He has the perfect voice and the perfect look for this role. I am french, and I can tell you his prononciation is good. Of course, I can tell he's not french, because of his little accent, but I can understand every word. And I cannot imagine how hard it must be to sing in french for non native speakers. In my opinion, it's way harder than German because of these damn vowels.
Though I generally don't like him as a singer, I must admit, he meets my imagination of how Werther looks like just perfectly. And speaking of French, the German sound system is surprisingly close to French, and the only things absent in german is the sound in the beginning of "oui" and nasal vowels

Da brividi e da pelle d'oca!!! Jonas è meraviglioso per la sua vocalità in funzione espressiva-interpretativa!!! Jonas mette a fuoco il lato drammatico del personaggio, malinconico ,disperato,infelice , a causa del suo amore non realizzabile per per la giovane Carlotta ,vittima di un matrimonio di convenienza!!!!
Werther en personne ! Incroyable interprétation,merveilleuse musicalité,impossible de faire plus beau. Et,pour ceux qui critiquent sa prononciation,je dirai simplement que j’adore son petit accent et que je le remercie de le chanter en français,ce qui est terriblement difficile pour un artiste étranger. En plus,il a une excellente diction puisqu’on comprend tout ce qu’il dit ! Comment critiquer un artiste doté d’une telle musicalité et d’une telle sensibilité,avec une voix aussi belle ? Vraiment je ne comprends pas.
Je n'ai pas eu l'occasion de lire ces critiques auxquelles vous faites allusion....mais suis tout à fait d'accord avec vous pour reconnaître l'immense talent de cet interprète qu'est Jonas Kaufmann !...
J'aime beaucoup Kaufmann dans d'autres registres mais à mon sens ce rôle-là n'était pas pour lui. Dire par ailleurs que son défaut de prononciation est négligeable et donne même un certain charme à son interprétation me semble un peu abusif : avoir ainsi le sentiment qu'un chanteur d'opéra ne saisit pas le sens de qu'il chante, la portée des mots qu'il prononce, c'est quand même un peu gênant, ne trouvez-vous pas !? Bref, encore une fois j'aime beaucoup la voix de Kaufmann mais pas pour ce Werther de Massenet, lequel, rappelons-le à d'autres commentateurs... n'était pas vraiment allemand.
le frisson d'émotions multiples.. même si les permiers 'é' de réveiller sont un sourds pour le français, quelle maîtrise dans les expressions. Tout y est à mon sens. Mon plus fort souvenir c'était le Grand Alfredo en live à Garnier lors de l'incendie du Licéo. rigueur de intonnation, romantisme des couleurs, poésie dans les pianissimi sur le timbre, le désespoir du 'pourquoi'...! Jonas s'approprie le rôle et le transcende. Il est éblouissant d'intelligence, d'élégance et de respect musical
@@Mariano-ge6de Son incontables los tenores que han interpretado Werther. La lista es larga. Algunos ejemplos: Domingo, Carreras, Corelli, Pavarotti, Vargas, Kraus, Di Stefano, Alagna, Tagliavini, etc.......
@@lifeisgood3087 Pavarotti nunca interpretó la ópera completa. Para mí Kraus, Thill, Gedda han sido las referencias en este papel. Kaufmann es un tenor con un canto de gola forzado que me duele al escuchar.
@@Mariano-ge6de Estoy en desacuerdo totalmente. Kaufmann no es engolado. Lo confundes con su timbre, tessitura y color de heldentenor. Kaufmann es cualquier cosa menos engolado.
I too was at the recital. This aria was a highlight of the evening !! (I had heard it also a few days prior of the Met broadcast of Werther, and was equally mesmerized.) Bravo!
eragonevb shows how many people truly misunderstand the voice and GREAT opera singers. Not a different age in singing but a COMPLETELY different approach. Some won't agree because they don't have the knowledge or understanding of vocal sounds and functions of the past greats. Speech therapy has am destroyed great singing. You can hear it in any genre.
Not sure why people are carping about Kaufmann. He is a great artist and whether you like his vocal technique or not, he is simply transcendent in this role. Trying to compare lyric tenors with spintos is not an apples to apples comparison. If you prefer lyric tenors in this role, that's all well and good but the spinto voices will always have a different sound and approach.
Qué gusto y qué placer da, con todo lo que se critica a Kaufmann, ver que mantiene esa bendita E en el agudo del "réveiller". Muy pocos se molestan en hacerlo, incluso se lo hemos tenido que soportar algún que otro súper famoso tenor elevado a los altares. Eso dice mucho de este hombre y por eso me suena tan bien cuando canta. A pesar de ser tan distintos, tanto Kaufmann como Kraus son mis favoritos para este aria a pesar de que no pueden ser más opuestos vocalmente. Por supuesto solo es mi humilde opinión.
It really doesn't get much better than this.Great voice, emotion and his French so good, hardto believe he is German One of the greatest tenors past or present.
Brilliant aria and fantastically sung! I saw him onstage as Werther in New York. At 2:15 listen to Massenet’s extraordinary orchestration - the octaves start in the high strings, then go down down down to the double basses to illustrate Werther’s descending soul. Miraculous.
C’est un moment unique et merci de le partager. Le regard de « Charlotte » et son émotion ajoutent aussi à la beauté tragique de ce moment. Dommage que l’opéra Werther ne soit d’une telle intensité d’un bout à l’autre. Pas un fan de Massenet, personnellement.

This man doesn't sell out the world's greatest opera houses because he sounds as though he's suffering from serious constipation. How many opera houses have you sold out? And how many people pay a crap-ton of money to fly across the world simply to hear your sweet angelic voice?

@@akedem I agree absolutley with you. Kaufmann is a baritone indeed and when he tries to sing high notes( from G 3(4)) he look likes sufferinf from a very serious constipation!!
To be a great Werther, a tenor must somehow be charismatic yet detached, vocally impassioned yet ethereal. Mr. Kaufmann is ideal in the role. He sings with dark colorings, melting warmth, virile intensity and powerful top notes. There is a trademark dusky covering to his sound that lends a veiled quality to Mr. Kaufmann’s Werther and suits the psychology of the character. True, his "dusky" tone is appealing for this and other characters. But, look, if a tenor can't caress THE top phrase in Werther eem once---pianissimo---I don't, can't, shan't believe them. :-/
