I've been painting since 86 (not just a painter though- I do most handyman stuff) and I'm learning things from you. Thank you for taking the time to make your videos. Being a solo guy on most jobs i don't get many chances to watch others work and it's very helpful to learn and adapt from others.

+The Idaho Painter I'm the same as sedg above, I do lots of different jobs but work on my own so don't get the benefit of wisdom from collegues. Your videos are always extremely informative and clear in showing detailed step-by-step instructions. Could you possibly advise me on a hardwaring and scratch resistant clear finish to protect painted kitchen cabinet doors.Thanks again for all your great videos.

Your advice shave a hell of a lot of time off the project. It also made the end product neater when I removed the tape. Less cleaning at the end. I must say that you are very skilled as I couldn't apply the tape as quick as you do. Thanks for the great video.

Thanks for sharing your expertise---and appreciate your enthusiasm for a job well done! ;) Just got my house painted and I have to go back myself to cut along outside wood window molding and stucco. I realize that stucco is harder to cut, but he didn't even try to mask.--He just eyeballed it and the lines are not straight at all. And soooo I have to repaint the molding and then mask with tape and then touch the stucco up. Thanks again

That is crazy fast... i have been using sticky back plastic to cover the central parts of the windows.. large sheet rollls of stciky plastic. the sort kids use at school to cover books etc.. its real cheap and allows light through whilst working. Only one negative is that it takes longer to remove, paint flakes off it when you remove it so you need to have a vacuum cleaner at hand. I think your method is better for time and clean up. I will try it this week.

Hello there Idaho Painter I have a question. I need to paint my garage door which is going to be a lighter shade than what's on it now. What are the steps in painting it? Do I need to wash the door first ? Do I need to put a primer on first then paint it? Do I need to remove the garage door rubber trim around it or can I mask it off? Keep up the good work Thank You, Chris from California

Thank you so much for your knowledge and experience, I've been a painter for 22 years now myself and constantly am learning, I love your techniques, I do this also but I file my 5 way putty knife so I can mask and cut my tape to any angle, I let my co-workers know though to be really careful if they need to use my 5 in one since a few of mine are literally razors. I pre-tape on top of my masking if I have to fill in crookedness or voids so when I'm unmasking it lift's my separate tape for quicker removal. Sometimes on exteriors I'll pre-tape my vinyl Windows though, that way it'll be ready for trim if there's window trim, I'll then mask the glass and trim off for spraying, once I'm done spraying I'll peel the plastic off and now I have dry trim and the vinyl is pre-taped so I don't have to cut in to the edge of the vinyl, this especially works well if there's several people masking and trimming because not everyone can cut straight if need be and especially not the same crispness and straightness, it it's taped the same everyone's window trim will look consistent. Thank you so much for your expertise and experience. Sincerely Lorenzo gig harbor Washington.

Home Improvement How To's yeah that does happen sometimes I hear you. Unfortunately for us here in Arizona we really can't use tape because it will stick to the glass and become hell! So we'll just like take a five and one open it up on one side slip the paper in spray it soon as this pretty tact pull the paper out. I do like watching your videos seems like you have a good business. take care

Put the paper on first then tape. So your not taping twice. Goes a little faster and saves on material. This goes for any windows inside or out. Like a few other guys said, use a sharp putty knife to quickly rip each end with a nice edge. I learned that taping corners or new construction woodwork years ago. We use 1.5 inch intertape here in Minnesota. Its an all purpose tape for painters that has just a bit more adhesion than frog tape which is also very good but gets a little spendy. The sherwin tape is just too sticky for most projects. Hope that helps! I try to shoot tips to the guys on account I had to learn alot the hard way..

Yeah your right.!! Normally if you practice enough you can use the frog 🐸 tape or blue masking tape is pretty good and also cheaper than frog 🐸 tape. So you start with a roll of paper that covers the small window like he's doing. Leaving like half inch on each side. And then just use the tape to finish the masking

Hi, I design outdoor projects, More in the eco community, permaculture farm, homesteads, landscaping, swimming pools and natural ponds area. Are there any products in this arena that are more compostable or eco-friendly? I've seen people spray on those acrylic films but that seems like generating a lot of landfill waste. For a homeowner doing French doors they could just cut in with a brush but I've worked on paint crews and understand masking especially when you're spraying garage doors like this. Just keeping an eye out if you have found any best practices for environmental considerations? Always keeping a lookout for best products in that type of area. Thank you!

@redbone9368746
@redbone9368746 10 месяцев назад
The old tried n true way. Never fails lol only thing I would throw out there just for food for thought is this. In your exact situation, taping every window twice isn't a wallet burner, but say you got like 100 tiny windows to do. Having to use twice as much tape overall to complete the task is ultimately gonna cost you twice as much. The initial frog tape is nice cause you know you'll have that super strong seal all around, but if you tried putting the masking paper up first, and save a half inch gap on each side, that way all you gotta do left is tape the 3 remaining sides. Paper plus 3 strips of tape will double the speed compared to the 4 frog tape strips, then the paper and then 3 more strips of tape. I used your method for years until someone logically explained this other method to me. Now if time and money is not an issue then tape your heart out. But them brutal custom jobs to where every minute counts your gonna wanna go as fast as possible with the best end result. All it took was one older guy to scream at me like yo tape doesn't grow on trees! Stop double taping everything! Lmao to be even faster, I would just rip a piece of paper the length of the window a bunch of times and stick each one on every window just for pre preparation purposes. Then fall back, mask the paper perfect on each window and then fall back again and do the final 3 strips of tape and boom. Good to go. Painters always race each other on how fast they can do anything😂😂😂

pro tip: Cut up some strips of paper, it can be any old paper, but not as thin as newspaper... apply a thin layer of wood glue.. Wait until the wood glue is tacky. Not dry, but not wet. Tacky. After that... start taping like a pro!

Chris I have a question for you. A lot of professional documentation I have read says to leave a 1/16” reveal of the glass so that the paint bridges from the casing or trim work onto the glass to provide a weatherproof seal. Is this only done on the interior or exterior as well? Or do you just rely on existing glazing or caulking to satisfy this requirement. Thanks a bunch! I have been watching as many of your videos as I can, I am taking my license exam next month. I hope to eventually run a business just as yourself in the near future out in Northern California.

Have you tried liquid masking? We prepped the last couple houses with tape/paper and I'm wondering if liquid mask is a better option. The cost of the tape/paper adds up quickly on a high volume job and a single can of liquid mask can cover a ton of surface I believe haven't had experience with it but I think it could be a home run to mask wood or glass.
@garycooper3533
@garycooper3533 7 лет назад
I use liquid mask quite a bit, but mostly French doors and windows broken up by a lot of trim, it's probably not practical to use it on every window, but it is a great time saver
@renzo4296
@renzo4296 2 года назад
Yeah liquid masking does work well for a multitude of sash windows or a bunch of French doors, we've used it for those situations but like someone said, it's not practical in all scenarios, it's also a primer in one, it'll bond to previously painted surfaces and does stick to glass temporarily but when you're done you have to score the perimeter to remove the film cause it'll definitely be bridged and bonded.

What would be the disadvantages if the 3M Tape was used all the way?

paint scrapes off really easy from those windows.... if ytoure rolling the garage and cutting witha brush you really dont need to do this, even if you get a tiny amount or even a lot, you just get a scraper and when the paint is dry you scrape it off, wont scratch the windows or anything.... but obviously if youre a c ompletely beginner and you dont have a steady hand, or if youre spraying this door then yeah go ahead and cover those windows up, itll prob save you a lot mroe time then cleaning thew windows.

then you'd skip the paper for sure but taping edges is much faster than scraping. All those little sticky paint pieces get stuck somewhere else and pick them all up.

The tape on right hand side is very bad,at the top is away from the frame and somewhere down the middle of the side is over the frame/left side of the garge door window 🤔

Have you ever tried masking liquid? Just curious if this is a suitable application for a large residential house with all two tone French doors and windows around the house.

There is a thin line between frog tape and trim. Quality first! Then speed.. Remember... there is a thin line between them both. Practice.. Practice. Use the force. lol.. ...become the tape..

huntison yes, the trim is gapped away from the glass like usual on garage doors and the gap is inconsistent so it's hard to recess the tape back in there
