Back in Roswell NM my dad taught us to harvest a watermelon and leave it in a cold water well for hours. OMG on a hot Roswell day, that ice-cold watermelon was the best I ever ate.
As a boy, 50 years ago in Northeast Tennessee, we had Watermelon suppers, after the evening church service. What a wonderful time everyone had eating locally grow watermelons, grown along the Nolichuckey River.🖋
Grew watermelons in South Texas for forty years, me personally l love the oversize fruit for the simple reason, the bigger the sweeter, but our buyers claim that 18 - 20 pounders are the consumers demand at the supermarket. Our farm average was around 200 acres per season plus another 100 of fall melons.(very difficult to grow on account of disease). Good luck with your oversize fruit they are very beautiful. Retired farmer from South Texas.
I love the “real” watermelons. All I ever find are the little seedless that really are not that good. People that have never had a farm melon do not know what they are missing. We use to grow black diamonds. They were huge! The orange meated were the best. Seeded melons are so much better. Thank you.
Seedless watermelons are delicious if home grown. Like anything else needing shipped they often get picked to early or when it’s wet causing low sugar content.
You really did an awsome job with your vacation time, like the say "You reap what you sow" and you did an excellent job! Thanks for sharing and update us on your next harvest. The person who mentioned selling them for $5 each; where I live they sell for $7 and it's only 1/3 the size with seeds compared to yours. Awsome!
From South Georgia and been in Atlanta for 30 years! That field makes me homesick from childhood melon fields and watching grandfather harvesting 🍉! Painful watching you eat it!
Actually, that only one of 3 methods to determine melon ripeness. The other two are: 2) a pale yellow underbelly 3) a hollow sound when thumped in the center (this one requires practice) Keep in mind that melons in the market don't come with tendrils.
Try this one for number four. First set melon up and down just like it grew in the field place the middle digit of your middle finger over the blossom end now press in with the tip of your middle finger. This is how buyers for large grocers do it. By the way I can't make it work either but its how they do it. Lol!
Wow, It was amazing. Love growing watermelon in my farm in Sri Lanka. By the way, is it possible for me to obtain some seeds, as what we have in Sri Lanka seems to be much smaller? Thank you.
I agree on the taste of watermelon with seeds. That was all that used to be available, and they were always delicious! I hardly ever see them for sale anymore. Always see the watery, no flavor, seedless variety
I'm 54 now but when I was a kid my grandpa would get a watermellon on his way home from work on friday...my mom and her 5 sister's ,2 brothers and their families would gather at grandpa and grandma Armstrong for lunch each Sunday after church.......the watermellon was always the satr of the show ....Grandpa could always pick a winner ......thank you so much for reminding me of those good day's ........I appreciate it more than words can express.....
I bought melons that big from local grower last summer. They were so sweet and good. I sat down and ate a half of one at one time. I was so stuffed. God it was great.
My Mom's dying wish was for watermelon and she didn't get any unfortunately... I've ate 14 watermelons for her since 6/11/21 to "eat one for her".... she's eating ones just like in your video in heaven!!!
That was a massively beautiful patch of melons and those are the ones we used to harvest back in the day. And I agree Jubilee's are THE BEST melon for all those awesome qualities of any melon.
The way you was sounding while you were eating that big piece of watermelon made my mouth water. I could hear the moisture. I love this juicy fruit. Tasty and profitable what a great combination. Peace and good health always.
I am so impressed! Even though I can see it’s obviously very large, it’s still heavy for its size which is another great indicator of an awesome melon. Wow. You must be proud of this, I sure would be!
Man, what an inspirational video. My family bought a watermelon from the store and i was looking at the seads. I got the bright idea to sow some of the seeds , in one mound. If it takes off , ill grow a patch next year.
Stallion where will you get seeds, most of watermelons are seedless nowadays. Seedless anything is going against Gods Word. Wake up people and smell the coffee. Man thinks he can better Gods creation.
I did the math in my head, was going make a comment similar to yours.. I'm here because I wanna get into the watermelon business.. and it's a cash business.. take that money and dump it straight into a whole life insurance policy
Great video Brett, I grew up in NC on a tobacco farm, and we would have 1 to 2 acres of watermelon each year. That was always an unspoken challenge among the farms there ,who could grow the largest and I have seen and eaten the harts out of a few myself. post more videos if you grow anymore. Thanks
This is really lovely. I'm realizing that this is two years ago is that's why I can't even ask you for a piece . I have learned how to know when watermelons are ready for reaping. Thanks for info.
I was smiling from ear to ear when u cut that open. Can you share what you did for fertilizing and watering??? We need your insights. How long from planting to harvest. What state are you in. Thanks so much
Thanks Bill. It was a tasty watermelon. I fertilized with I think triple 12 or triple 16 that year. Any balanced fertilizer like that will work. Just follow the label for the rates. Watering was everyday, and that variety was about 95 days from planting to harvest, in Washington state.
1st - jealous of your land! Man how awesome it would be! Thats a nice profit from your vacation and I much rather play in my garden than go to Hawaii too 😉👍🏼
Jubilee watermelons are a great watermelon. Sugar content ,color and texture, one big Jubilee will give you both seedless and seed fruit in the same melon is what I tell my customers. The big heart will be seedless and the rest of the fruit will have seed. The only problem with large Jubilees is most people can not handle such a large melon and do not have room for it in the fridge. But they are a really great melon. You did a great job growing you melons and it is great in seeing someone take pride in doing so.
I'm so proud of you!!! Incredible. I too take vacations like you.....lawn chair is in garden and I watch the drip tape like I'm sitting at a beach looking at ocean haha. I planted Jubilee watermelons this year and IM SOOOOOOO thankful for you video.
@@melonking1 I doubt I will be watermelon Queen like you watermelon King but I planted 12 plants here in Arkansas....sooooooo maybe they will produce 10,000.hahahahaha (I know I'm delusional but I can dream.lol)
Brett, what about plastic mulch, drip irrigation, fertilization, foliar fertilization, and funguicides? You did a great choice to spent your free time! I'm doing the same but planting moringa trees in north Mexico. Thank you for your information!
I can eat a whole watermelon per day. The Walmart kind that are as you said 15lbs. This is inspirational. I’m going to plant this at my 10 acre fruit farm in between the trees
Hi Brett nice to meet with you trough RU-vid, you … cutting and tasting your super size gorgeous watermelon made me wanting to jump into your farm and share the other half with you, pity I would have to go back in time .Regards from Toronto. I love watermelons❤️
Brett Hoffman : Thanks Brett for your amazing video on growing the best and biggest Jubilee seeded watermelons , with a gargantuan solid pink fleshed super sweet 55 pound beauty !!!
I grew up in a small little town called Indiantown, Florida. The Beaches grew some of the finest big watermelons 🍉 I’ve ever seen or ate the hearts out of. You did a great job!
I am going to be growing watermelons this spring and summer to donate to our local homeless shelter and food bank. I have been having such a rough time finding consistent info on growing and harvesting. I hope my melons are half as good as yours.
Here in West Ky. the tendril's dried up a month before the Jubilee melons were ready. I had to wait until they got bumpy skin and a yellow belly. They were perfect in taste and sweetness.
Those giants used to be the watermelon of choice 20 yrs. ago here where I live in the south. Now all you can find is the round small ones & maybe a mid sized one even at the farmer's market. Some of the new ones are pretty tasty if you catch them right,, but I do wish we still had the choice of getting a really large striper when you want it. Ha,, regardless,, it's on my shopping list to grab one next time I hit the store. I always cave to the power of suggestion & that 55 pounder did the trick!
I realize that I'm 5 years late in my response, so please forgive me. I am located in Texas, in the DFW area. I need to know the soil type, fertilizers etc., you use. Thanks Brett!
Wow!That is a great watermelon.Look like the watermelons that my father grow in the country. It brings back some memories many years ago.I lived in the country, and loved to walk through the watermelon field and find the biggest watermelon.Wow they tasted so good.Keep up the good work!!
Brett you reminded me when I grew watermelons and I sold them off the back of my pickup great to see such enthusiasm , "GOOD ON YA MATE FROM AUSTRALIA"
Thanks for posting the video. You got me beat for sure. One thing missing from your vid is where your from. I grow melons in Michigan and the growing season is much shorter than say Georgia. Last year I planted around 15 plants first time, and was astounded at the growth of some of those plants. One particular plant had 13 melons, and like yours were at least 15 feet in circumference. Of all the garden my biggest melon was 38 pounds. This year I set a goal of 40lbs. I hit 41lbs this week with plenty more to ripen. I planted Allsweet (biggest) and a few Jubilees. Jubilees so far not as big as the Allsweets, but haven't matured fully yet. Anyway, the reason I'm writing is your comment saying "I don't know what I'm going to do with the rest of this melon". Dude here's what you do....juice some melons! Let me tell you watermelon juice is almost better, tastier, and easier than eating the melon. Not only that, watermelon juice is packed with vitamins and minerals too numerous to list here. I use a Breville Centrifugal juicer (recommended). From a 55 pound melon you will get at least 3 gallons of juice. After juicing I then put the juice in half gallon ball jars and freeze. I fill my freezer full of these Jars a drink watermelon juice year round. By the way I believe freezing actually makes the juice even more flavorful than freshly juiced. I have given up drinking pop completely for a full year. That can only be better for ones health for sure! Enjoy!
Most customers; myself included; who shop at Walmart can't pickup a 55 pound watermelon. My Walmart store doesn't sell anything larger than a large basketball sized watermelon because most of the customers are senior citizens. To buy watermelons the size you harvested you have to go to a farmer's market where they sell 55 pound watermelons.
It looks like you're growing seedless watermelons in your later videos. Just wondering why you switched? Was it a yield issue, or sales? Or was it for another reason?
Be careful eating watermelon! It’s real easy to over eat it and you will be too full to move!! Awesome video! Wish all watermelons would be this great!
Nice melons! Plenty of those things grown in GA. They're top of the line but I'll take a Crimson myself if they're available. Long as they have seeds they're all good........
