I'm trying to figure out who's more bewildered here. It's really one ofthose moments on TV where you have to watch it several times to fully comprehend the lunacy of it all.
I don't think he won an Emmy for this particular episode, but he made such an impression that it was a main factor in Morgan getting the part of Colonel Potter.
“Not now, Marjorie, I’m inspecting the troops!” Henry (Harry) Morgan was just as adept at comedy as he was drama…check out ‘Support Your Local Sheriff”/“…Gunfighter”.
Bob Newhart wasn’t the M.P. I don’t know who was, but Bob had his own show at that time, The Bob Newhart Show, where he played a psychologist, Dr. Robert Hartly.
The first time I ever heard that song, it stuck with me all these years. It switches to German later except for the words "Mississipi Mud"... Love M*A*S*H
If you only knew Harry Morgan from this show you would be surprised by his range. Harry Morgan was mostly known as a dramatic actor until his roles on September Bride and Pete and Gladys. Jack Webb had appeared in a few war movies with Morgan and probably had him in mind when Dragnet was approved for filming. While MASH would occasionally " recycle " guest stars into other roles, I was quite surprised when Harry Morgan went from being a " nutcase " to the new C.O.
He was also in The Apple Dumpling Gang and The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again. Great line from the first film: (to Tim Conway and Don Knotts) You two couldn’t steal candy from a baby, without coming out on the short end of the stick!!
You've made a somewhat amusing but honest mistake. You have his real life first name and his MASH character last name mixed together. His name in real life was Harry Morgan. His character name on MASH was Sherman Potter. Harry Potter is the title character in the novels by J.K. Rowling.
The guy who played Williams (Theodore Wilson) would costar with Harry Morgan on a late '80s sitcom titled "You Can't Take it with You." Mr. Wilson died in 1991 at age 47.
I love this whole episode! This scene is so funny. I see TV Land was cutting the very last scene where Henry comes in to give the news that General Steel got stationed at a stateside post instead of being discharged.
There was a surge about Father Mulcahy singing "Cement Mixer Put'y Put'y" in a resting home I worked at BACK IN THE DAY. They thought a man of the cloth shouldn't have been portrayed singing that song...(??)
My very favourite MASH sequence, hilarious. Did Potter take a demotion in rank to replace Henry. Unfortunately I can imagine this sort of “carry on” today in the Oval Office with equally stunned spectators or at least those awaiting TESTING, if you get my drift.
There were two different characters played by Harry Morgan. In this episode, he played General Steele. He came back as a regular cast member playing Colonel Sherman T Potter, after McLean Stevenson (Lt. Col. Henry Blake) departed the show. Big mistake by McLean, as his post-MASH acting gigs were nothing special.
Yeah, I couldn't believe he said that the 1st time I heard it. & the look on that MP Colonel's face was priceless. (Probably cause I had the same look). lol.
I would argue that this is probably the funniest MASH moments, at least the top 5. Steele is so blatantly crazy and racist at the same time, everyone just stops and stares, not really knowing what to do. Does anyone expect the private to start singing and dancing? The dumbstruck look on everyone's faces............I doubt that many people will appreciate in today's poisonous society, but it's not really a racist moment. It's quite the opposite.
I agree with you on that. This is one of my favorite episodes. I don't totally understand the connection to make this scene racist. Harry Morgan did an excellent job in this episode and the funny thing is the very next season he is playing Col. Potter
Mississippi Mud was a brand of beer produced way back when. The company died and so did the beer. The cost of keeping up the quality may have risen excessively and the brewer decided to calm it quits. I am not lucky enough to gain the formula.
To quote another person's response to a similar IGNORANT TROLL comment: "It was clearly to show that the general is racist and not very intelligent. You can tell by how shocked Hawkeye looks. This is definitely criticizing racism within the US Army and in no way promoting this song or what is implied by that song."
Nice try in filming this off your TV. It's better than nothing, but I was sure hoping to find a clean copy here on RU-vid of this epic scene from one of the greatest shows on TV. I hoped to find it before M*A*S*H gets wrongfully cancelled by the leftist Thought Police. After all. **GASP** M*A*S*H also had... That, that... CHARACTER-- Spearchucker Jones on it during its first three season. He was an African American surgeon who earned his nickname from being an All-American athlete who threw the javelin in college, but there's no point clearing up muddled, off-target thinking with truth
What a wazzer you are ! MASH is obviously anti-right wing. Or perhaps you've only seen the episodes with Colonel Flag ??? And its the right schwingers who like trying to ban things. Like Science.
It was clearly to show that the general is racist and not very intelligent. You can tell by how shocked hawkeye looks. This is definitly critizising racism within the US Army and in no way promoting this song or what is implied by that song.
No, we are actually quite pleased....the General was about to be taken away...how could have asked for more? You tight ass guys need to loosen up..then again some conservatives probably like tight ass guys!
