The argument that many more people should be riding bikes like this, rather than say less capable road bikes or underutilized gravel/cyclocross bikes is pretty sound. Not many people race road bikes, not many people ride aggressive gravel or go bike packing. But, a LOT of people want a fast, comfortable ride with the option to take on some easy gravel paths or connectors here and there... Nice bike!

I own a first generation Mason Definition which is the sportier aluminum frame. I went with the Definition because of the lighter frame weight paired with the savings in price. It's a 62cm frame with the Hunt 4 season alloy wheels (which have been great) and it weighs a tick over 19 pounds. While I love the bike and it has been a joy to ride, I'm always looking over my shoulder at that steel Resolution. There is just something about Mason bikes.

Looks like they did fix that stupid top tube cable route setup on the next version of the bike (Resolution 3 - has all 3 cables/hose going through the top tube, all the way to the destinations.)

Always strikes me as completely contradicting the point of internal routing when framebuilders then clutter up the seatstays with housing and cable ties. If you want internal routing, apart from all the aero claims (if you believe in them) you want it to look neat and clean. At least that's why I like it. Arguably, running it externally and only having two super thin and barely visible cables running along the downtube looks a lot cleaner than having stuff tied to my seat stays with cable ties. Really not worth the hassle on a bike that isn't super performance oriented to begin with.

As for the rear gear cable: some folks manage to feed it through the downtube and then the chainstay, through the port that is meant for the Di2 cable. Seems to work just fine and improves the look by miles!

This bike almost got me sold to buy if I had some extra cash lying around. It's exactly what I look for. A road bike. Don't really care too much about the weight. If it's light. A cherry on top. I like that it has mounts for fenders and would consider that gentle up slope top tube. Not those aggressive compact sloping top tube that I see these days. But I do my own bike up keep and that is what will not get my money. Comes darn close! Almost external cable routing at the front handle bar and stem at least and the stem and handle bar can be changed for comfort for another brand. None of the proprietary have to buy the company oem hidden cable full one piece hidden cable bar and stem system. For the real people.

so many if you are not this and that... sound like a compromised bike to me ... not the lightest, not to most comfortable, cable arrangement messy..... hmm...... 9kg with Campy SR?! ... 2kg frame.... you get a Hard tail and it is lighter ... oops
@SurpriseMeJT
@SurpriseMeJT 3 года назад
Agree. Those tubes are way, way too big for steel. You don't ride steel for the stiffness. You ride steel for the flex and comfort. That frame is super heavy. At that weight, one might as well ride an adventure frame.

Don’t know is the fork’s weight included in the frame’s weight, but for example Ritchey claim theirs steal frame weights 1500g. Sounds like a good alternative to this bike

The wheels are mis-matched to the frame. A handbuilt set of hoops would be more in keeping?

what do you think they were built by a robot?
@bjmaston
@bjmaston 3 года назад
What’s not addressed is: why did they build a steel bike with oversized tubes? A bizarre choice, but I presume there was a good reason for it?
@gaza4543

Its described as a multi-surface "all-road" machine it's not strictly just a road bike (the reviewer here doesn't really touch on it read the granfoundo review of it) and is fully intended to be ridden off the beaten path with light "gravel" (fire roads) use in mind ie a non-competitive CX machine, so the tubes are not only there for stiffness but strength
@overthetarget9401
@overthetarget9401 2 года назад
Since this frame is also equipped with mounts for fenders and bike racks to serve, if need be, as a travel/adventure bike with a bunch of extra stuff in the back and front the middle triangle has to be stiffer/stronger than it would be on a strict road bike otherwise the bike handling with the extra weight would be neither precise nor enjoyable.

All road bike = Touring bike
@gaza4543
@gaza4543 3 года назад
Not really no, I think of it as more a rebranded CX bike, this isn't really equipped to be a tourer at all, lacking many of the features a tourer would I feel be looking for. and even though its not an outright racer it's still very aggressive in its position.

@@gaza4543not true. The beauty of this bike is you Can set it up sporty or use it for light touring. I did a month long self supported trip on the resolution from Singapore into Thailand and its versatility stand out. I rode 35mm tires on it and it was still fast yet comfortable.

The bike is not light following the presenter. He also mentions it is not very comfortable. From the other design details (open cables, round, not aero tubing, shallow rims, wheels with many spokes, ...), the bike also looks slow. Tyre clearance is average for modern designs. So where is it better than any competition, what is its USP?
@gaza4543
@gaza4543 3 года назад
Go to the website and read up on it. The clue is in there tag line, “far fast” ie can be ridden all day without fatigue and relatively quickly, what’s not to get? Geometry means absolutely nothing until it’s compared to something else , is it more comfortable than carbon? Yes it is. is it fast for an endurance bike? Yes it is. Is clearance for a road bike good? Bloody awesome for a road bike! If you want more move up to the bokeh. What you fail to point out though is at the end is he points out there all nitpicks.

That frame weight is high. A custom made road bike with Columbus Spirit tubing should be closer to 1800 grams. Not sure why this is 400 grams heavier. My XCR bike is 1700 grams. I bet they are cheapening out and using a heavy, cheaper steel drop out and BB shell.

what a load of marketing bs - why would an everyday 2kg steel bike need 12 speed super record (~$5k AUD). some of these bike reviewers must be smoking crack...
@gaza4543
@gaza4543 3 года назад
Why not? why do we need any of the bikes on the market 99.9% of us don't race, we put out lives in danger to do XC and downhill. if you feel that way go to your nearest big box store and buy yourself a £$99 bike. job done don't look back stopwatch vids like this. However, i urge you to ride one before making sweeping statements. Building bikes properly is a real art and only a handful really know how to do it. There's a reason bikes from '70-'80s are highly sorted after and lusted over. Mason make no bold claim in my eyes. all they promise is comfort and if you want to buy some posh parts to go along with it then do so.

I don't see any advantage in having a lack of tire clearance. Imo, this is just a worse road and a worse Gravelbike which can't do anything well.
@milkbunnies
@milkbunnies 3 года назад
Have you ridden one... Probably not right? Having owned carbon, ti and aluminium bikes the Resolution is probably the most enjoyable bike I've ever ridden...
@CaptainShiny5000
@CaptainShiny5000 3 года назад
@@milkbunnies No, and it wouldn't make any sense whatsoever for me to own a bike like this. With my Checkpoint SL I occasionally ride along Mountainbikers on Flowtrails with 42c WTB Resolutes which works pretty well (and still pretty good on pavement) and I also ride Roadbike grouprides with 28c tires on a second wheelset which also works very well. Due to the lack of tire clearance two wheelsets on this thing wouldn't make much sense so you'd probably stick to the 35mm tires which make it a mediocre roadbike and a mediocre Gravelbike.
@milkbunnies
@milkbunnies 3 года назад
@@CaptainShiny5000 it's not meant to be a gravel bike it's an all road endurance bike as mason clearly state on their website. If you want that side of riding then choose their bokeh model, which like the Resolution has a raft of well documented reviews highlighting the quality of the bike and its ride attributes. But hey you seem to know better...

32-35mm tyres will get you appreciably further than 30mm can. If you want an all road bike rather than a pure road bike, why not buy one in the first place?
@andrewschietzsch5398
@andrewschietzsch5398 3 года назад
My road bike can only fit 25mm tires while this one can fit 35mm. That's a pretty significant difference. It wouldn't be ideal but you could fit 33mm treaded tires and take this CX racing.
