Massive King Salmon Caught Bar Fishing

Chinook Salmon are also known in the USA as King Salmon, when they reach excess of 30 lbs some people refer to them as Tyee. Chinook salmon are unique in several ways.
They are they largest of all five species of Pacific Salmon and have been known to reach sizes in excess of 100 lbs. The world record in the Skeena River Water shed is 99 lbs caught on a rod and reel.
Chinook salmon preserve their genetic pool by spreading it out over time rather than numbers. Specimen from the same hatch out year may return each year up to ten years. In other words you may have a 1 year fish from the year before spawning with a 10 year fish from 9 years before. This way if one years run encounters a dramatically reduced survival rate due to any number of causes the genetic pool will remain somewhat in tact.
However, this does not make this species immune to extinction. Although they are incredible creature they are still ver vulnerable to going the way of the dinosaurs at the hands of humans. The population today isn't even a shadow of what it once was.
We need to care for these animals with a heightened sense of responsibility because they are vital to a healthy functioning coastal ecosystem.

There is NOTHING like the angst of fighting a huge fish. The pure gut wrenching terror as every second of the fight passes, feeling the tugs and pulls wondering if something is coming loose, is it gone? It's amazing, wonderful, stressful, exhilarating, and terrifying all at the same time. And once you feel it your hooked just as good as any deeply hooked fish. Nothing in the world matters but the fight. It brings together total strangers and instantly bonds them like family. There really is nothing else in the world like it. LOVE FISHING.

This is why we fish. This is the moment you strive so hard for. That one last cast, one more drift, it all boils down to an instance just like this. It's what memories are made of. The highest highs and the lowest lows of fishing can't be explained, you feel it inside you. It's amazing when you can share it with friends and complete strangers. Great video.

YOU LIE LIKE A BITCH ABOUT HER BLEEDING. YOU NETTED HER AND FLUNG HER ASS ON THE DECK WITH NO INTENTION OF POSSIBLE PRESERVATION. THEN, YOU 'TRUMP UP' THE LIE AND THINK COLLABORATION WILL SELL IT. NOT TO A CRITICAL EYE, ESPECIALLY ONE WITH MANY DECADES FISHING. BIG FISH, EH, BIG FISH, WELL

Great video, great job netting Quinn!!! Glad to see you finally have it right!! I took Captain Quinn fishing as a wee lad of 12 years old back in the day. I remember thinking what a keener he was for his age, but then I could identify with that passion myself from a young boy as well. We were fishing for rainbows in Horseshoe Lake east of Powell River. Camped with a group of 3 families at Nanton Lake, I knew if no one wanted to come with me, Quinn would step up every time. Sure enough, no one wanted to leave the comfort of the camp, but, up stood Quinn, a boyish grin on his face, he quietly says " I'll go with you".... It was a coolish summer day, high overcast day, nothing special, just your typical BC day. The evening before , we had sat around the campfire having a great time, when Jeff, a friend of Mokie's ( Quinn's mom), said he would roast a slug on a wiener stick and eat it!!! That livened up the chatter as a few started to gag immediately. But, everyone was determined to make him liv up to it. As we all know, BC is known for it's big, juicy slugs, so it wasn't hard to find the victim in the underbrush. With the slug well secured on the weenie stick, Jeff proceeded to roast it as we watched it ooze, bubble and boil, with howls of ewww, gross and laughter coming from the kids and adults about to watch this unbelievable event. After a five minute cooking session, Jeff deemed the slug cooked to well done and proceeded to take this lump of ooze of the weeny stick to even greater howls coming from the camp members. I decided to stand at the edge of the firepit area in case I woofed my cookies as Jeff proceeded to work up the courage to complete his grotesque promise to eat this 4 inch lump of ooze that no longer resembled a slug, After a few attempts but then backing off, the kids ridicule of cowardness got to him and he popped it in his mouth. He started chewing and for a brief minute, much to our amazement, it looked like he was going to pull it of. Now we are at the swallowing part and as he musters up enough spit to slide it down the hatch, he gagged! The slug ooze was glueing his cheeks together and prevented the slug from sliding. To bad we didn't have cell phones with cameras back then to capture this epic fail! But, for all who witnessed it, we will never forget that event... Meanwhile, earlier in the day Quinn and yours truly boated thru the channel from Nanton Lake to Horseshoe. On our second pass thru the hot spot my rod started to sing at a high pitch, indicating a larger fish than normal. After a 5 minute struggle we saw a glimpse of the rainbow, wow, biggest trout I;d ever seen personally. Quinn went for the net as I was trying to get this monster to within netting distance. Finally tired enough to bring close to the boat, I realize how truly big this fish is and how really small my net is! Quinn dips the net below the fish and as he lifts up to capture it, I realize it's not even half way in the net as it;s to big for this pan fry net and as it starts to wriggle and flop, it gets out of the net and spits the flatfish lure. WELL, I have never seen such big eyes on a young boy and a look of total devastation as I did on Captain Quinn that day. Through all the excitement and adrenalin, I would say it was a 7-8 lb rainbow, but we'll never really know. Over the years I have often teased the Capt, about how he owes me a big trout. But, truth be told, the look and memory of Quinn's expression on his face, it's a trade off because both were epic..... Thanks for the awesome memory Quinn........ Fish on! Merle

Best fishing video I have ever seen. You guys nailed the whole scene, good mates, beautiful scenery, strangers who are now friends, the entire video captures perfectly why us salmon fishers do what we do. I live in Ireland and fish in the US and Canada almost every year and the scene is the same. Good friends, good times and making good memories. Tight lines brothers!!

We live 20 minutes north of Duck Mountain Provincial Park these days with many more species of fish here. This time, I'll do the netting, lol......

Hi I have a question. How do you land a salmon on the river edge without hauling it up onto the rocks? Sometimes we have had to do this and not sure if this is bad 'fishing etiquette' to do that. if we walk up to the fish and try to grab them while still in the water they just get away. Just wondering because this is how I was taught and recently I had someone give negative feedback on the way I fish. Obviously I'm not a professional and won't ever claim to be but I didn't realize I was doing anything wrong..... We fish for spring, sockey and pinks and get steelheads back asap.. all rules/regs are followed and fish we don't keep go back fast whether we pull them on the rocks or not. Would like your opinion on this? As i said this is how I was taught and it's very difficult to walk into the water and try to grab the fish while it's still in the water and able to jet away so we walk backwards while reeling the last bit and let them come up on the rocks then run and grab them. Thanks

You want real huge kings, larger ones 50-75 lbs? Alaska kenai river and saltwater kings off Kodiak island. By the way, the world record sport caught king is from the kenai, 97 lbs! Largest ever caught commercial was from southeast Alaska in the mid 1920’s approx 126 lbs, in a fish trap commercial set up.

here in michigan we got some big fish this year Last night we boated this master angler level behemoth several miles off the NW Michigan coastline. He tipped the official harbor scales at 33.5 lbs even after dehydrating on the deck of the boat for quite some time, as the fish was far too large to cram into the livewell. It's measurements were 40.5" x 28"
