SO JEALOUS!!!!! I had always wanted this playset!!!! I watched Zorro and the Mickey Mouse Club religiously!!! We had the Flintstones and Jellystone Park playsets, and I think the barnyard playset, but always wanted this one and the Fort Apache sets.
Got the Zorro set for Christmas, 1958. I was 6, and a huge Zorro fan. My set did not have the lavender, tall hat lancers. Loved the set and played with it a lot. I still have the comandante, a few lancers, a few horses, and Zorro's horse.
Great Video! About 1980 went to a yard sale where a guy was selling his Zorro playset-- that had NEVER been put together or played with. I would have bought it as it was one of my favorites but I could not afford at that time in my life to spend the $200.00 he wanted for it. You always will remember the ones you let slip away.
That is a great set! Zorro was my favorite show back in the day. I remember checking this out hanging on the wall in Sears among all the other Marx playsets. I was lucky enough to receive the Blue and Gray one Christmas. Now as an old geezer, I'd still love to have a Zorro set, but wonder how would you play with it as an 8 year old. The other playsets with opposing armies you would just set up and have them shoot at each other. But the Zorro TV show (first season) basically had Zorro foiling the Commandante's plans to give the padrones and peons a hard time. Don Diego would chat with Sgt Garcia in the cantina, find out the Commandantes latest plans to catch Zorro, and then the lancers would chase Zorro back and forth in the compound and then out to Iversons Movie Ranch. Don't get me wrong, I ate this up as a kid. But how does that translate to playing with this set?
You already explained it. I was very excited to get it, but pretty much my Zorro ran around, knocking soldiers off their horses, and escaping. It quickly became repetitious. They should have had two Zorro figures; one on the horse, and one sword fighting on foot.
Zorro's a bit before my time but I enjoy these playsets. We sure had some great toys as kids. I don't envy the kids today. EDITED to add: I see many carryover Mexican soldiers from the Alamo playset.
