The way the ship sank is similar to the way the Daniel J Morrell (or the Danny J as I so elegantly call her) in November of 1966. Its also 100% similar to how another freighter called the Michipicoten split in half on her way to be scrapped. There's actually photos of this sinking

Very similar, just like the Carl D. Bradley as well. Those old Lakers built in the early 40s didn't hold up well in extreme cold and heavy storms

What you experienced actually happened. On November 29, 1966, the Daniel J. Morrell broke apart during a storm on Lake Huron. It was night, too. There was only one survivor. The back half of the ship, where the engine was like on this ship, continued on for about 5 miles before it sank.

That's actually something that used to happen to old freighters. When they ride rough seas, the inconsistent stress on the hull causes them to break like that. Happened plenty back in the day.
@dave3682
@dave3682 4 года назад
Yep, back at the turn of the century the ships on the Great Lakes were starting to break the 600-foot mark, they were the largest freighters in the world at the time. Unfortunately, they were too big for their own good. The problem was that the steel technology at the time was not up to the task of supporting such a large ship and was too brittle. Waves on the Great Lakes are very different from waves on the ocean. On the lakes, waves build up steeper and closer together, though not as large as ocean waves, while on the ocean waves are further apart and not quite as steep, more like swells. This means that on the lakes, since the waves are so close together, a large enough ship can be suspended momentarily between two waves. The stress on the hull when this happens is unbelievable, and eventually the hull will break. After all these 600' ships started sinking in inclement weather the engineers managed to figure out what was happening. They then started to build ships with flexible steel, so that the ships would bend with the waves. This gave rise to the saying "If they don't bend, they break." I work on the Lakers, and it really is incredible watching them in rough seas. You stand at the stern and watch the bow spring up and down like a diving board, or go down into the tunnel and watch the lights dance on the walls. Its scary as hell, but again, that's what they're built to do. If you're curious the ships ive worked on are the Dorothy Ann Pathfinder, Edgar B Speer, Paul R Tregurtha, and Joseph L Block.

There’s also a submarine that I’ve been inside and there’s a big gun on the deck. I’ve also been to a big cruiser the Little Rock and slept in it. There were big heavy metal doors and we ate inside the boats cafeteria. On the wiki page near the bottom it show a room with missile racks. I went in that room and it was cool. There was also a WW2 exhibit in one of the room of the boat and there was a lot of American and German helmets. There was a Ww2 telephone, helmet, and gun. This video reminded me of these boats.

in real life if you put this ship through the waves you did, she would have had a good chance of splitting in 2. The pre-1948 freighters were found to have been made of some weaker steel and that was fatal to the Carl D Bradley and Daniel J Morrell. Of course the Fitz also sank, but she was built of stronger steel post 1948, which just tells you how bad the storm of November 1975 was.

I was the officer in charge onboard the Irvin when we made the historic move to the shipyard back in 2018 for a dry dock period. My focus was to ensure we didn't sink this in real life! The ship is a museum in Duluth, Minnesota and let me tell you, Mighty M. did a perfect job recreating this ship accurately. Here's a link to the video of our sailors working on and moving the actual William A. Irvin. Enjoy. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-f4IcXhELqzI.html&ab_channel=TWINPORTSDIVISION-U.S.NAVYCADETS

That was intense. I have a fear of deep water and when ever I see and underwater scene in a film I involuntarily hold my breath, I have to force myself to breath, so yeah that was quite scary.

The Irvin is a great ship and this model is super detailed and exactly like the real ship. Fun fact the Irvin was one of 4 ships 1. William a Irvin 2. Governor Miller 3. Ralph H. Watson and 4 John Hulst. Back in their day they were some of the biggest. They were also owned by USS the company who owns the Arthur M. Anderson. The ship closest to the Edmund Fitzgerald when she sunk.

fun fact: This scenario actually happened. Two ships, the fort Mercer and the Pendleton both split in half in the same storm. It would later become the largest coast guard rescue at the time.

Also two instances of bulk carriers in the great lakes, the Edmund Fitzgerald "The Mighty Fitz" and the Carl D Bradley "The Queen of the Lake" that both snapped in half in Winter storms. It resulted in the loss of almost everyone on board the Carl D. and the Fitz had no survivors.

Everyone says this ship is like the Edmund Fitzgerald but this is almost exactly how the Daniel J. Morrell sank. The Morrell sank on Lake Huron in 1966 and unfortunately is not nearly as known as the Fitz. That ship also had 29 men on it but only one man survived out of the four men that initially survived when climbing into a lifeboat.

Honestly detail and full interiors make even smaller ships seem big. Take the RMS Olypmus and RMS atlantic that you reviewed a few months ago. Both were around the same size, but the Oceanus seemed A LOT bigger because of it's detail.

I actually live right next to Duluth where this this is docked, it’s around 800 ft long but the biggest that come into port at Duluth can be up to 1,200 feet, you should see if there is a Paul r tregurtha model, that’s one of the “thousand footers” that still goes through today.

Build in 1933 launch in 1938 due to the great depression. In 1978 it retired sold for scrap. In 1981 city of Duluth Minnesota purchased the William A.Irvin for a floating museum ship. So if going to Minnesota go to Duluth to do a self tour of the irvin and also watch ships.
