An easy project that's also very functional. A honey jar that closes up tight because just like people, ants love honey.

I am an amateur wood turner and a beekeeper friend asked to make some honey vases for his store. I made a conventional one with the additional honey stick and then I thought that it would be nice to incorporate it on the lid. So, I googled it and I was so disapointed to see that I am at least 5 yrs late. I thought of that just before go to bed and I woke up at roughly 4 am with this on my mind. I even thought of a name for "my idea". Thanks for the video though. Great piece of work and of course great idea... I will try to make it exclusively of wood, both the vase and the lid-honey-stick...

LOL, can't tell you how much I enjoyed your story and that very thing has happened to me as well. I made my dipper lid to fit a pint mason jar because a local bee keeper sells her honey in mason jars. It was a natural fit. Thanks for watching and thanks for your nice comments.

Love this idea and have made three. Let's just say that each one is a practice for the next. That is, plenty of mistakes. To remove the lid, I simply screw on the jar and pull it out. I've found in the past that mayo jar lids work quite well when doing homemade sauces etc., colour coded, so have been using those. One less thing to recycle and they work. I've learned MUCH from this one video. Thank you so much for posting.

Thanks for this video. I've made a number of these. I like to make the edge of the lid a little thinner, but I've also cracked a few doing this. I would also say it's a little more advanced than you suggest mainly because you really have to do all the steps in the right order, so some experience helps with that sequence planning.
@stevekrumanaker4582
@stevekrumanaker4582 3 года назад
I also normally make the edge a little thinner, usually less than 1/8", for the video I left it a little thicker. I still think it's a good video for a new turner to challenge themselves and it has been one of my more popular offerings. Thanks for letting me know you liked it and I appreciate your thoughts on it.

Love the dipper in the lid idea! reminds me of course of jars with a brush through the lid for keeping it moist with what ever it is in the jar! I should make me one of these, as we do eat a lot of honey in my house... Thank you for sharing Steve!

+Yuval Lahav Woodturning Hi Yuval, thanks for watching and commenting. You are right about the brush and I hadn't even thought of that. Maybe that influenced me as this percolated in my mind? I may do a short follow up on this video. There have been some comments here and on FB concerning cleaning so I may show how to make one that disassembles easily.

@stevekrumanaker4582 Год назад
Hi Chip, thanks for taking the time watch and especially for taking the time to comment. I would like to address your comment about the camera angle. I decided early on my channel would be more about ideas for things to turn and not so much to teach or illustrate technique. The reasoning behind that is that I feel there are others much better equipped and much more qualified to teach technique. I would recommend any video by Glenn Lucas or Cindy Drozda. Both are world class turners, both have great studios for video, and both are excellent teachers.

Post 1950's we pretty much lost the home canning / preserving interest over here with just a few short revivals. I was brought up that way and still do preserve what I can, but I'm not the norm. There are a couple of individual jar ranges but no standards...

But if things go as planned... I'll have at least a couple hundred pounds of honey next year above what my bees need... can you guess what a lot o folks are getting for Christmas next year?
