I saw you at a Cory Wong show in Boston in January 2019! Happened to recognize you from RU-vid but didn't really think of it till after the show! Small 🌍 keep jammin
couldn't agree more... on the other hand, this very interview also highlighted the great importance of Jack in it... and how much his drive supercharged vulfpeck even more so :)
I bumped into Cory at MSP airport - believe it or not, while listening to Vulfpeck. As a hobbyist musician and a 'strat guy', I'm a big fan of his tone. He had the famous blue strat along with him and was headed out to LAX to do some recording work. He's such a down to earth nice person - super cool to say hello and chat for a quick minute.

Wait, this dude releases about 3 albums a year, plays so many shows, practices his instruments for 3 hours daily AND HAS KIDS???? I've seen productivity gurus before but Cory is on another level.
Cory take note, this comment comes from the actual Jamiroquai guitarist! Mary, can we maybe set up a Patreon to buy Rob Harris some skis or a motorcycle or someting?
@@RobHarrisGuitar That might only break your arm if it is an Ampeg fridge 😉 Rob, seriously, how about a Jamiroquai/Vulfpeck collab? I would love to see that! 👍
What Cory describes (being in your 20's and wondering "What am i going to do with my live?") is exactly the situation i'm in right now. glad to hear more people have experienced this and are doing fine now. it gives a little bit more hope, as my self-esteem and mental overall is slowly breaking.
Jack Streton is the smartest guy on this "new" show bussines . In addition, he is an impressive musician and a visionary creator. He's Frank Zappa of the 21st century
What a great interview, thanks Mary. I'd heard of Cory but never really listened to his stuff. This interview got me interested in checking out the Vulpeck Madison Sq Garden concert video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rv4wf7bzfFE.html I'm normally more of a hard rock guy than the funky stuff Vulpeck does but I have to say that it's, hands down, one of the best concert films I've ever seen. The band is just having so, so much fun and it really comes out in the playing. All of the (many) guest performers just kill it. The camera work is stellar, it almost feels like you are a part of the band. I highly recommend this to those who haven't seen it, just a super fun show: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rv4wf7bzfFE.html
Went for a few pints with Cory and his band in Dublin a few years back after their gig in the Lower Deck. The guys were genuinely surprised that Irish folks were so into them and Vulfpeck. Sound lads , real nice guys and great conversations.
I'm late to this party, but when Cory was describing Vulfpeck as "cartoon characters" with their distinct personalities and personas (around 15:50) ... it struck me that as the Monkees were to the 1960s, so Vulfpeck is to the 2010s+. At least, there are _some_ parallels! IMO. YMMV.
I discovered Vulfpeck yesterday and instantly fell in love (as a bassist), all of them are so incredibly talented. The timing of this is perfect, thanks Mary
Great interview. Loved the question about the lead up to the Garden gig, and hearing about how much that meant to all the band members and their families. I could also relate to the task driven, as opposed to keeping a schedule mode of working. But most of all I love the passion Cory has for his endeavors... I think, from watching your content, this something you share in common..
But like seriously, this is inspiring. Thank you, Mary, for doing this, and thanks to Cory for telling his experience. Big fan, you guys are such an example 💛
Excellent interview Mary. You really got Cory talking without loads of input from yourself (that's in a good way😄) or him selling or promoing something. Don't know much about Cory but seems like a nice guy, I'm off to do some investigation (after today's practice). Keep up the great work.
The down-to-earth, playful and at the same time street-wise attitude of Cory is really a joy to see/hear. He really is a musician to my heart! Lovely interview, I like how Mary let's Cory just tell his stories!
Above all the talent, Jack Statton is funny AF. Jewish humor rules! =D That is what is what drew me in, let alone a shared love of Funk and Soul. Those guys are getting it done!
Cory's interactions with Joe on stage in the "Vulfpeck Live At Madison Square Garden" concert were priceless. During the song "Your Daddy's Got A Tesla" Joe is really tearin Cory up with some of his bass lines and driving him to play even harder. What a great Concert and Performance by all. Especially Jack's Mother!
WoW!!! I Love Following the "Breadcrumb Trail" of Artist Interactions to Discover New Artists and New Music!!! First it was Chris Botti...which lead to Dave Koz...which then lead to Cory Wong...and then lead to @Mary Spender !!! 😁👍🏻
The PRS SILVER SKY. Still worth it a YEAR later? Mark Cintula 6 months ago Mary Spender - "Back on Land" Cory Wong - "Friends at Sea" can there be a colab PLEASE!!! Your Welcome!
Funny, I went into Biology as a backup to music. Now I teach Biology and Computer Science but I still play music. Wonder if he needs a drummer? 🙂 Saw Vulfpeck in Dublin, Ireland - amazing! We Iove them here. 🎶 Great interview, just lets him talk. 🙂
So good to hear these two amazingly creative souls... such an amazing story told by Cory. Love the FidgetSpinner story, I remember that analogy in the interview with The Captain from Anderton's. Great interview, Mary!
Well, i never played such a enourmous show, but what I catched in Coreys story, and what i remember after the show... There is always before and after, but the actual show is just beyond that. Just the feelings, just the joy, just the escitement... And this os worth it!
Wouldn't that be patron of the day? I know that's what the people at Patreon calls them. You're the artist, they are your patrons, and Patreon brings you together. Jack Conte talks about it a lot, how the idea was to find support for artists in the same way that in the Renaissance artists had patrons (royalty and bishops and stuff).
For some reason Mary's body language seems like she's annoyed with Cory or in a defensive stance. The words she says don't match that at all though. Is it just me?
Yeah, I kinda get that vibe too from Mary. But it could just be her trying to really get into what Cory is saying. Sometimes my body language doesn't match my words... I dunno... just a theory...
I started as a bass player. Bass players turned guitarists are the best guitarists. And I became one due to the same reasons. Flea, Les... Gotta add Watt.
Hey it would be nice if you made a video on writing lyrics. Also your approach on writing in general (like do you wait for inspiration or do you write everyday). Thanks!
Terrific interview! Thanks for sharing with us! I know I would've loved to be at MSG for Vulfpeck, but I saw them at Tipitina's in New Orleans nearly a year before... It was incredible. I was about 12 feet away from the stage. Unforgettable experience.
ohhhh boy, I reckon he hates having Joe dart as a bassist, he's crap ;) This was awesome tho Mary, I was also surprised to hear all the stuff he grew up with, kinda similar to me, but I still play bass, and I'm not a successful musician, RIP.
Yes he is right, the bass player one that put togheter and glue the others instruments, and at the same tiene usually are underreted sometimes. Ahora en español para que Mary practique el idioma, tiene razón, el bajista es la persona que armoniza todos los instrumentos y usualmente son menospreciados.
Question for you Mary! Is this new schedule so impacting your time that you are behind on laundry and have run out of clean black shirts and you have had to wear other coloured shirts?
