I'm super excited to revisit this project at the botanical gardens in Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve! It took 2 million pounds of stone to create this massive 1-acre pond and 60-foot long waterfall!
Watch the video series of this pond build:

That really was a fun project to watch being built and I appreciate you checking back to give us an update. It looks phenomenal! I am a little surprised though that the water is not as clear as I would have expected, especially with that much water flow and circulation. Great project!

You know what would be a cool subject for a video from you Ed? How do you guys "make" the bacteria that you sell? Or the manufacturer/breeder of that stuff. I always wondered! Is it just a large pond? Is it some sort of breeding house? What are the techniques and difficulties in doing it? How does the manufacturer decide what bacteria to breed and add to the product? etc etc. I think that would be super interesting!

Question for the professor... how long do you have to let a dead pine tree sit before you can safely add it to an ecosystem pond that you eventually want to have coi in? Or any fish really i guess... or is it just all together a no for in the pond
@EdThePondProfessor
@EdThePondProfessor 3 года назад
Great question! I typically don’t use pine because it decays quickly, Cedar and Cypress are the best and I’ll use a lot of Oak too. With that being said you can use those species immediately after being cutdown or harvested

@bradshantz2272 3 года назад
Hi ed! Question for you, why didn't you run a pipe into the water for the discharge pipe at the top
@EdThePondProfessor
@EdThePondProfessor 3 года назад
Great question! The waterfall doesn’t run continuously, when the pump is turned off and there’s a pipe running into the upper pooling area the water would siphon back down through the piping by gravity, this would cause the pump impeller to spin backwards. This is not good for the pump when it happens on a routine basis. The “Air Gap” between the pipe discharge point and the upper pool will prevent this

@EdThePondProfessor 3 года назад
I know!!! We’ve been struggling with a drought and intense heat for the past two weeks and the pond became murky...... Biological filtration is effective but it will fluctuate throughout the year, It will go back to being clear after we get some rain......
@Eric.Mercado

It’s a beautiful pond🥰 I only have one objection the pipe on the top of the waterfall looks kinda tacky. 🤷‍♀️ It should of been hidden by a rock or something so you can’t see the pipe. A natural waterfall wouldn’t have a pipe on top. 🤷‍♀️ You did a beautiful job with everything else though. I love the red bridge 🥰
@EdThePondProfessor

I agree! The pipe is not visible to visitors/viewers I walked to the top of the waterfall to show it from a construction standpoint, It’s actually completely hidden from view

If I'm being honest, this is bordering giving me "unattractive smelly swampy pond" vibes. The worst water quality I've ever seen come from ya'll. Not sure if it was disappointment, confusion, or concern heard in your voice throughout the video, especially when you first showed the pond. A 2 month heat drought was your explanation behin everything and time, rain, and cooler temperatures were your recommended resolution. 🤔Did things things improve for them? I'm in Arizona, so does that mean my water would always look like that due to our regular heat droughts we stay in? Did you really think that was the problem or was it an under preforming filtration design? Perhaps the customer's abundance of fish is too much for the system...all that fish food and fish waste?
@EdThePondProfessor
@EdThePondProfessor 2 года назад
Very perceptive…… It’s actually doing great now, I think I caught it in between cycles, Working with nature is always a challenge with a lot of changing factors. I’d be lying if I said it’s always perfect because it’s not! It takes some basic maintenance and it needs to be setup properly in the beginning. Even a simple patch of Turf Grass can turn into a nightmare of not taken care of properly…….
@Eric.Mercado
@Eric.Mercado 2 года назад
@@EdThePondProfessor Agreed. But turf don't cost 1/3rd of what a project that size goes for. Lol. Thanks for the reply buddy. 👍 Glad to hear everything is working & looking the way they should now for the customer. Beautiful feature.
