This comment is so comically ass backwards I almost think its bait, but unfortunately this bullshit is regurgitated so often it probably isnt't. The sport was originally called football when students at the University of Cambride ("common folk" lmfao) invented it. When the masses decided to adopt it, the first organisation with an established ruleset was the "football association", from that the term association football was shortened to soccer.

Colloquially, "Rugby Football" was shortened to simply "Rugby", and as soccer caught on as a sport, the "assoc" slang was colloquially changed to "Soccer" to help differentiate it as its own sport. It was primarily referred to as soccer at this point. When the sport was spread from Britain to other countries, the English did so by calling it soccer. It was AFTER soccer had already become an internationally popular sport that the UK started referring to it as simply "Football". The shortened term "Football" has only been the primary name of the sport in the UK for a little over 40 years, whereas it had previously spent more than 100 years being called "Soccer." To be clear, though, there was never a time in UK history prior to around the late 20th century where the single term "Football" referred exclusively to Soccer and not also to other sports like Rugby.
