Masking a car for paint - how hard can it be?

We visited the workshop of ‪@WhitelandRestorations‬ to "help" mask my Citroen GSA ahead of final paint. They've already done some amazing work on this car, so check out their videos - one more to come once they have painted it. Needless to say, painting a car takes a LOT of time, even before you reach for a paint can. This panel restoration was to repair some scratch damage.

It didn't have to be such a big job but Lewis is a total perfectionist, watching his channel I'm convinced he's a wizard. And agreed, good quality masking tape is game changer 😄

Fun fact, if your cheap masking tape is not coming off the reel without tearing put it in the microwave for thirty seconds. Softens up the glue and away you go. I can verify it works.

It is always a pleasure to watch an artisan at work and I know where I want my TR6 to go for restoration. Logistics may be a tad tough and it will remain a pipe dream for a while, at least until I move back to Europe.

I had a Saturday job,when l was at school, masking cars at the local garage. Much ripping of cheap masking tape, (enough to make a bishop put his foot through a stained glass window), but did learn a similar technique to soft edge masking. A small plastic device to make the fold would be v.useful.
@roxieloot
@roxieloot 2 года назад
Reason for masking like that is to have a soft edge on places that new and old paint meet. Soft egde basically stops a hard/noticeable line of paint (blends) also when demasking won't lift/flake new paint. Preperation when painting cars is the most important thing, rush that end results will not be good. The spraying is the quickest and not that difficult with some practice.

I can certainly see where the labour cost comes in, and of course it takes the same amount of time whether you're doing a Bentley or a Hillman. Personally, I've only ever attempted the Foxanne method of painting.

I have been treating some surface rust on my 2008 Chevrolet Spark. I noticed when sanding off areas of paint on the sills that it goes straight from the yellow colour to bare metal, there seems to be no primer. In other areas there is a white primer. The car was less than 3 years old when I got it so I would think the paint is original.

I maintain, that body shops, with straightening chassis, getting panels to fit properly, and replacing badges and trim etc, on a wide range of cars, is far more skilful than a garage doing cam belts etc. But then I don’t know how to do either 😂

Always interesting to see a job being done properly and in the direction of perfection! I’m a bit of a ‘hold a piece of cardboard up’ style of masking myself. My theory being that I’ll be wet sanding and buffing my attempts, anyway, so I’ll get rid of the overspray at the same time. Not sure if that says more about me or the types of vehicles I have… Nice tips about the masking - I will attempt the soft tape challenge next time I have my hands on some masking tape.👍🏻

Rule one - always spray in a clean room (definitely not my garage) ! Cheap tape is a pain but dust is a guaranteed quality killer. My spray gun is mostly unused but fortunately there is multiple uses for the compressor.

Hi All, had a little chuckle to Self as the 'Master' was Showing the 'Novice' (Ian) how to fold the Masking Tape. And Poor said novice was not only underpressure trying to get the Tape to fold, but the added issue of Camera Crew Giggling at his Attempts in the Background..! I have tried Folding Tape for such an Affect but was unaware of the use of 'Knee', so found it Very Frustrating. ( Piles of Unsuccessful tape everywhere..!!) But what a Great Tip, I do have a Few spots on my Car, Where I need to Feather out the Paint, just hope I remember this tip in the Better Weather..! As painting in Winter and Damp Conditions the paint Blooms terribly..! ( Yes we do get such Weather, even in Oz..!) Interesting Video Guys. Thank you for your Efforts..! Cheers all. Kim in OZ. 😎

Beware of anyone who says they can paint a car cheap, there are many days of boring preparation and labour is what costs money. Only way to get price down is to get it stripped and sanded yourself to save a couple of days labour but still painting a car should never cost hundreds
