My guy friends tease me all the time about watching reruns of Mary Tyler Moore. They can't understand how I could relate to a sitcom about a single woman dating back to early 70's. It was much more than that. The show is like spending 1/2 hour with your closest friends or favorite coworkers. Also, Mary's life was relatable, whether it came to everyday struggles, her love life, triumphs and disappointments. And the dialogue was so brilliant---sharp, witty, and a cast full of characters like a close friend. In the end, it was the humanity behind each character that makes the show relatable and memorable.
I feel that way about the Bob Newhart show. My husband doesn't like the show because he doesn't see a lot of action. I explained to him that it appeals to people who like to read - for people who appreciate witty, dry, or very subtle humor. A play on words, turn of phrase, double entendre, etc. Most of all, though, those shows were little plays about the different ways people could create meaningful friendships and even families without going the traditional route. They were especially heart-warming and inspirational for people who didn't have family (which was the case for me) or people who didn't want to get married and have children.
As a young PR person working in downtown Minneapolis we had the thrill of seeing MTM and her husband at least once. They were filming a show open in the third floor restaurant above the Crystal Court of the IDS Center. That's just across Nicollet Mall and 7th outside the iconic Dayton's store where she tosses her hat in the air. A statue memorializes that moment. RIP dear lady and thanks for all you meant to us!
I've adored the Mary Tyler Moore Show since I was a kid. I have to say, this "tribute" seemed half-cocked, sadly scripted and totally phony. Why bother if it seems like they're all full of crap? Stumbling over each other, talking over the clips, very weird. RIP Mary, you were a gem and thank you for all the laughs!
there were 168 episodes and they keep picking the same 3-5 episodes as "favorites". I am sure some producer told them what to pick. the first, chuckles, the last. Maybe the green dress made by the hooker episode and the "put on a happy face" episode where Mary has bad luck all week leading up to the Teddy awards. So I agree. Half hearted, stilted and scripted "tribute"
I will always remember you Mary Tyler Moore. Also the day I walked near you on Park Avenue New York in 2009 and you smiled to me...that was magic. ..thank you for everything. Rest in Peace
As a foreign student from Brazil at the University of Delaware I chose her show and Lucille Ball's to do my final work on American Culture to compare women in TV series from the 60's and 70's. I got 9.8. Thanks, Mary. Thanks, Lucille. RIP.
Here's a little Trivia, the first year of her series, the words to her theme song were, How will you make it on your own, this world is awfully big, girl this time your all alone, but it's time you started living, time to let someone else do some giving, love is all around etc, next year it was, Who can turn the world on with her smile, who can take a nothing day, and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile, well it's you girl and you should know it, with each glance and every little movement you show it, love is all around, etc
@@mathhousegiant2055 How about because he wasn't alive when the show was on and he's a former football player whose first choice of binge watching probably isn't old 70s sitcoms about women.
@@juskym Funny you say this because I'm probably younger than strahan and I watched her first on The Dick Van Dike Show and then the Marry Tyler Moore show in exactly that order on Nick At Night in the late 80s to the 90s. She was soooo hot i must admit i had a crush. Those capri pants on the Dick Van Dike Show... No words.(and I'm also black)
@@leelohaskin7941 For one, he grew up in Germany in the 70s. And I doubt he binged watched the Mary Tyler Moore show later in his life. The only time he watch any of the show was to prepare for his morning show. Allegedly.....
I’m so glad she got all the tributes via marathons playing reruns of her show shows like this doing tributes I’m just glad she got the recognition she deserves after a life well lived in making such an imprint on the world From wearing a pair of pants on the Dick Van Dyke show to plane a woman living on her own and not need a man to function and showing girls that they can live on their own and live a happy life Mary you made it after all thanks for showing us that we can too 😊📺🎬❤️
When they threw their hats in the air I got all choked up. I think that was the best sitcom that has ever hit the air. Others have come close, but their not quite on that level
The best scene of the Green Dress episode is when Lou knocks on the door. Mary gets a sly smile on her face, opens the door and says breathlessly to Lou "Well, hello big boy!"
I am only finding out Mary passed now. She (in the MTM show) inspired me to be optimistic about my future as a early teen when here (in Ireland) during the 70's things were looking very bleak economically. When I eventually did make it after all I would sometimes think back to that insecure kid sitting at home watching the show and give her a silent thank you. Loved her Mustangs too.
Standing the test of time, that's how you can tell whether a show has influenced generations to come. MTM has the rare combination of great writing and acting and wonderful chemistry between the actors. You really do feel these people are like family, that's its lasting appeal.
My only direct connection with anything related to this show was working with Ed Asner. We were all coming in to the same airport and picking up our baggage, and Ed, who did not know me from a hill of beans at that point, insisted on carrying one of my (very heavy) suit cases. I was very moved by that simple gesture of help. Which was totally unnecessary: I am a much much younger man (who has worked out for years), yet...he just wanted to help and show he was part of "the team". A very sweet person indeed. (I only crossed paths with Betty White. She was also in the same film.)
So.... I love "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and all, but I absolutely adore Mary's character on "The Dick van Dyke Show"! Laura Petrie is seriously my favorite ever! But, I guess she didn't make enough strides as a housewife or whatever...
Me too. Loved Laura Petrie!! To me, she was the perfect wife for some lucky slob to come home to each day. Lovely, adorable, funny, sympathetic, you name it, she had it.
Who else can boast so many people going off on their own shows:Lou,Grant,Phyllis,Rhoada,Love Boat,The Golden Girls,The Ted Knight Show (and he was on the end of Psycho before that). The only one that didn't go on to another show was Georgette. That is such a testimonial to how powerful each and everyone was in their own right. Then to stick them in such an incredible ensemble... Beautiful.
With all of the uncertainty of our world Mary Tyler Moore reminds us that their is still good. She wasn't just a character but the representation of the light that so many women shine so brightly with. thank you Mary.
She was a woman that sold her soul for fame and money . You do not make it in Hollywood unless you do . You must do horrible demonic things for that fame and riches. Not just in the industry she was in but in sports as well any industry where you become rich. You worship a false light.
I am so saddened by the passing of Mary. I feel like I have lost a member of my family. The world has lost a sweetheart with a beautiful smile. I love you Mary. Rest in Peace👼❤❤❤
Me too! Watched Mary on both Dick Van Dyke Show and MTM Show and still do.Everyone praised her sweet ways.Cloris said what you see on TV is what you got in life from Mary.Nice, kind and generous. I think she made us feel like family with her warm personality. I really miss her and Cloris and the whole gang.
Mary Tyler Moore was wonderful. I cannot believe how influential her TV show has been. And consider how much incredible talent it had to keep it moving with top-notch ratings.
MY personal favorite scene was when Mary is being "let go" from the newsroom so Lou Grant has Phyllis and Rhoda visit her as a surprise. I'm such a sucker for reunions.
What a babe & what a woman MTM was' a stunner' she was my first crush from the first time I seen her on 60s tv' loved her from boy to man' a beautiful woman indeed RIP; MTM
A fun show, that was extremely well-written and acted by great actors. Mary was a superior comedic actress - may she rest easy knowing you had us all laughing!
My earlest memory is of MTM on the Dick Van Dyke show. She was wonderful. The show had the best cast ever. And Carl Reiner appeared quite often. It was perfect
I grew up watching MTM and always adored her, she could make me laugh. Years later I had the occasion to meet her as she was a regular passenger aboard an airline I worked for. When you have someone that you admire sometimes it's best not to meet them for they often are nothing like the characters they portray. I will always delight in watching Mary Richards.
@@zapkvr The positions I held required daily interactions with many of the world’s most famous. I’m well aware of the nature of “acting” and quite used to observing behavior contrary to public personas. Some behavior is so contrary to not only a public persona, but to the norms of society. I’m not saying that was, or wasn’t the case here. I was only commenting on what my experience was. Why would you care what I have to say enough to comment on it? Kinda weird. I’m only 66 and I know that.
I love in the Hats Off scene there is that old lady in the background with a scarf over her hair in curlers lookin at Mary tossing her hat up and appears to look disapprovingly and saying Trollop.
I am we remember the celeberties that went before us that shows respect which alot of people don't have.Old tv shows made us laugh and cry and theyallwere enjoyable to watch. They werebased on family values. Now most people don't have that or respect or morals They focus on hatefulness, negative, evilness, crimes, racism, and everything else drugs, killings.Back then everyone got along now too much corruption not good for our children .Don't you agree ?what happened to people that had love, caring ,and kindness, andrespect for others.
I agree with some of these comments at the hosts are just patronising to go with the flow of everybody tributing Mary there is no way in hell that Michael Strahan on a Saturday night was watching The Mary Tyler Moore Show when he was a prepubescent boy
My favorite was her IRS audit where she presented the auditor with a popsicle stick with the amount of tax she paid written on it. Also, I always loved her giant M on the wall and wished I could have my initial in my room. Saturday nights, babysitting, standard watch.
My favorite episode is where the film clips of the The Happy Homemaker luncheon and corn prices ( hogs being fed slop) got mixed up. Ted; " Look at that sow go after that slop!" While Betty White was eating ..LMAO
I never expected that Mary would wear a dress like that, not just the character she was playing, but who she was off camera. She was wonderful and I miss her.
I loved MTM. The kinds of show that just gives me a good laugh every time. I much prefer these sitcom than what they're putting out today. Only Ed Asner and Betty White are alive today.
Remembering miss Mary Tyler ( love is all around ) Moore sweetness I love watching her on me TV way back a few years when they had her show on she just a h cuts up and she really know how to make a man feel also she knew exactly what was on her mind and wasn't afraid to speak upon it either all I know is that she will be miss and I'll never ever forget her so here's to you miss Mary sweetness happy birthday to you darling angel gracious ness love always and forever more Andrew Jr peace everyone.
I liked the fact that the writers recognized the newsroom and its characters were a better focus than Mary's apartment. Although Rhoda and Phyllis were interesting and well played by Harper and Leachman, the shift to the office was a great idea.
The green dress she had on is definitely questionable we need to have good influences but we all need Jesus sin is temporary and things without God are meaningless but there is a hell and a heaven both are eternal and Jesus can change us completely he is the way to God have a relationship and that’s your way to God he can change us to dress more modest, be more kind obey God etc 😊
GMA no respect for this show at all. Robin is a closet racist. George is the submissive side kick. The only one there with honesty is Laura. Lost all respect for this show what little I had after Robin's interview with that thing Jossie. She needed to apologize to all the viewers....Nope not at word. If it was a white dude...Total other story.
I thought I was tuning in to see some of the BEST OF MARY TYLER MOORE”????? Instead I have to suffer these nimrods from ABC T.V. No way, I’m tuning out. Have a great day.
This GMA segment was uploaded only 5 years ago, but half the hosts now would be canceled for their behavior. Still, Mary Tyler Moore was amazing. She was came off as hilarious, smart, strong, and sexy as hell.
Also @ 4:26, not much enthusiasm from the audience when the "Tossing of the Hats" moment took place. Very sarcastic!! RIP Mary Tyler Moore. She will definitely, & always have a very warm place in my heart of hearts!!!
The Late Great Edward Asner AKA Lou Grant was laid to rest in his hometown of Kansas City instead of a Hollywood cemetery for the Stars which spoke volumes to me. The photo of Ed in the football pose on his office wall was taken at Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, KS. RIP🙏
Laura is a little confused she said that " when Ted and Phyllis stopped by".. when she was talking about her clip Mary wearing the green dress and she is confused because Fred and Georgette stopped by Phyllis was the downstairs neighbor she was not dead girlfriend
Folks, if you're showing a clip to demostrate something special, how about this? Don't talk over it. Do we really want to hear you chortling nonsense over the clip? No one does, literally.
