This is Part 1 of 3. The other two parts include gameplay and my final impression.
I am an old-school board gamer. I grew up playing HeroQuest and Warhammer Quest. Memories of playing these dungeon crawl games always make me laugh. Massive Darkness 2 is the sequel to the original dungeon crawl game of the same name by CMON. I wanted to make this video because context matters. I want to ensure that the reason I like something is clear, and hopefully, that will help you decide if you like that same something as well. I think that this game is great for those who are looking to go back to playing the simple dice chucking dungeon crawl games of the mid-'90s.

I never expected MD2 to be similar to Warhammer Quest, but League of Dungeoneers may be exactly what you're looking for! I'm 3D printing models everyday in anticipation of it

I remember seeing that on KS a couple months ago. I backed Massive Darkness 2 because it was compatible with all the original Massive Darkness stuff and Zombicide stuff. As a D&D player, I mostly went into Massive Darkness for the miniatures. The original was not all that great, so I backed the second on the same idea. Get a bunch of mini's and if the game is good, that is a bonus. This time around the game was better and I view it as a bonus. I mostly made the comparison to Hero Quest and Warhammer Quest because they both feature random loot and random door spawns. In regards to Warhammer Quest, I mainly enjoy that Massive Darkness 2 is a system that lets you get extra mileage out of your existing material. Much like how Warhammer Quest let you get extra mileage out of your Warhammer armies. This massive catch all system is what makes it similar to Hero Quest and Warhammer Quest. I never wanted to give the impression that I was saying this game is better than Warhammer Quest. Warhammer Quest is still great.

Same here. I read on many people that legue of dungeoneers is almost exactly like warhammer quest. I am 3D printing monies for it. Although the standees look amazing.

I'm still waiting for my Bling All in Massive Darkness 2 to arrive, but like you I've got the original MD and accessories , all ins on both fantasy Zombicides KSers. I know my group loves dungeon crawlers and I love to paint minis so it was a no brainer for me. Worst case scenario and we get bored of MD2, I get to use all the minis for D&D, so win win. Cant wait for your gameplay videos.

Thank you a lot for the honest review. I think the same, it is hard to review something that you play different as other people do. It happens to me with Zombicide Black Plague, i play with mostly all expansions and homemade rules that complicates the game itself. Most of my friends that played the way I do loved the game,. But, when they say that want to buy it... I always try do be honest that they will need all the expansions and make some changes to the basic rules. So yeah, for me is one of my top 10 best games but only if I play it the way I do. Surely, If I only have the basic Box game and basic rules I would give a score 6 of 10 instead of 10/10 to the game. Greetings from Spain!!

As a non-KDM player (at this point), the YT algorithms have pushed me your way a few times. So with that in mind, eh, I say don't knock your content or style. Heck, I first saw this video on a device that was hard to comment on and I thought your thoughts were worth finding this again so I could comment. Massive Darkness 2, to me, isn't really a Warhammer Quest (and I have had a cherished copy with expansions for decades). Not really. That said, while mechanically very different, they do both a great job of offering adventure in a box (or pile of boxes). If you want a direct parallel to WHQuest though, Shadows of Brimstone (or its sister product Forbidden Fortress) is where to look. The theme shifts from orcs and ratmen to weird west and mythical Japan (both with a portal system that can take you and your imagination *anywhere* except orcs and ratmen). Besides that, the game is pretty much spot on for a modernized WHQuest95 (charts, modularity, RPG, and all). I liked MD1, but I was willing to house rule the heck out of it to refine the rough edges. MD2 does that so much better out of the box. MD2, to me, is a video game played with cards, cardboard, and plastic. It is part Diablo, part rogue-like, and part mobile mini game with a massive set of content to drive randomness (if you have that wall of boxes, which I do too). It can be played in a zero to hero one off, or in a campaign that takes a long weekend to a few weeks (rather than months to years as most modern campaign games do). This earns it a solid spot as a board game option if you don't have a dedicated group that may not still be there to resume 5 months after the start. On a similar note, I think Townsfolk Tussle has a key value. TT is a solid game in itself which is fairly, but also potentially wrongly, compared to KDM. It is the version that is contained enough to play if you don't have months to years of a dedicated group. Have a dedicated group, then have at KDM or SoB, or WHQ. If you only have a group for an annual meet up, a limited weekend game session, or just a pallet cleanser between or alongside the very long games, or just not enough time for yet another 100+ hour campaign game, then MD2 or TT are both outstanding choices. IMO.

I agree 100% with everything you said here. I have not played Shadows over Brimstone, but I have played Townsfolk Tussle. Townsfolk Tussle is a great game that shares most of KDM's game mechanics and card layouts. I agree that Townsfolk Tussle is not a direct KDM comparison. For me personally, Townsfolk Tussle is more likely a direct competitor for Arcadia Quest when it comes to my groups game sessions. Have not played Arcadia Quest since I got TT. The comparison I was mostly trying to make was that, much like Hero Quest and Warhammer Quest, I have no real interest in playing the core game alone. I love the options and the massive sandbox the game provides. I agree with you that Massive Darkness 2 is a good enough game that you can have fun tossing everything in and just having fun playing with all the toys. Much better than the original Massive Darkness. I also enjoy the zero to hero, Diablo like-loot system, quick dungeon crawl this game provides. I recently saw Tom from the Dice Tower review this game, I also agree with what he said. I mainly just wanted to share that for those gamers, those who love the massive homebrew communities that keep games fun for years. Mordheim, Hero Quest, Warhammer Quest, and Heroscape. Games like those, for those gamers, this game might appeal to those homebrew designers just as much. If word got out, if this reached those communities, I could see this game being on that list in a couple years. This is a game ripe for the Arcadia Quest treatment from CMON. Small two week kickstarters, like Riders was. Small expansions expanding this game slowly like Battle Lore did. I think that is the type of players this game needs to reach. Reviewing the game as a stand alone thing, not trying to speak to those player, I think would have done a disservice to this game. That is why I wanted to do this unconventional review. Also, AWESOME AND SO LUCKY, I have Warhammer Quest, but never got to get those expansions. Nice find!

I mentioned the game was fine at 3 minutes in. It is a serviceable dungeon-crawl board game. It is a "My Thoughts" video, intended for those who backed the game intending to use it as a system. Everything else after that was me adding context to why I backed the game, knowing that the first one was not great. Acceptable risk for someone who was more interested in a game system than the board game itself. Adding context to different ways of looking at a game like this.

Why the hell are you talking about Hero Quest for so fucking long?
@BraMithra

These are my thoughts on this game from the perspective of a player who enjoys "system" games. Warhammer and Hero Quest are "old-school system" games, where the point was to sell a basic core system base game, then expand upon it via books and modules. Kingdom Death Monster is a newer game rooted in this older thinking. These older games have very passionate homebrew communities that extend the game's life for years. Heroscape and Mordheim are examples of the company stopping support of the core system, then fans making content to work in the base system. This game fits in that mold. It is a shame that the game is far better when you access the large amounts of modularity from other games. Hero and Warhammer Quest did this same exact thing, they had books and compatibility modules to allow you to use all your Games Workshop products in the core system. Some players are far more interested in board game when it offers a system, rather than a rigged rule set that offers little compatibility. This is a game where you can very easily toss together a stat block and create something new for the game. I talk about these older games in this video because this is a game those passionate homebrew community can find and enjoy.
