Massachusetts, New York on alert over mosquito-borne virus eastern equine encephalitis

State health officials in Massachusetts and New York are warning of a high risk of a fatal mosquito-borne disease being spread. The extremely rare eastern equine encephalitis, also known as Triple E, is spread from horses to people through infected mosquitoes. The CDC says there is no treatment or vaccine available. CBS News national correspondent Errol Barnett has more.

I actually fill up black buckets w water and throw in a mosquito DUNK and it attracts the mosquitos to lay their larvae, but the mosquito dunk kills the larvae without affecting fire flies or other desirable insects. This summer it really worked well. Last summer we were being eaten alive.

Reporter wasn’t real clear…the disease is in horses. Mosquitoes carry it from horses to humans. My husband is a survivor of invasive neurological WNV and is blind and unable to walk without assistive devices and has multiple other areas of deep brain damage. He is transplant recipient, the most vulnerable, and WNV put him in a coma for weeks with meningoencephalitis.

And the mosquitoes are horrible this year in New York. They are out very early in the day now. They have been spraying certain places but not where I am; next to a river.

Lock downs 2.0 knew it was coming , one human case in ma. and one horse. Stop it , just go about your daily life and take precautions were long clothing and use bug repellent. You don't need the Government to tell you to stay in your homes again !

I made a frog pond maybe 2 years ago and my mosquitoe population has negative in size about 2/3 of what it was about 4 years ago. I used to not be able to go into the woods without bug spray but now, since 2020 it's completely fine.

The mosquitos are really out of control this year, they're coming out all day not just in the evenings. We're seeing more than ever before in our backyard and they also get into the house. We have dogs so we're scared of using deet inside the house. I'm buying mosquito dunk today and putting a bucket outside.

Bug spray doesnt really help that much you just have to stay inside. Ive sprayed tons of repellent and still end up getting bit.

I myself would not depend on mosquito repellants, Mosquitos only the female stings, The males do not, Mosquitos are not attracted to a typical bug light, But every other Bug is, The Chemicals being dropped should be aimed at rivers and creeks that are in towns, This is where the mosquito populations are exploding, not really in your typical bird bath in your back yard but possible, I would advise all human beings and pet owners /lovers To be very mindful and wait 1 month for extended outdoor activity's, Also educate yourself on the internet, You just might save your own life, That is priceless, Good luck everyone!!

The secret is to religiously be inside by sunset. Insects are or want to be resting by sunset, If you are outside, then do not be hanging around needlessly or loitering, or doing outside work, and do not be under any stress or strain.
