Let's take Maschine Mikro MK 3 from Native Instruments for a spin and make a quick little sample based beat on it!
I hope this will give you some sense of what it actually is to use it when making sampled beats. I have a quite strange way of chopping my samples but it works great for me with the Mikro MK3!
A nice and simple beat, some scratching and some good times :)
BOOM!
Hit me up with questions below. I appreciate the crap out of every last one of you!
Don't mention the baseline, please ;)

I was considering getting a MK3 for myself. I'm not considering it anymore. I'm sold. Take my money. In all seriousness, I love the looks, the way it plays and how it operates and the beat you made with this in a short amount of time is just incredible. The usage of slicing the sample and how you structured the overall beat was just genius. Personally, some minor vinyl crackle or distortion on the chopped sample and some Foley noise in the background would of really given it a lo-fi feel. A filter on the drums during the beats' intro would of been really lovely too, especially if you put in an 808 or backing pad that kicked in just as the filter came off the drums. Absolutely amazing, you've sold me on this thing. Incredible content, immediately subscribed.

Hey Accurate! So I dig your workflow and sound bro. Honestly feel I have a similar sound.. and we use the some of the same equipment from Native! My question is actually about the ending of this video.. scratching on the beat. I have a Z2.. and I’m using a Maschine Mikro MK2.. so I obviously have Traktor and Maschine software. What is the best way to setup or connect the Z2 and turntable to Maschine so I can easily sample a record or scratch over one of my beats? I feel like there has to be an easier way than how im doing it.. cheers!

Way cool demo Accurate! Inspiring. You got sick skills operating with sampling on full Maschine. It is great to see and get a feel of doing this on Mikro /with mouse and monitor instead. Makes it more approachable for Maschine flow newbie, very drooling to try (burned my computer at the moment). I mean not vinyl samples like you do, but in my case I like to connect guitar playing some licks or hardware synth with unique sound and play with it more creative. Never got right environment designed for that trully. Trying to make it in large linear DAW usually goes tedious and feels awkward. In smaller grid approach apps, it might not be as handy to chop a piece and (by-design or the tool) have it tuned to the pads right away. Sound like new horizons for the flow! TNX!
@AccurateBeats
@AccurateBeats 6 лет назад
It sounds like you could develop a great little workflow with Maschine and that kind on raw material! I think the Maschine Mikro MK3 could be great for that stuff but the full size Maschine is definitely a better device overall. Thanks for watching and commenting man, I appreciate that!

I’ve been watching yr live session, took me couple nights to enjoy. Like reversing guitar is one of my fav lil tricks too. Watching how it’s done with ease..... don’t get me wrong, I still trying to convince myself that Mikro will do (and it’s shape is the only phisical space I have in two setups), but more I get into playing it realizing how full MK3 is the Komplete (no pun intended) living organism :) today spend an evening with it again. Had to take Moog (subsequent 37 cv) off the table, but MK3 just sings and responds. Intaking more skills and watch less monitor or reach to mouse, but only can imagine how much more fun it can be at kraft level. Puzzled and can’t decide. Maybe just need both Mikro and Mk3? lol, and a bigger table ... and quit job :)

I'm thinking of getting one of these units. Does the software accept other formats of sounds like the one's I already own or do I have to get all native instruments sound packs?
@antekoh
@antekoh 6 лет назад
I’m curious why you choose to work across so many different platforms? Native instruments, Akai, OP-1 and although I don’t recall seeing one but it is a safe bet there’s a DAW involved as well for mixing down and recording scratch’s, vocals and live instruments? I ask because I loath learning new software the keyboard short cuts get jumbled in my head and I feel like I could be making music instead of learning another user interface. What are the significant difference between the Akai and the Native instruments that make them unique enough that you continue working with both? Is it that their work flows are inspiring in different ways, or can you hear a discernible difference in the audio quality between the two? One is better for drums while the other for is better for pads and instruments? Do you prefer the filters on one over the other but find the sequencer is more intuitive on the other? I recognize that the OP-1 isn’t just a sampler but more of an environment plus the sampler has its own unique sound it has it limitations while having a unique sound specifically when samples are pitched down. I’ve worked on sp1200, s950’s, mpc 3000, and Roland’s s760. Each has its own sound characteristics that the others lack (primarily because they allow for individual samples to have variable bit and sample rates unlike today’s samplers and DAWs as far as I know) Sorry for the wordy message I hope it makes some sense :) cheers

Hey! Great questions. Well.. There are many parts to this. For starters I do run a RU-vid channel about these kind of things. Sometimes I get equipment sent to me and sometimes I just buy new stuff because I like to try them out for a while, show them om YT and then resell them. Another part of it is that Im just a geek who's really interested in gear and tech in general and third I get a lot of inspiration from trying new techniques, products and workflows. If I'm under pressure and I need to produce music quickly I always go to Maschine MK3 and nothing else. That's just because I know the workflow of Maschine as the back of my hand. When it comes to audio quality you're exactly right about the OP1 and the unique sound of it. Besides that the MPC and Maschine sounds pretty much alike. The MPC has something going on that makes drums feel more punchy but thats not reason to keep it. I just enjoy having options to choose from and the difference in workflow triggers different parts of my creativity. Thanks for asking!

If you're trying to figure out whether to use the extra money saved from buying the Mikro towards an interface, keep in mind that the MK3 does have its own interface built in as well. From what I saw in this video, I'd say that a sample-based producer would probably have a much easier time with the MK3.

Thank you for reviewing this micro maschine.. good price but like you said not like his big brother and now i understand how good and easy the Maschine is to work with and edit, chop and modulate samples almost direct, like on the spot with the 2 screens.. This mini version of it works also realy well but it's like taking much more time and is not that straight forward to use. The price of the 2 maschines is now most important in my opinion. Do you want to spend like 2.5X the price for the normal device and create tracks/beats faster or am i happy with this mini version at the lower price and struggle more at a beginners standpoint. 🤔 .. Also in my head is the novation keyboard/ pad that comes with ableton 11 software for free .. but then again i might have to buy a laptop for the music extra ..

It should be great for a beginner but it has a learning curve, no doubt about it. As far as we know right now the Mikro MK3 doesn’t have a midi mode so it won’t be able to control Logic (I hope that’ll change) For now it only works with Maschines own softwa. Thanks for watching!!!

So this is perfect and exactly what I’m looking for, to create jazz percussive improve jams, my only hesitation is that I can get a second hand maschine for say £100 more second hand than the micro mk3. Is the micro capable enough for fast mash ups of loops in improv setting with say a couple of other bits of hardware, bass synth etc. or is it worth investing more for the full maschine, pretty dam easy to get one second hand. I’m lost in the weeds abit coming from studying classical and being locking in a DAW, I’m trying to brake out and build a little tabletop hardware setup. Semi modular. I could take midi out of the laptop with the micro and have that sync and trigger other hardware modules.. anyone any thoughts?

I think I couldn't stand making 'music' like this... staring at little screens and fumbling with buttons seems ok while editing something you recorded, or even adding a missing track. But it kinda takes the life out of music. Its like working in an office vs. working as a hunter or forester in the wild. But then, we're busy eliminating the wild anyway, so I guess this is par for the course. NI's website is really enticing with all their sample tracks playing their "instruments". . . And maybe it'll still be great for people like me, to use in post alongside Studio One etc. Maybe I need to find a video from someone with a completely different workflow from playing **tetris** with samples. Not trying to pan your video, it was quite good in showing how you use Machine Micro, and what you can do with it, although maybe a lot was left out, because you focused on making that track. Also, this was the first video I watched on "Machine" It just did the opposite of making me want to sit there and do that. I mean, playing drums or any instrument is such a pleasure! It seems like skipping the best part of music?

For an introduction to NI world (coming from Ableton), I would probably (and want to) get the MK3. But I have an important question for you and I hope you will answer me. My OS is El Capitan (10.11.6). If I want to use the software, probably the latest version, the minimum system requirement is 10.12. Does that mean there is no way I can use previous versions of Maschine 2.0 Upgrading means... buying a new Macbook Pro. And I don't feel the need to do so right know. Can you give me more information about that issue? Thank you and greetings from Canada.

Can anyone please help? Can't find the info i need anywhere... I have the new "Maschine MK3 Mikro". Not the larger "Maschine MK3" I have installed all current software for Maschine MK3 Mikro and Logic Pro X. First... There is no "Maschine MK3 Mikro" to choose in the current "NI Controller Editor" software??? So... I used the "Maschine Controller Mk3" because it looks exactly the same in the transport and pad area. "The Mikro and Mikro 2 Controller" do not look the same. I went through all your custom steps In the NI Controller Editor..... For the "Maschine MK3 Controller"..... Second... When I get to the setup part of it inside Logic Pro X there is no "Maschine Virtual" Input or Output to choose? There is nothing in the "Output Port" or "Input Port" that says "Virtual" anything? I have even tried to set it up with the Mackie Controller but still never anything that says "Virtual" to choose from. It's just never there? So i also tried with the "NI Controller Editor" for all the NI "Mikro" products. When it comes time to set up in Logic Pro X, there is never anything that says "Virtual" to choose? So frustrating. I've been doing this for a long time and usually i'm really good at figuring this out but feels like they sent this hardware out unfinished? The software doesn't work for setting up control in Logic. Has anyone with a new "Maschine Mikro MK3" been able to figure this out? Do you only get the "Virtual" option with the larger "Maschine Mk3"? Did it come with any other Maschine? Did Logic Pro X take it out with an update? I need this transport control inside Logic. And pads would be nice to. But without the "Virtual" option there is nothing i can do. Any help is appreciated. Thanks so much. (if there is a link to anywhere explaining this please post it here for me).

I really love your work and the resulting tracks, some kickass work! I wonder who "pioneered" this style of choppy sample-based music, or in other words who are your musical inspirations? I need more of this music :D. Thanks!

d3vr that’s a great question man. I concur with the other commenter. Check out Dilla’s Donuts, an absolute staple. I will also recommend these producers: DJ Premier (one half of the group Gangstarr with GURU) Pete Rock Madlib (check out his collab with MF DOOM titled Madvillainy) DJ Shadow 9th Wonder Alchemist DJ Babu For a more electronic/dance style DJ Rashad from Chicago is where it’s at. There are plenty of others that I’m sure people will chime in with, but this is a great start. Have fun diggin in the crates!

right, they were making this sound for Detroit and New York AND Japan before they had easier software. just tapes, old school turntables with vinyl. still I respect anyone that get to this level of sound engineering. if you look at groups like the roots, they turned this sound into an actual band long before the jimmy fallon show

Try to understand the functional difference between micro and mk3 version. No screens- ok.. what else? What about software? It comes with same sample packs and soft? Can use completely same like mk3 with two screens?

Hello sir, I am planning to get into finger drumming. So I am thinking of getting this Mikro Mk3 as my first controller. I want to know have you faced any issues with it so far like Ghost note triggering issues or more? I have heard from some Mikro Mk3 users that they have faced the ghost note triggering issues with it. So would love to know your experience with it.

It's good for making ambient/trip-hop tracks? Or better buy a midi controller with keyboard? I'm new in producer environment that's why I asking. It will be good choice for the first midi controller? Cheers man!

Oh... with the amount of work I have at the moment I’m afraid I can produce beats for anything else right now. If I’d had to put everything else aside the price tag would be ridiculous for those beats. Maybe I’ll be able to do stuff like this early next year. Thanks for watching the videos!

can you make a video on how to load a song that a producer wants to sample on RU-vid into maschine? I need it in step by step form. I got some fire beats in my head but I don't know how to load a certain song into maschine how you just did in this video. I have the same beat maschine u have.

So beautiful n' comforting sounding. BUT, can it work with ugly & uncomforting sounds? In other words, pushing it to it's limit.

Been having mine for a while now. How do you import (mp3) music on your hard drive into the software to chop? Does it has to be wave files and how can I convert to wave without using itunes. I don't use iTunes.

There’s a way to chop samples with the mikro hardware now using the pads. It is harder to get the same level of control but it’s definitely a great controller! I honestly thing the full size Maschine models are alot better when it comes to the workflow of the device but the software it’s 100% the same :) Good luck!

Nope. Personally I tend to chop up my samples so that the original bpm does t matter
