Scored some 20' long underground AC lines right on time for the new shop. This is the first time I came across something like this and it was a lot of work but I think worth it. Hopefully I will get some more one day. Let me know if you have a better way I have some left.

Well who ever came up with the comment saying WORK SMARTER NOT HARDER must've been watching your videos, cause I've heard that for some time now and haven't been watching your videos longer than I've heard that, but you sure do work smarter and not harder. This was a great video, can't wait for part 2

Weld and sharpen a piece of flat plate to the power hammer attachment you made and it will smash the pvc off as you scrape the pipe. You could also set the depth on a circular saw make your four cuts and she should peel like a banana while you scrape. 👍 Channels awesome buddy I’ve definitely learned some new tricks

Someone else said steel wire brush, they make those for trimmers too... those new high power 80v battery ones are pretty good, but I still like those Redmax 29cc commercial trimmers, they rip and would make short work of a lot of jobs if you make a mounting plate for various blades and discs, or those wire wheels bolt right up to the stock hub.

Make use of the pipe bender as a chuck and rotate the pipe as in a lathe, fix up a sliding knife on a six foot section and turn the insulation off as you would in a wood lathe, that way you could cut precisely to the surface of the pipe and minimise waste.

I would build a roller assembly an your ten ft table (motorized) to roll the sections for you while you run the tools, back in the day I'd probably have used a weed Wacker edger I converted with a custom hub that held 7" cutoff wheels, 7" metal saw blades, those Lennox Max diamond metal wheels would work great, especially if you had the pipes turning somehow. That tool obviously wasn't very safe, but I used it in the field salvaging properties and contents for 10 years, as well as at my little scrap business.

I was thinking something along the lines of a lathe, either metal or wood, wouldn't really matter. That way you can also keep the job spinning for a final pass with your paddle grinder. The problem is also that you'd also need to buy a lathe which is just more expense and I doubt it could be justified if you aren't doing these sorts of pipes at least semi regularly. Just my thoughts.

I was thinking you could streamline the process by making a round jig with an ID just larger than the Copper pipe OD, then weld on a few blades on the outside, maybe stabilised by another outer ring that would allow the OD of the complete pipe to enter inside it. Then you could force the pipe through this jig, much in the same way a Log Splitter works. That would take off the plastic pipe and insulation in one pass, then you would only need to give it a quick blast with the flap wheel afterwards. You may need to cut the pipe in to shorter lengths to do this, but you are cutting it afterwards anyway in your current method. Waaay to late to try now, but maybe next time?
@excitedbox5705

Obviously, it’s worth whatever people are willing to pay, but finding buyers for used copper pipe isn’t always as easy at it might seem. Even new pipe, sometimes i have a hard time. Gotta find that right person who needs the right length, willing to use ised pipe, and be low enough price to entice. Fug it - like he says in the comments, he prob doesnt have the time to sit on it, waiting for either buyer or seller to find each other. #1 copper pipe goes for about $3.90-4.00/lb right now, where im at. That would be a good haul, seems like…

Could you cut 2 sides then use the hammer drill to take the rest off? Just a thought that may help save time
@ProjectShopFl

I don't think It would have the power. I broke both bits I made when the insulation was to thick. That stuff is really tough! I liked the hammer better than the saw I was using but they kept breaking off the chipping hammer bit. must be the vibration or the different types of metal.

@@ProjectShopFl yeah dang. That is super frustrating. Any luck with heat? Throw the oxy torchdown the middle? May give off too many fumes though.

New subscriber. Anyone who is in Florida gets my attention. I lived n Siesta key while I went to school at USF for chemical engineering. I am changing careersand starting a machine shop/mobile welding and fabrication business. I can't wait to come back down to Florida!! Last time I was there we swam across the Manatee river.....snakes and gators..... Can that stuff be dissolved in acetone or some other type of solvent. It might help immensely.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'm trying to stay away from chemicals. Good luck on the machine shop, I am setting one up myself. Stay tuned for a shop tour.

probably would be a good idea to catch the copper dust flying off while using the flap wheel.

I have been using a leaf blower to blow the insulation off and collect as much from the floor as possible, mainly from the cut off saw.

all that asbestos being pumped outside .or i may be wrong but old ac pipes the insulation around them contained asbestos.

They were new pipes and it was spray foam not asbestos

I knew a wire wheel would be the way to go! Less material loss then flap disks and disks prolly were burning up quick. But somewhere there is an AC guy dying watching this. I knew some guys that would retrofit cast iron to copper for huge water chiller ac systems. Like the ones for PBG mall. They even may have liked them insulated.
@ProjectShopFl

Wire wheel was definitely faster and lasted longer. These pipes were for a AC system. lol

Why did you stop using the chisel though it be better than the saw
@ProjectShopFl
@ProjectShopFl 2 года назад
Yes It cleaned more and faster but the blade kept cracking and breaking off and not just on my welds. I think the vibration on the mild steel had something to do with it. I might try something else with the chipper
