Episode 1- I think one of the biggest changes you can make to any garage is to upgrade the lighting. For the VinWiki Garage, we've gone with a combination the OG 4 Bulb and 6 Bulb LED light fixtures and some LED Can Fixtures which are all set to 5000k. With the fresh coat of paint and the new lights, this garage will look legit when we're all done.

This was an amazing step in the transformation. I never knew what a difference lighting could make to the feel of the garage. Matt certainly knows what he is doing.

Drastic improvement. I have six of these 4 bulb fixtures in my shop/home gym and will probably add 3 more at some point. This is the kind of content I love. The car detailing stuff is cool, but this is where it's at for me. Keep the Matt and Mike projects coming!

A real improvement I changed my kitchen light to LED and was shocked just how much it changed the quality of vision in there I had in the past a double 6ft fluorescent but that triggered my daughters epilepsy so I tried 8 gu10 spotlights but they never lasted a month, then I had the LED no problems with the daughter, my mother saw mine and purchased 2 5ft led's for her kitchen.

Started watching the VinWiki garage playlist as i'm planning to redo my garage so this gives some good idea's ! I live in Belgium though i bet shipping would cost a ton to get those overhere

About two months ago, six 28 year old 4'fluorescent lights were upgraded(or so i thought)with two rows of 8'led on the side I detail on... one row of 8' went on the other side. I may have to pull the two rows and order a few 4/6 bulbs from You as I am not happy.

for recessed or flush mount look into the flat tile replacement Led tiles for drop ceilings . I've been playing with putting Pixel tape in them but now i'm going ot put the normal white only ones all in my shop and garage

What did you do with the ground wire that is supposed to go to the green screw in the fixture?

"KO" for knockouts and use of plastic bushings. This is why you go with someone who knows what they are doing with electrical.

Luis Gonzalez They were Commercial Electric 5”-6” led retro-fit with switchable kelvin rating 2700k-5000k. They aren’t bad for the money.

Hey man, not sure if it's a RU-vid processing issue or something with the mic, there's a nasty buzzing behind the audio I keep hearing in this series. I thought it was my mixer when I watched the into video, but it's still here watching this episode. Might just be something to take a look at, doesn't detract, just distracts. :)

Looks good. Is there a reason you’re doing LED tubes and not just flat panels?

LED troffers that are higher quality light output tend to be much softer and have less light dispersion. That is a good thing for the harshness of the light, but it also means we need a lot of them to achieve a proper result. I haven't chased this super hard yet, but I would like to have troffer, can retrofit, and other solutions as well.

Obsessed Garage makes sense. I think you can find a manufacturer for reasonable prices now. I know we can find optically identical fixtures for commercial lay-in ceilings now but they’re higher price still. Great work on Ed’s place!

Ken Bode The method I used took about 2 min per. It was really easy and for some of them I needed longer wire.

I know you mention you recommend flat for the walls, but do you recommend the ceiling being flat as well or something else?

I don't think it matters quite as much, but yes, I do that flat as well.

Looks like PRIMELIGHTS fixtures. I bought and installed them in my garage too. They were NOT even as bright as the builder grade HOME DEPOT fixture I had in there before. Total disappointment. They DO NOT come close to the LUX spec they advertise at all. I did a side by side comparison and the LUX was half that what I had before. I still have one and was able to get T8 LED bulbs in 6500K. It helps. But, still not as bright (Light Index) but better color like I had with my fluorescent ALTO and Realla bulbs.

Our new home is about done being built with a 1300 square ft garage and I'm planning out the project. I can't tell from the video but does anyone know if Matt typically paints the ceiling in Habor Gray as well? Or is the ceiling typically done in white and just the walls in Habor Gray? I was originally thinking of doing the ceiling and walls gray, but wondering if that will be too much gray. I can't recall hearing him specifically talk about the ceiling color.

Matt, do you know approximately how many footcandles of light there are in the main garage with the new LED's?

I'm not quite sure, but I think it's around 110-120 lm/ft2. It would be interested to get a light meter and test it. It's definitely bright and outside the range of normal recommendations.

Wait...does fixtures don't sit flat on the ceiling? I like the amount of light... BUT, the fixtures, the way they look.? I don’t know. Not liking the way they look in that really nice garage.... too commercial if You ask me... would have just changed out to LED CANS. But i do watch all your videos... since way back when it was just you and your camera.

The look really good in person for what they are. Without dropping the entire drywall ceiling, we don't have much choice otherwise. LED can retrofit would not offer nearly enough output or dispersion.

They are grounded the frame of the fixture.

I’m surprised that local electrical code allows you to extend the wires from the can Without a ground? Most code I’m familiar with requires a hardwired ground run from the house wiring to the “final fixture “ . Our local inspectors would issue a fail as the old can and the new fixture may not be touching? Beyond that the new lighting looks great.
