En las manos adecuadas, creo que lugares como Choco Andino deben ser privados porque así no te preocupas por un cambio de gobierno que no se preocupa por el medio ambiente. Aquí realmente entiendes que su objetivo es la conservación y protección. Y el turismo puede hacer que eso suceda.

We stayed three nights, anything less than that and you'll regret it. Check out their website as they have some special deals. There were Canadians on my trip that bought a package that also included Casa Gangotena in Quito and a trip to Finch Bay in the Galapagos.

$636 at the low end and over $1,000 per night for most months and almost $1,400 per night at the top. Why didn’t she say how much she paid for her stay? Isn’t that key to know for staying at Mashpi lodge?

I have stayed at Mashpi and forked over the $1000 a night fee just to see if all the hype was worth it, and, basically, it is if you can afford it, which I could for three days, but that was it. Very luxurious, plunked down in the midst of the Chocó biosphere, with all the habitat intact. The room was extremely comfortable and the food was great. I was there mainly to photograph birds, and here I encountered the same thing I have with other high end lodges, namely that you can't do anything outside without being accompanied by a guide, which ain't cheap. I tried to explain to the management before I got there that I didn't need a guide to be with me while I spent hours photographing hummingbirds, I just needed access to their feeders. They interpreted this as complaining about the guiding fee, which was high, but was not the point. So I did have a guide with me the entire time I was at the feeders. You can't walk on a trail without a guide. This is so different from other ecolodges in Ecuador, such as Tandayapa, Guango, or you name it. I'm not sure what the thinking is; perhaps the clientele who stay at these super expensive places are so litigious that the management is afraid the guests will sue if they stub their toe, or are so helpless that they can't do anything for themselves outdoors without being led around. Maybe someone can explain it to me, but I wanted to shout, "just leave me alone!"

It is a bit different than other spots although this region is in critical danger and has a lot of research programs going on, so maybe that’s why they are so careful?

@@ayngelina You knew they would get some competition to serve the birding and photography community. Just a few miles away, a local family has turned their property into the Reserva Amagusa. For $10 a day, you can enjoy their trails, hummingbird feeders, and fruit feeders for other birds. They also serve meals. This kind of local involvement is crucial to save endangered habitats. Guess where I’m going when I return to Ecuador in May?

Yes I did know about this spot as Andres is also an avid birdwatcher. It's interesting though when we drove through I noticed people clear cutting the land for tourism, which seems like a bit of an issue as the Choco biosphere will disappear. I think Mashpi is more about conservation and research funded through tourism at a high price. Although it's had quite a few discounts, when we went it was 70% off. Have you gone to Mindo or down to the area surrounding Cuenca in Cajas? I only know the scope of birding because Andres is so active in the community, he's part of an annual global bird counting day and I think this year Ecuador marked a close number to Colombia, which is impressive . And if you look at my Checa treehouse video Andres said it was also a fantastic spot for birding and encouraged the owners not to cut the trees so that they could attract birdwatchers.

It's not a mistake, this is the most expensive hotel in Ecuador. That said, it includes luxury lodging, breakfast, a three course lunch and dinner by a kitchen producing some of the best fine dining in Ecuador, and it also includes a full day of guiding in one of the most biodiverse areas in the world. There are over 400 birds, frogs and trees that you can find here that don't exist anywhere else in the world. And Andres said one of the trails for birdwatchers features a bird so rare that in the community of birdwatching, people would spend that much just on a tour to see that bird. That said, there are fantastic deals right now to encourage travel. I know Canadians in their 20s who came down and were able to pair it with a stay at Casa Gangotena in Quito and Finch Bay in the Galapagos. This is definitely a bucket list experience and right now is the time to jump on it with such a discount.
