Massaging At Spa VS Massaging For Yourself (PROS and CONS)

Most Therapists will end up working for someone else instead of themselves. In case you're wondering what to do I wanted to highlight the ups and down of each, working for yourself or a spa location. I share some of my experiences and thoughts and hopefully can help you decide on which path you take.
I tried to keep the video shorter but that's hard when it comes to me and sharing info XD but either path you choose, becoming a Therapist is a great profession that provides a lot of help to many people!
PROS : 1:41 , 4:14 , 6:38 , 9:52
CONS : 2:33 , 3:11 , 5:49 , 7:32 , 8:43
SUMMARY : 10:40
NOTE** Not all locations are the same and my stories/experiences don't reflect companies, even of the same brand, as all things can be change by independent owners.

Working for others as an LMT can be great but to be honest the long hard painful learning lesson(s) of entrepreneurship is worth it 10x over being an employee as part of a business model or someone’s passive income.

Hey, great video! I used to work for a big massage company in the Netherlands and now I have my own little company in France. In my experience it was very difficult to work for this big company. We had long hours, few breaks and we were underpaid. Also, we were working with a group of mostly girls and I was having a hard time being kind of an outsider. The positive thing was that I gained experience and created a big group of my own clients, with this my confidence grew. I needed this to be able to start my own company. I love being my own boss, being responsable for every link in the chain. For me, this just makes it all more interesting. Proud to say my company is doing very well :). In short: I agree on everything you say :P. Thanks for the video!

Super helpful info, as always. Since getting my license in 2016, I have worked at a PT clinic (burned me out), mobile massage (which has proven too shady for me), and currently chiropractic clinic (not enough clients). I am trying to do as you say - improve my skill, while using that to build my private practice, but it has proven to be really difficult so far, namely because places have either overworked me, or there hasn't been enough clients. Would love to see you do a vid about how most MTs transition from working for someone else, to building their own private practice. I think that vid would really help out a lot of MTs (both new & experienced). Thanks again for giving back to the community so much, Spencer. You inspire me to do the same once I am more established/successful.

Its crazy the way some of these franchises work. They want all your time while they get all the money! Also im at a place that has cameras and can hear you talk so therapists watch what they say and make it difficult to get together. It would be nice for therapist to come together and figure out after graduating and make decent money and be respected for what we do. I see people come in one way and leave looking totally different from the great bodywork that they get! ☺ More respect, and worth our time and effort is "Gold!"

The spa I work for charges $95 for a 50 min massage. We receive a little less then a quarter of that. What is not right over all is we get classified in tiers. We are placed on the books in the order of the therapist who sells the most retail and down. The catch is, we are usually never in the front of the spa to do this. We have to mention 3 products to them and call these products up to the front by the phone and pray they purchase them. On top of that, the front desk worker who does not get paid on the tiers we do, can also sell the products and get the credit for. (They get a 10% commission as we do) so if they want to ‘steal’ your sell, they do. We report it and most the time it gets ignored. So if the front desk clerk dislikes you, or is greedy , your just out of luck. All this effects the way ur booked. Even if %99 of your clients rave about you when they check out, no matter how awesome you are as a therapist, you are placed on the books by the amount of retail you sell. What kind of business is this ? #@WTS International at its finest. Under paid over worked and definitely shows favoritism even if the therapist is mediocre.

Interesting video. I have never experienced a spa much for myself. I have only gotten 4 massages in my life. 2 in a spa in my hometown when I was 10, 1 in September when I was at college, and one in November at a spa in Syracuse. I'm glad that I could learn more about how things work in the massage therapy business. I hope to get another massage soon. It was great.

Hi! Really like your videos they are always so full of good advice. one thing though about the money you make as a self employee or as someone who works for a SPA. When you have your own business you also have to pay for all the expenses. The rent of the location, materials that will be used, heating bills ETC, so unfortunately all the money wont go in your own pocket.

I want add that working at a high end resort seeing vacationers makes better money than on your own or at a day spa. Resorts pay you hourly to be there so let’s say minimum wage in CA is $11.00 an hour then 20% commission on the cheapest massage of $120= $24.00 and tips range around $15- $35. On average. They provide every detail for you and you only deal with the W2 every year. An average of $55.00 an hour no room rent no utilities no advertising or selling. But lots of hustle. You do 3-7 50 min massages per day. That pays better than working for yourself unless you work out of your home.

What is the medium salary once you work at a spa or somewhere besides the chain spa’s like envy? Online it says 50 something thousands and is it true massage therapist only work 20 hrs which I assume is 3 days? And yet u can make 50 something thousand dollars on just working 3 days a week for a year?
@greatmindsthinkalike1378
@greatmindsthinkalike1378 5 лет назад
Nope not true. We were told in school you shouldnt do more than 5 a day...these plaves advertise bonuses, but they pay over time like 2 years or so. And to get more wages they want you to work F/T! So you have to figure out whats best for your body and time.

I’m sure you could make it happen. I have a leg length discrepancy which causes back pain and I am doing ok as a lmt. Self care is key. Pain will still come up though. I guess it depends on the amount of pain you are experiencing

II think the word Spa needs to be clarified. I have worked for ME (two different ones) for quite a while now. And at that company, I make 15-20 an hr depending on upgrades. The other spa I work at, that is independently owned, I make 42.5--55.00 an hr. So maybe change the word spa to chain or franchise. Maybe you did later in the video, I haven't finished it yet. I have been trying for some time now, to find a place where the business is consistent and the pay is fair. STill looking..... It's been years. I would never encourage someone to go into this business unless tthey have a back up plan or a lot of money tucked away. They don't tell you these things in school. I have no desire to do the work it takes to have my own business. THanks for the video!

I once went for a massage at a seemingly respectable place..the lady that came in to give me one wanted to give me a "happy ending"..She was a Chinese lady..when I completely refused her advances she assumed I didn't like her..and whistled loudly and a big burly guy tried to come in and give me a happy ending..I'm like WTF? Is this an acceptable practice in the field... I know many with similar stories?? How can you tell the difference in respectable and non-respectable?? What are the red flags??? :(
@HMMHarwood
@HMMHarwood 7 лет назад
Wooah definitely not acceptable! Us therapists make a HUGE attempt to separate the actual medical profession from the 'parlor' connotation, which is basically a whore-house with a 'massage' front. I've only seen outsides of these places but to avoid them be on the lookout for things that don't seem right: darkened windows, entrance in back, etc.
@MEXICANMOOSE1976
@MEXICANMOOSE1976 7 лет назад
Yeah..this place didn't even have these telltale signs.. but it could have been a one-off type a place...or just didn't care what types of services it offered!!! But yeah..dark windows...back doors and perhaps overly private massage rooms I'm thinking?? Thanks Spencer!! Take care!!!
