I was visiting my cousin in East Los Angeles it was the summer of 1971. I was 16 at the time when I went to this record store. I came across this album What’s Going On by Marvin Gaye. Okay Marvin Gaye in a black leather trench coat. The background was fall scene. All I know is I had to buy it. I didn’t get to play it till I got back to Oklahoma. When I heard it Marvin just took me to new heights and the lyrical content had the message about the world .. THE whole album went from one song into the other. All I can say is Marvin created something that’s timeless. We will never hear something like that again. His music is touched by all races. Yes I cherished that album went out and bought the eight track. Later I learned the greatest bass player of all times James Jameson played that beautiful bass line lying on his back. They say he been out that night drinking and was too intoxicated to sat on his signature high stool. So he played it lying on his back? Marvin had to have him. All I can say one of the greatest songs ever. Fifty two years later and I’m still enjoy this song and all his songs from Ain’t that peculiar, Duet with the Great Tammi Terrell, and let’s not forget Let’s get it on and Sexual Healing. One of the greatest of all times. LB October 2022
I think everytime he open his mouth he has a Grammy he didn't win enough boy just think if he was still with us he would have more Grammys but he wasn't trying to get Grammys he changed he world we miss you Marvin
at 2:36 the Bass Player is the LATE GREAT James Jamerson. Motown in house Bassist. he, and the FUNK BROTHERS played on MORE HITS than any other studio musicians in the history of R&B, Pop Music. Marvin Gaye is my boy, EL DEBARGE boy. 3 Motown Legends, Marvin, El, and James.
the CRAZY part watching this. in the midst of all the violence, poverty, and SUPER ignorance in the Afrikan world community, not just in Amerikkka, but globally. there you find the black churches. and other religious institutions/faiths/Mosques...WE AS A PEOPLE NEED TO GO BACK TO MA'AT.

This song just says it all, so much poverty and he sings it just like it is, still the same. We as brothers and sisters need to come together as ONE we are created by GOD. Treat each other no matter what color your skin is with love and respect. Marvin says it all in this beautiful masterpiece. What's going on? Just love his music, he loved the world and people. If only we could learn from his music and put forth what he is singing what a better world this would be. RIP Marvin. A true legend. Amen.

I was 11 when this came out, as a musician I was inspired by Marvin's words, this song is a positive message of lifting the shade on brutality of human nature.
I too was 11 when Marvin recorded this, although I was 19 before I ever heard it. Marvin Gaye's words live in my soul. I don't think any other man's voice has brought such joy to my soul as his.

To me he was the finest singer to be involved with Motown. A giant talent! I'm sure he told The Funk Brother's just enough what he wanted. He let the cat's do their thing and he did his and Majic happened!
