God! I'd forgotten how gritty and real the cinematography was! It's like the movie is telling you "You *are* in the ass crack of south Texas in 1973 witnessing shit you were never meant to witness."
I always felt that what made the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre work was its grittiness. It has a true-life crime feel to it (especially with the opening text and narration), that puts you in the mindset that you're watching a reanactment of something that really happened (although it was losely based on Ed Gein).
@@AlandaParker One pretty freaking detail in this movie is that Sally actually got her finger cut _for real._ They apparently had trouble with getting some blood effects to work properly, and they were extremely tired of the whole situation since they had to wear the same clothes every day in the summer heat for continuity's sake, so they eventually were like "goddammit, let's just do it for real and get this over with". This has been confirmed by the "Leatherface" actor Gunnar Hansen in several interviews, and this would then imply that Grandpa was actually sucking real blood from the actress Marilyn Burns!
Well in the sequel there was an explanation that she got to the police station but after the interview she gone insane and died in an asylum soon after.
This is the first reaction where someone defends Franklyn. Yeah he's annoying but he's probably the smartest one there. The actor stayed in character the who time so everyone hated him.
Franklyn is probably the most interesting character of the victims. The fact that he's disabled is really interesting, the representation of disability in the film is something that makes it stand out compared to other slashers and i like how they portray the insane violent cannibals in contrast to someone like Franklyn whom is just a regular dude stuck in a wheelchair. I feel really bad for him. He gets his wrist slashed open and yet nobody bothers to help him up the stairs of the house or even pay any attention to him. Even his own sister wheels him face first into a chainsaw and immediately runs away to let him die. Poor bastard didn't deserve that, he was the only one with a working brain in the group but too bad his disability was just a hindrance to everyone (including himself when he finally meets his demise).
Fun fact: Marilyn Burns was such a slow runner that her costars had to improvise ways to not catch up to her, which is why The Hitchhiker zig-zags and Leatherface keeps sawing branches. It takes a couple of re-watches to piece it together but the family works like this: They're several generations of slaughterhouse workers put out of work by automation; they're partially inbred because of the isolation. The Cook lives alone with Grandma and Grandpa, so he's the weird uncle. The Hitchhiker is schizophrenic and Leatherface is his mentally challenged brother. Their parents and other relatives have moved away and left all the crazy siblings to live together in the old house in the middle of nowhere so they don't have to take care of them. The Hitchhiker was supposed to stay home with Leatherface but he fucked off to do necrophiliac shit in the graveyard so Leatherface was all alone when the kids showed up, and he freaked out and killed them to avoid getting in trouble for letting them in. He's got the mind of a child and doesn't understand the gravity of his actions, he just kills because he's been taught to do that. Notice how Leatherface changes his clothes and face depending on what job he's doing at home: wearing an apron and a woman's face to play mother in a house with no women.
Try watching this at 9 and having your older cousins tell you it's true and that he's "still alive and out there..." nightmares fueled. Someone in my family better come pay these therapy bills 😂
😏 Wait till she learns that this film---as well as several others---were inspired by an actual killer, Ed Gein. His story is nearly as terrifying and disturbing as anything you might find in fiction.
I'm really torn on this reaction. On the one hand, this is one of the most entertaining 30 mins I've had in a long time, but then again, poor Alanda got traumatized by this movie and I reckon we should be paying for therapy.

STOP. READING. lol i had to take breaks and ask myself, "Am i really gonna keep reading this?" And the answer was always a big sigh and a yes. The disturbing nature of the story isn't what stayed with me. It was the way Clive tells it. That's what kept me reading, and it's what will stay with me forever. He's amazing.
Most people’s perspective on the characters are flipped as far as Sally & Franklin. I love that you actually see them for who they are. Most people just think Franklin’s annoying, but he’s the only one that was actually paying attention to the red flags and as a final girl, Sally is the weakest because she ran headfirst into the chaos, but still somehow managed to survive. Fun fact: her maniacal laughter at the end was because shooting this movie was so grueling. There was a point where they thought they were done shooting, which was a relief to everyone, but they called Marilyn Burns (Sally) and were like “nvm, we’re not done yet” so that last scene was her basically having a fucking meltdown because of the entire process. Dead middle of august in the Texas heat, that house was full of actual animal carcasses, raw meat, and most definitely the smell of BO, rot, & god knows what else. I wanna say the dinner scene lasted like a full 24 hours or something and with the lights & all the extra bodies in the room, it was like 20 degrees hotter inside than it was outside. They literally had to go outside to cool down. Also, their wardrobes were never washed to keep up the continuity, so when they would break for lunch, no one would sit with the actor that played leather face because he smelled so bad. Also, the scene where they cut her finger, there was supposed to be a tube rigged up or something, but they couldn’t get it to work properly, so being frustrated and just wanting to get the scene going, the actor that played leather face actually just cut her finger. And that rag they put in her mouth was just a random dirty rag they found on the ground….Sally may be a weak final girl, but Marilyn definitely put in the fucking work for this movie. Just to get a paycheck that probably wasn’t worth her while. But honestly, the entire cast and crew had it rough. The financing for this movie was real wonky because they accidentally somehow got involved with the mob or something so they were scammed out of most of the money they would’ve made. Even if you don’t revisit the universe, I would definitely recommend researching the making of it. It’s so interesting. What I told you barely scratches the surface.
@@AlandaParker yeah, the entire process of making this movie was a doozy for sure 😅 but if you ever find yourself bored with a shit ton of spare time and even a little bit interested in learning more about it, there are like 3 different documentaries on RU-vid about it lol. There’s also a podcast called dead meat and they did an episode on TX chainsaw breaking down the meaning of it and all it’s subtext. It seems like a shallow movie, but the movie itself is the tip of the iceberg apparently 🤣
@@AlandaParker Another thing is they used an actual working Chainsaw when he was chasing her. If he tripped or something happened, well, it wouldn't be pretty. The making of this is very interesting. I saw one documentary and it just blew my mind. I saw all of these movie in October when I decided to watch one horror franchise each Halloween. This was one of the first since it was a blind spot for me. While I wouldn't saw to watch all of them, l think there are some worth seeing. Can't wait to see what other horror movies you react to.
This was one of many movies that finally discouraged people from picking up hitchhikers. Before these movies, people picked them up all the time. Most of them were harmless, but only takes one whacko. Just ask the victims of the I5 killer...
@@KCohere33 Because it was polite and honestly speaking it isn't as dangerous as you think. Yes there are some crazy people out there but of all the murders every year nearly all of them are from people the victim knew. So odds of you getting killed by a stranger are really low compared to you getting killed by a friend or family member or coworker. Criminologist David Wilson even says that serial killers only make up 1 percent of all the murder victims in the US. The rest are people that know each other.
I feel like that in turn does mildly help JUST how many runaway youths would also rely on hitch hiking. There's probably more victims from the hitchhiker side than the ride side, considering the power dynamics of taking someone into your car. There were a few serial killers who took advantage of it, since it was likely that the hitchhiker was unwanted/marginalized at home anyway. But seriously if you ran away from home as a hippie/60s youth rebel, you'd probably hitchhike until you ended up in a commune or Height and Ashbury. It probably made friends more than enemies but it kinda speaks to our lack of public transport that kids were like "Imma just hop into this stranger's car... Multiple times. Across the country"--just not a thought any of us would have anymore.
Yet another fun fact: the end scene where Sally gets in the back of the truck and gets driven away and starts to laugh maniacally, she wasn’t acting. She was actually laughing maniacally because she was relieved that that was her last day on set, because the conditions on set were so bad.
Also the actor who leatherface, the dance was improvised because he was dancing because it was final day. The director kept the dance in because he thought it was disturbing
You're probably the only person I've seen whose empathized with Franklin rather than calling him annoying I respect that since him acting out was understandable

Managing to be terrifying and disturbing with so little blood / gore, being gruesome in a totally different way - as John Carpenter said, it rode the edge of taste.
The subtlety of this movie made it soooooo much more traumatizing! There really isn't all that much blood. And much of the violence isn't shown directly. But the lack of sound track and fixed cameras angles just letting you sit in what just happened really gets under the skin....
Sally Hardesty might be the weakest final girl but she is so relatable. Everyone can have a same response like her if they are in the middle of danger.
Horror is meant to push our boundaries and make us uncomfortable, but this notion going around in the horror community that you NEED to traumatize yourself to "get it" is just harmful. In all seriousness, if you ever go into a movie unsure of how it will effect you or if at any point you feel like its too much, its more than okay to stop! Fear is a very personal emotion and entirely up to you to decide when enough is enough, and nothing is worth that sanctity. Take care!! I'm glad you're having fun with the series
The great thing about this movie (that came before Halloween) is that you never actually see the chainsaw cut anyone. The atmosphere, lack of traditional music, the acting, and sound do all the work.
This is exactly what I decided was so difficult for me as I was fighting to forget it before I fell asleep 😂. All of the things that mark a “scary ride” type of horror film experience are absent. It’s just naked trauma; as if you’re watching actual murders 🥴🥴🥴
I always loved that despite the fact that Sally is the most unlikable character in the movie, what happens to her is so twisted and her fear is so well communicated we root for her anyways. The only thing Sally and the audience have in common is that they want to live lmao. Makes for a very tense final 20 minutes.
i will say, that last shot of sally riding away in the back of the car is one of my favorite shots in horror cinema. just so iconic and apparently she was actually laughing maniacally because she was so relieved it was her last day on set because conditions were so bad. a beautiful shot in horror none the less.

There is not one single second in this movie that allows you to relax. It’s constant tension that rapidly descends into the best representation of a living nightmare ever committed to film. Every second is hot, smelly, dirty and massively uncomfortable. And the behind the scenes stuff has become legend. The entire cast and crew went through absolute hell.
"I would never want to get involved with somebody that looks that aimless. He's got time to fill..." Truth. Check out "Black Christmas" (1970s) and that will make you never want to have an attic. Another great reaction as always!

No one's been able to fictionalize the absolute horror show of that man's... Um... Craft projects. He was to the point of not just making a woman skin suit, he was basically making goth IKEA knick knacks out of bones and skin. Apolstering furniture with skin. Skull bowls. Just the list of the shit the police found always makes me go "Leatherface/Notman Bates/Buffalo Bill WISH they were as creatively diabolical as the real guy."

This was one of your best reactions because it's exactly the reaction everyone has who sees this movie for the first time -- a genuine "WTF did I just watch" feeling at the end, and a confused disgust. Some distance away from this movie you'll start to feel like a survivor and will appreciate it for being a movie that is both ahead of and a reflection of its times. I'll tell you though, this movie put me off meat for about a month and I haven't eaten at a roadside BBQ since. I just won't.
I became immune to it almost after watching it a couple more times, when I was younger. I started enjoying some of the absurd elements. (As weird as that might sound....)

Want to be really unsettled? This was real. All of it. No, the story itself is not real. "Leatherface" is not and never was a real person (though he's very heavily based on a very real person named Ed Gein who also made face masks out of skin), but all the props were real.. and I mean ALL the props. That was a real chainsaw the actor was swinging around, not a fake prop, and that is him ACTUALLY chasing the actor around at night with a real chainsaw. That in itself isn't the most messed up part though. The bones. Every single bone was real. Not just animal bones, but the human remains as well. The fact of the matter is, in 1974, it was actually CHEAPER to import REAL skeletons from india than it was to purchase realistic looking prop bones, which were hard to make and were very expensive as a result... so yeah, they had to make the set props like that coach and the lamp made out of human bones with REAL bones, and on top of that all the blood used in the film was also REAL blood they had been able to collect from a real local slaughter house. Because real pig blood was used to mark the walls and other parts of the set, that was one of the biggest contributing factors to the awful smell as the Texas heat got worse during the filming process. Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of those weird movies where the actual making of it was almost as horrifying as the movie itself...
Makes sense, he was inspired by Ed Gein. The guy who wanted to become his mother. Apparently the only non feminine face Bubba wore was when he was doing the actual massacre.

@berktheratt it actually wasn’t based on real events. It was loosely inspired Ed Gein digging up graves. But for the time period it came out, it was traumatizing. We are just too desensitized as a society nowadays
"Are gong to have to watch a whole cow slaughtering!?" That was exactly my thought on first watching this film, and I think that's why the film is so great... all through the film you're just on edge over what you might or might not see.
Fun Fact, when this film was released in 1974, The MPAA had initially given this film a G-rating. It was due to the fact that the film features no sex or nudity, no language, no drug or alcohol use, and no scenes of hardcore violence and gore. The film had been approved to be released to theatres with a G-rating but was recalled and given its R-rating due to the nature of the film. I'm currently in Graduate school at The University of Iowa. I'm earning my M.A in Strategic Communications and I'm writing my semester-long research paper on Horror movies that are based on true stories and the effect that it has on the audience. First time I’ve ever heard this story told that way. The way I heard from Tobe in an article I read is that HE wanted a PG rating but the studios felt with the tone of the movie, what actually happened is the film passed through requiring no edits which landed it an R rating, much to Hooper's disappointment, who was hoping the film would get a G rating (though I’d always heard it was PG). Could you imagine masses of 70s kids flocking to the theatre to see this? As someone who first saw this movie in their teens, that’s a horrifying thought. It disturbed me then and still unsettles me today.
The actual house used in the movie has been moved to Kingsland Tx near Marble Falls and is a restaurant now ! I see signs for it when we visit family down there, thanks
Oh hey I also wanted to add that Drayton (the gas station guy, the names of the family are revealed in the second part) is not Nubbins’ (the hitchhiker) and Bubba’s (“Leatherface” chainsaw dude) father but their much older brother. The three of them live with their grandpa and the corpse of the grandma. Oh and the hitchhiker has a twin brother, Robert “Chop Top” who was in Vietnam during the events of the first movie, he comes back in the sequel. This was great. I'm desensitized to horror, so it's awesome to see how impactful this film truly is. Just for funsies, if you WERE to rewatch it, you might see, this movie actually isn't gorey, like at all. It's mostly suggestive which again, shows why it's such a classic for still having that impact. Also, IF you were to say, feel brave and give the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2"(NOT the remake) a chance, it's a lot more light hearted and almost a comedy. More gorey but I promise you won't be as traumatized as from this one 😁
What's sad about seeing this again, as an adult...You know your childhood is officially dead when you see the inside of the sick family's house, and you're like, "Not for nothing, cathedral ceilings and that staircase, though..."

When you think about it, Leatherface was killing in self defense. A bunch of random people show up and enter his home. He was already mentally unstable to begin with so he really didn’t know what to do and was scared
Alanda, I have to say that, after 59 years of being on this planet, and being a full on Chainsaw fan for much of it, this is the first reaction I've seen that honestly surprised me. When Leatherface goes full on into poor Franklin, and you DOVE OUT OF THE WAY, girl, I just applauded. You just won a new fan. DOKTOR G'HUL APPROVES. Now, I know you had a bad reaction to this, but do you think, after a year, that you could manage to watch the sequel made by the same team, TCM 2, uncut? Also directed by Tobe Hooper? This was the second movie I saw at a theater. The week beforehand I went to see the adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer with my classmates. I told my older brother and he said he would take me to see a real movie. I was 7 years old.
Its the fact that franklin was forved onto this trip then cut then left alone several times and them chainsawed and people still think hes a jerk like no he was the only one there who didnt want to be there and was neglected by his sister

I would ABSOLUTELY LOVE to see your reaction to Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2...it's seriously one of the most insane films ever made, and has achieved cult status over the years. It's unlike ANYTHING you've ever seen before, and that's including the first movie. It is a DARK comedy/horror movie, unlike the first one.
I love this film. This is the most perfect horror film ever made, it is perfectly done. The kills are not excessively gory, Leatherface is absolutely terrifying without being superpowered or supernatural, the isolated setting seems abandoned and there is nowhere to really run to, the chainsaw is now an iconic weapon because of this film, the helplessness of the situation and the difficulty of escape makes the film horrifying. There is no 'happy' ending as Leatherface is never punished and probably claimed more victims after the film ends. It is an absolutely iconic film and is one of my favourite horrors of all time.

When I first watched this movie, I could not understand why these characters kept entering a stranger’s house. In what world would that sound like a good idea. Even if they had not stumbled upon a family of cannibals, they could have been shot for trespassing.
Fun fact about this movie, the reason Leatherface stops during the forest chase to start cutting down branches is because the actor playing him, in spite of his size, was so fast even through the woods and while carrying a real chainsaw, he was still catching up to Marilyn Burns (Sally). So he stopped to cut away at branches long enough for her to take the lead again.
“He’s wearing a soccer ball on his face” has to be my new favorite comment from a first time TCM watch. First saw this when I was 9 at a birthday party and it’s one of my most profound childhood memories
One of the thing I think also made this film seem so gruesome was that it was an incredibly difficult film shoot for everyone involved. The dinner scene in particular was filmed in the middle of summer in 100 degree weather for over 24 hours. Add to that the lights they had on set and the food and props spoiling in the heat, made it borderline torture. Pretty much everyone in that scene and the crew got sick filming that scene.
I loved your commentary. This is my favorite slasher movie, it took me several times to get past the photo snaps at the beginning as a teen and i couldn't bring myself to watch. I was so disturbed watching this in my 20s and have yet to watch the sequel. My mental stability is far more important 🤣

I had the same reaction about Franklin vs Sally like 20 something years ago when I first saw this in the 90s. I always felt bad for Franklin but all of my friends were annoyed by him - this is so refreshing to see that I'm not alone lol Top 5 horror for sure
