Thank you Joe and Nic for taking us to places we might not ever visit during our lifetime that is why i sincerely appreciate your efforts in showing these to us. I wish you both and your family good health and more blessings in life. Love you both.❤
*I've lived in Maryland, all my life, 29 years now. I, sadly, have never heard of this town. I've heard of Crisfield before, as I had a job near there but not the town itself. Maryland is so beautiful along the coast. I love it here. Especially ocean city.*
Western Marylander here! MD born, PGH raised! Came back to Maryland ! Crisfield is a great town! You can take a boat from Crisfield to Smith Island ! I highly recommend taking that trip! The Maryland state cake is the multi-layered Smith Island cake! They ship these cakes all over the USA! Smith Island had a restaurant that served foods "Family Style" ! Wonderful place to get and eat steamed crabs! With Old Bay seasoning! My mom's side of the family married into an old MD family. They came to MD in 1643, 9 years after the MD colony was first established by Catholics escaping from England! St. Mary's County, St. George's Island! MD is for CRABS! 🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦪🦪🦪🦪🦪 🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬
The mural in Crisfield is to honor not only the local crabbing industry but more specifically Hurricane Hazel and the other Black seafood workers, without whom the city could never have been the crab capital of the world. Thanks for visiting the Eastern Shore!
A lot of people tend to believe the Eastern Shore is inexpensive. That is not the case at all. Like any other place, the more remote areas of the Eastern Shore can be inexpensive, but when you talk about places like Talbot and Queen Anne's County, they can be pretty pricey. In fact, Talbot and Queen Anne's counties are two of the wealthiest counties in Maryland, and St. Michael's has the most millionaires per capita than any other place in the country. The average cost of a house in Queen Anne's County is about $500,000, and if you get in the Queenstown to Stevensville areas, be prepared to cough up 600,000 t0 800,000. A one bedroom rental is going to run you about 1,500.00 a month in most of the uppershore areas, and in several areas, you're going to start at about 2,000 for a one bedroom. The Eastern Shore has become a resort area, and with it brings a higher cost of living than many people realize.
You're correct! I was born and raised in Talbot County (the crown jewel of the Eastern Shore). Oxford and St. Michaels have many estates owned by some of the wealthiest businessmen and politicians from the Baltimore, Washington, DC, and Philadelphia areas. There are two main reasons why Talbot and Queen Anne's counties are more prosperous than the rest of the eastern shore counties....1) there is an abundance of habitable waterfront property. 2) the proximity to the Chespeake Bay Bridge, which makes Baltimore and Washington a shorter trip than most of the other poorer, remote corners of the Eastern Shore.
My dad was what you would call a deep sea fisherman and his boat would leave from Crisfield. Thanks for sharing. Maybe next time you can visit Smith Island not much there these days but the Smith Island chocolate cake is pretty famous.
@@nemonameless6082 That is untrue Maryland is south of the Mason Dixon Line. You can look this up, it's public information. In fact, Maryland was extremely divided during the war with much of the state allying with the Confederacy. Our flag even shows that because the red & white and yellow and black are each the Union MD state flag, and the Confederate MD state flag. If I go up north some of them think I have a Southern accent. In Philly they'd never notice.
Maryland is north of the mason Dixon but that doesn’t hold significance TODAY because there is no way way in hell that Maryland is a southern state. If you actually go to md and ask the people here 90 percent would classify it as a northeast / mid Atlantic state rather than south it’s not even close. Every state has rural areas in the us that’s not what defines a southern state, Baltimore it’s biggest city is a northeast city through and through and any proof needed can come from it basically Being a mini Philadelphia. Even Virginia is arguable at this point where exactly the line ends but Maryland is indisputably not a southern state
Hopefully you guys did not go to Elkton, I lived there briefly about 8 years ago and it was a terrible experience, unbelievable crime rate for a small town Avoiding all costs I wouldn't even stop for gas
Delightful! I would never get to see these lovely little towns without your videos. The best crab by far is in Maryland. My cousin lives in suburban Baltimore / DC and when I visit we always make sure to treat ourselves to Maryland crabcakes. When I think of the East coast, I think dense population and unbridled urban development. How enlightening to see that there are actually small towns with all the charms we have come to expect along with the requisite Dollar Generals and an occasional yard with lots of stuff! And I second the comment of@lindad9059 below: Joe, you are a superb narrator!
Yeah I feel like I need to get away. I always wanted to live in Seattle, and almost did twice. But it's not the same place it once was. California is amazing too, but the expensive factor. And of course all the issues that come with the West-Coast nowadays. All of the great places are going to be expensive as people flee to them.
What beautiful small towns for sure. Nice places to retire, I agree with you about the hustle and bustle of the big cities, too much. Small town living for me as well. Have a great day
Eastern shore native , thanks for showing the beauty of this area. Historically the eastern shore (along route 301) was apart of the Underground Railroad.. don’t feel like it’s talked about enough. From crisfield all the way to Elkton.
Great video Joe thanks. I have been to the first town. When I was stationed at Quantico. A few of us would take in costal towns when we were off. Checking out everything but mostly the fresh seafood. Love that peaceful quietness plenty big enough for me. All were nice places but my favorite was The first one. And those crime and poverty numbers are nothing to be sneezed at in the others as well. Great video and commentary as usual. Thanks for the ride along. Safe travels my friend. Keep filming I’ll keep watching
Thank you for visiting these small Maryland towns and providing all the great information. There are many more towns in the state with a story to tell, if you have the time
I am 66 yrs old and lived in MD all my life, and enjoyed this video! I am in the "rich" part of the state (Balto-DC area), and yes, its all government money. The Eastern Shore of MD is called "Land Of Pleasant Living", and has a lot of history. Read the book "Chesapeake". Ahh, steamed crabs and Natty Boh beer! Oyster shells were ground up and used in cement to build the Baltimore City row houses in the late 1800s. As with western MD, the Eastern Shore is like a different country compared to the middle of the state. Maryland's slogan used to be "America In Miniature". Truly beautiful places, but alas, governed by Maryland politics. LOL. Thanks, Joe and Nic!
"Government money", by the way, really means "Private contractor money". People working government jobs aren't the ones pulling in 7 figure incomes in Chevy Chase. Those are people that own major contracting companies. A few decades ago we used to just build our infrastructure and run our services by employing people and building things directly, not for profit, but for public benefit. Thanks to certain influences in our politics, now we have to pay private, for-profit contractors to do the work instead. They bid on contracts, and the ones who can do it the cheapest (not the best) win the contract. So we get the work from the lowest bidder, who then pays their workers peanuts, uses cheap materials, all so they can send more money to their owners and shareholders. If we're going to get political about this issue here, let's at least be clear about why there's all these people getting rich off of government money: Corruption and defunding of actual public services like the ones that built this country's infrastructure in the first half of the 20th century.
There is a small hospital in Crisfield on the way out of town. Its called Edward McCready Memorial Hospital. It is accessible from the road and by water yes it has its own boat dock.
Poor older folks can’t live anywhere. 14 thousand a year is so little to live on. Sad we have to settle in bad towns or live in small room somewhere.. We live and work and raise our kids and we have no real future like we dreamed of when we were younger. Most can relate to me.
Very cool video! I love Snow Hill! Amazing architecture! I love the gothic church. Gorgeous window. Some very cool homes too. The opening shot to this video was perfect! Looking forward to Annapolis !
The Pocomoke City National Guard building looks exactly like the Laurel, MD NG Armory building that we have. Ours thankfully still has a use and has been kept from decay so far.
I was thrilled you were able to go inside the Church. I LOVE stained glass. Thank you for showing us this beautiful & affordable part of Maryland. I'm from Massachusetts & we also have a Worcester. Many of our towns & cities sound much different than they are spelled. You did great with the pronunciation, exactly right. Safe travels!😊
Eastern Shore is beautiful. And no one can beat our crabs! no one! I spent my summers in OC b/c we had beach homes on the bay and ocean front. I took it for granted as a kid, which was sad! I didn't realize that I was very lucky to call this part of Maryland my own. Maryland is like most states. Each area has its own culture. The DC-Metro area is nothing like the Eastern Shore, but it's where the money is, which is what keeps Maryland at the top. 6-figure salary is the norm here.
This was great like always. I do hope you can go to Alaska in the future and maybe to the most northwestern point, we'll see what the future holds. Anyways, that church looked great especially inside. Movie theaters don't seem that popular anymore. Like I said, great exploring as always. We're thankful for following along the journey.
Great video on an often forgotten area of Maryland. The eastern shore area looks like a nice quiet place to retire. Next time i go back, I plan on visiting the easrern shore.
I've lived in Pocomoke city my whole life ani love it . That brick building you showed was the old police station and in the back was the salvation army we use to go to play basketball/cheerleading and football yeas ago when i was a kid. You should definitely visit stockton lol damn near deserted . There are many other remote small towns here
Thank you Joe, you are the best man on RU-vid. I smile each time I see you have posted. I often watch your videos twice. I send you and Nicole love from B.C. Canada 🇨🇦 ♥️
Just want you to know how much I look forward to your streams. Love all the info you provide too. I'd love to live in Crab City! Looked so charming. Never had Blue Crab. Anyway, thanks again for your efforts to entertain and your work on the editing of your streams. Till we meet again! Always be safe! Liz in Milwaukee, WI 🥰 PS: That chewing gum ghost mural was fantastic!! Glad they kept it.
Looked that house up from 504 7th st in pickle city. $239,990. It’s beautiful inside! Everything and I mean everything has been redone. Just gorgeous! Hope they get what they are asking considering the info you gave about the area. Great video. I might visit Crisfield. Lived in Maryland all my life. Was in Dundalk now in Bel Air. Linda
Wow I live in the state of Maryland close to DC Metro area in Bowie the money side, very high cost of living like the rest of the state , and I can’t recall ever hearing about Crisfield, yet I’ve heard of Salisbury and it’s near there , that’s sad on my part . When you said it’s sometimes referred to as “The forgotten town” that’s so true in many ways “very low median household income, cost of living , especially medium housing cost 127k” that’s unheard of especially in Maryland , and many places . I have heard of Snowhill & Pocomoke never been to any though , they look like old beautiful towns in the south not MD…Thanks for the video .
@tellibear there are multi million dollar homes in bowie, upper marlboro , brandywine ect. Also, PG county and Charles county MD, are the wealthiest black counties in the country. So the gentleman was right in saying the " money side"
@@chriss.8349 believe me, I know, but there’s also lot of impoverish places that no offense are still getting taxed out the Yazoo. We’re so taxed in the state of Maryland. A lot of people wanna leave and that’s gonna make it worse on everybody here.
Old low cost houses made of wood are a maintenance and repair trap. Eastern shore MD is very wet and humid. The food and utilities are in line with state high income levels. MD real property and income taxes high compared to other states. Sales tax low. Not a good retirement area unless wealthy and pensioned. MD has enormous public assistance programs and that's how those in poverty live. Generational poverty in some areas. That's why it is sparsely populated. Area peaked 100 years ago and never came back due to over harvesting, tobacco ban, and cheap low quality imported goods. Maryland used to provide fresh seafood for many US restaurants and markets and high quality tobacco to major cigarette brands.
A great video as always ! Lovely old towns ! The gothic-style church in Snow Hill is beautiful, and the stained glass windows are gorgeous ! Thanks so much, Joe and Nic.😊❤
Watching you and Nicole on my flat screen 🖥 The boat bock is freaking amazing. Joey, you must 4k you dude's have to watch this yourselves in 👀 it whoop whoop🤭 . These are some murals . I'd fix that white house 🏠 😏 . It's not too rough that house . I 😍 that 👻 haunted 🏠. So they must have some pretty decent jobs then 🤔. You pronounced it correctly 😉 joey. Outstandingly on my 🖥 set .I like Gothic 👍 art myself amazing indeed. 👏👏
Notice many homes are built on really tall foundations? The had to be lifted due to the tide. Its very low elevation. Superstorm Sandy did some major damage.
My husband and I have started enjoying your videos just recently. One question I have that comes to mind in all of your rural/disadvantaged towns is how far do these folks have to go to shop for both groceries and other essentials. As a native Marylander, I know that Salisbury would be where those in Snow HIll, Crisfield, etc would go, but I recently watched one from Mount Bayou, MS. I didn't see a grocery store - or any business that's currently open. That might be some interesting factoid to include. We really enjoy the history that you present and it's context to the present. GREAT JOB! (Great enough for us to subscribe!) You've taken us to places we didn't know existed.
So folks down there, deal island, oriole mostly come to where I live in Princess Anne or south to pockomoke to grocery shop and yes Salisbury if you want more variety. There are a few mom and pop provisions type stores but by enlarge they come to food lion or Walmart. From crisfeild to the food lion is Princess Anne is about 20 minutes and the same to Walmart in pockomoke. Folks in snow hill typically jump on 113 and go to Berlin to shop.
How interesting.... I'm from the Eastern Shore, but I currently live in Western Maryland (been here for many years now). I actually attended college relatively close to the three towns featured in this video.
Joe...I absolutely love going with you & Nic to towns I'll never get to see ! You do an excellent narration & are a wonderful speaker. I always look forward to watching your videos. Thank you so much....😊😊
21:06. That flag painting is post 1959. It shows the 50 star pattern. In fact, Google Maps shows the Wrigley mural, but the flag isn't there. So, it's quite new.
I am a Snow Hill native that lives in downtown, and I was wondering why you did show any of the houses in Snow Hill because they tell a different story and it's not one of poverty. When you were at All Hallows Church, I live on that Street, and that is where the Governor Mansion is, and it's one of the most beautiful homes in the county.
Maryland is full of 2 types of people those like me who have live here there whole life and love the state and the other type of people who come from out of state just to work in DC and cause issues for locals
Another state I have been to besides Illinois that can be divided into three distinct areas. From the Virginia state line somewhat northeast to the Pennsylvania state line { DC---Balt area } , like one big city . West of that the narrow panhandle Appalachia somewhat akin to PA . To the east on that the Eastern Shore a quaint southern vibe . At 13:20 a couple of old Atlantic gas pumps at least sixty years old , 31.9 a gallon . At 15:32 an old small town armory . Happy Trails !
the only bad part about crisfield is it is only 3 feet above sea level, so it will floodd very easily because it is built on a floodplain., I have lived in Maryland all my life and have family that lives in crisfield Maryland. the locals pronounce it as woo -ster. maryland thanks for the video
DC has plenty of really quiet places, which yet have a history to them... as a person who has spent quite a bit of time in DC with nothing particular on my schedule, I can say with certainty... if you want to visit the great monuments, certainly go to the mall... but to experience DC start from the Potomac and work your way up the small narrow streets, then, only then go up towards the Smithsonian from the side of Kennedy center, that view builds much better. circle the Capitol to really take in it's balance and it's envisioned design (maybe pondering on it's ideal versus those who we let use it as their seat, maybe not...), go to see the steps of the High Court in their cold grandeur... see the Roman Forum that is Columbus square with it's palatial Union station, even when full, it dwarfs those who are in it's presence.... as for the Mall... that's best seen in the evening or early morning.
On the move, Crispville has a lot of houses and empty lots for sale. Most of the 2 story house were built 1900- 1910. Condo's on water front 350k-440k.
It's okay if you don't mind being in a place that rolls up the sidewalks and puts them away by early evening, but if you're a sportsman you're in the right place.
Couldn't find the house but the condos sure look nice. They run around $300,000 to $360,000. Home prices are all over the map. $49,000 to over $400,000. Waterfront is beautiful.
Remember getting river crabs really big one's some of the best crab ever had you don't see them anywhere but there come in late August crazy prices probably 160 a dozen i kid u not these crabs where so big they'd rip the tongues out of your hand lmao 😊
I’ve lived in Maryland all my life, my significant other is from New York. She wants to go back there but I can’t see myself ever leaving Maryland, I absolutely love living here, I think Maryland is the most beautiful state. We have so much in terms of different types of areas and just absolutely beautiful places to see.
Very nice especially the churches you featured in this video. I hope you found some Crab. I used to drive from Newark, DE to Virginia Beach down the Delmarva Peninsula where this video was taken. It brings back memories of really great sleepy towns. The Police are notorious for ticketing speeders so be careful! Salisbury MD is full of chicken processing plants (Perdue among others) and you can find towns filled with migrants who work in the plants. We used to call anything below the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal (C&D to locals) Lower Slower. So you are in the laid back portion of the region. In Delaware there is Slaughter Beach where you can go off shore fishing for flounder. If you are into fishing this region is exactly the perfect place to retire to. Laid back slower life and fishing every day. What's not to like about that?
The Mackemi church was beautiful, the stained glass windows were awesome. You don't see churches like that everyday. Thanks for sharing. Safe travels to you.
Actually a church in 1100s England wouldn’t look like that. It’d be more castle like in appearance. Grey stone. That would be more 1300-1400s and then the Victorian revival period.
I've been there before. About 6 years ago. My mom saw an arts n craft festival they were having. We drove from Baltimore area. I actually want to go back and do something there. The day we went was actually the day of the second Ellicott city flood. As we were coming home crossing the Bay bridge we could see the stome. We got home and i opened the basement door and our basement was full of water.
I was born and raised in Salisbury MD. I moved to Oklahoma 5 years ago. I miss the seafood and the beaches, but Maryland has changed so much ....and not for the better 😞
Many of the homes for sale in Pocomoke have sale pending on them. That one on 7th is pretty nice inside, completely redone. If I win the lottery, I will buy it as my eastern retreat.🏘 By the way, I live just south of Bend, Oregon, still affordable here, but homes have gained in value quite a bit as Bend has gone up. Enjoy watching your videos, opens your eyes. 👀
Pocomoke and Snow Hill are in my county, Crisfield is about 50 minutes from my house. We have some really cool places on the shore and Worcester (Woo-Ster) county.
Can't wait for the Annapolis video. I live there and in Berlin ,MD part time. Berlin was just up the road from Snow Hill. It was voted 'America's Coolest Small Town" back in 2017.
Holy smokes! That house you showed for sale in Pocomoke City, they want $239,900 for it!!! How do you afford that on a tiny income??? Thank you for showing Crisfield. My best friend lives there and now I have an idea of what to expect when I visit. As always, thank you for the excellent videos and sharing your travels with us 👍
