

Ghost Rider's dialogue was SUPPOSED to be insensitive. Apart from Supeman, Gerber didn't like writing morally pure super hero. T Whereas his best known works... Howard the Duck, Stewart the Rat, Man-Thing, Johnny Blaze during his run on Ghost Rider etc. are all flawed anti-heroes. They are flawed and occasionally crude people. Furthermore, Gerber was... by most account.... a Humanistic (Agnostic with Atheistic leaning) Jewish. He wasn't putting in Jesus because he believed in it. Wundarr and this story were meant to be ridicule and criticize the idea of Christianity, not embrace it.

Guy rides a horse- literally the definition of “jockey”, everyone’s cool. My phone even has an emoji ready to go if i type jockey. Guy calls dudes riding camels “camel jockeys” people trip over themselves trying to show how “progressive” they are and completely miss the obvious. You JUST said the writer was pretty religious. Why would he be racist to the characters that gifted jesus? It was a corny tongue in cheek way to drive home that this is a marvel/bible christmas crossover. Like oh he has no idea who thos guys were, how silly. Jesus people. Loosen up just a smidge🤣

There really weren't reenactors at that time (and "cosplay" really wasn't a word than). Also, I'm not sure there is any kind of religious pageant or presentation out there (by the Catholics or the Episcopalians or the Orthodox Christians or the .LDS)..
