This is Bruno Piantoni´s highly modified Maserati Ghibli, and it is certainly among the most unique Monsters we have captured in the last year. It is already an incredibly rare car on its own, but much more so to see one being transformed into a full blown Racing machine as this 2.0L V6 Twin-Turbo is, here racing at Verzegnis Hillclimb 2019
With over 400Hp thanks to some major engine tuning, this machine also benefits from its fiberglass bodywork to lower the weight towards the 1100Kg mark, and while at it applying a whole host of aerodynamic changes that really take the Italian machine from a Classic looking thing to some sort of Frankenstein-esque Time Attack racer. In any case we hope to see a lot more of it in the future and watch closely its evolution...

90 deg. V6. Engine based on Merak engine with 4 valves per cylinder. This engine made well over 300hp in a car called Maserati Racing, and we are talking about 2L displacement and late '80 or early '90. This engine was used in world record breaking speed boat (stock internals, tuned, higher rev limiter, 400hp). Maserati made a 36V prototype on this block, and this is the one and only 6 valves/cylinder engine known to Humans. IMHO underrated gem.

It had a firing interval of 90-150-90-150-90-150. Two rods on the same journal. Four main bearings and three big end bearings. Crank was short and very strong, perfect primary balance and minimal secondary forces about 1/10 of a 4 cylinder. You got to remember a odd fire v6 only has one piston at TDC at any time, this reduces inertia and make the engine rev easy.

Maserati did a very cool race version of the standard ghibli of the 90s. They were racing in a series of monomarca with main pilot like Larini and several gentleman drivers. The cars were basically standard expect a stripped interior some additional coolers ( coolerfor differentials after added to the ghibli restyling 92) some bigger front bumpers for added cooling and slick tires with special rims. Sealed engines for the all season to proof reliability of their engines/mechanicals and to avoid tricks from the teams. The cars were putting out about 330hp, the races were disputed before formula one races on the major european circuits. The cars were very fast for the time getting close if not surpassing the time obtained by Ferrari 355 racing in the same period in a monomarca season. Some of those cars were also raced with very good results on other categories years after Maserati stopped the program ( Detomaso era). All the issues that are related to the first Biturbo series ( like long start doo to evaporation in the carbs of the fuel for the eat from the ihi turbos, or distribution belts snapping, or electrical issues ( manly doo to the design of the fuse box, by the way, easy to replace and relatively cheap every 10 / 15 years) are mainly related to the early carburateur cars in the early 80s. The fuel injected cars were very easy to mantain and quite bullet proof as engines and gearboxes/ chassis ( ZF and later getrag). 222,224,ghibli II, were very solid cars and Maserati solved pratically all the issues that the first series carbed Biturbo had in the beginning. It is fair to say, that Detomaso, sold the car before testing it properly for the need of money ( to save Maserati in that very difficult financial time) and also to fullfil the successful presentation with huge amount of pre orders at the Turin motor show in 81!

Of course, what a brilliant thing to do with an old maserati. At first I thought what a strangely exotic car to risk on a racetrack, but nobody is buying these things and they are cheap as chips and wasting away.

great to see, I have one of the 2.8L export versions - hope he doesn't bend it, only 2200 built, parts are near unobtainium. Lovely engine, cosworth/coscast 4V heads, oversquare, excellent strong bottom end and not-dry sump but good design. Odd-fire 90 degree V6, like three Ducati L-engines in a row firing 120deg apart. Twin Weber-Marelli ECUs controlling coil-on-plug ignition, sequential fuel injection and boost control, very similar to that used on the F40. Slightly daggy (de Tomaso end of era three-box biturbo) but underrated cars IMO. Then there is the Shamal V8 biturbo....

Sounded and looks incredible! You can tell though that climb took its toll on the engine. Oil smoke was increasingly more noticeable as the run continued.

I guess if you are making all your own parts anyway there isnt a downside. The upside is you can tune it to maximize turbo noise.
