Marvin Gaye was part of early Motown in the 1960's. He had a lot of great songs such as "Ain't That Peculiar", "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)", "I Heard It Through The Grapevine", "Let's Get It On", "Mercy, Mercy Me" etc. Gaye also recorded quite a few duets with Mary Wells ("Once Upon A Time" & 'What's The Matter With You Baby"), Kim Weston ("It Takes Two"), Tammi Terrell ("Ain't No Mountain High Enough", "Your Precious Love", "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing" & "You're All I Need To Get By").

Marvin was a genius. He had to go against Berry Gordy who didn’t want him to record this. He thought it was too controversial. Luckily Marvin won out and did it the way he wanted. He has the unbelievable Funk Brothers as his musicians in this, including the GREAT James Jameson on bass. This recording is monumental and the lyrics are relevant even today, 50+ years later. Thank you so much for reacting to this. It has often been mentioned as one of the greatest songs ever. 👏👏👍❤️

Music should make you feel. Just human interaction joy, pain, confusion, confidence, sorrow, seduction whatever it’s a medium for human interaction . This is gorgeous but the album version is a masterpiece. The disconnection people feel these days doesn’t surprise me at all. We don’t have as many options to experience music, as we used to have. Our young should be able to gather around music and safely commune together with dance and song. ☮️

that's why I'm so glad I grew up in the 70's I think it was the best decade of music....I loved Marvin growing up and listening to him on the radio. My dad was not always happy about it, but it was a different time back then. I always am kind of sad listening back to some of the music I thought for sure would bring about social justice...I was so hopeful, but we haven't come as far as we should of and could of. I often wonder if the tragic deaths of so many musicians discourage people instead of inspiring them.

You want to hear the most phenomenal, soulful version of the National Anthem, check out Marvin's version of the National Anthem at the 1983 NBA All-Star game. Marvin was smoother than whip cream with his shades and suit. You didn't know whether to put your hand over your heart or grab your partner for a slow dance.

I was privileged enough to see Marvin Gaye in the UK in 1976 and 1983 and he was simply a different class to anyone else. My absolute all time favourite and have " God is Love from the What's Going On Album booked in as my funeral tune. Have you ever heard Billy Paul " I want cha baby " the Sax is off the scale! Loving you love for Angelina Jordan , Ren and now Marvin!!!

Loving the Marvin reactions. He's so powerful. From roughly the same era, Isaac Hayes Walk on By, long version, is one you should try. It doesn't have the political and cultural statements, but the vibe and groove are so good.

I grew up in the streets of north St. Louis mo. On listening to Motown. It was Marvin and others music that caused me to see the world as I do. Back in the day. Alittle bud and some good music like this. Man o man. That was the shit. I’m much older now. No bud these days. But I’m still paying attention and jamming to this. Still we want to know what is going on. Thanks Marvin for your insight that you allowed us to see the vision you had. Rip my brother. You are still having a very big impact. On what we see in our world.
