In this episode of Field Trips: West Coast, I've made it to Oregon to fish the Columbia River for Chinook salmon, but I bite off WAY more than I expected when I hook into the biggest fish of my entire life on light salmon gear. Watch as I do battle for over 2 hours with the largest freshwater fish on the continent.
After the catch, one of us flips our kayak into the frigid waters of the Columbia.

It's obvious, you are living the life God intended for you. Amazing how you catch these fish that you are targeting. That was awesome. When I saw that hookset the smile drained from my face as I thought there was no way in heck you were ever going to touch that fish. I couldn't stop thinking about your paddle fish video and how hard it was to keep them hooked. Great job on finessing that huge fish in with that light tackle. Well, light for a monster sturgeon.

Back in the 70's my Dad and I were catfishing on the Sacramento river by ReoVista when I watched a guy in an 18 foot Bow Ryder hook a Sturgeon that was better than half the size of his boat. He pulled his anchor and let the fish toe that boat 2 to 3 hundred yards down river only to turn around and toe him back against the current..... But that telephone pole with fins kept going another 300 yards up stream, only to turn again and toe him back down river again❗😎❗ That fish made 4 full laps of that track of about 600 yards of river with an out going tide for over 2 and a half hours..... He didn't even try to get the fish into the boat.... He just ran his anchor line through it's mouth and tied it off to a front cleat and tied the tail to the back cleat like Spencer Tracy in the "Old Man and the Sea" and I kid you not that fish was better than 1/2 the length of his boat, 10 or 12 feet long and a 12 to 18 inch girth❗😱❗ He was eating sturgeon steaks for a year, and not a bone in the fish❗😜👍

My new favorite video from you Robert, just awesome. I've had some epic surprises like this when out kayak fishing. I love going out catching musky, pike, catfish, bass from my kayak. But a sturgeon from my kayak would be one of my top 3 bucket list species. Can't wait for the next episode, keep up the awesome work Robert :)

Hahaha the fish grips were not the ideal tool for the job, those Boca grips spin freely so when she started death-rolling, I might've been able to hold on. But at the end of the day I didn't want her to live her life with those grips in her, so I released them and let her go. What an amazing animal. Thanks for watching!

You know, the funny thing is that they get 20 feet. Sturgeon get to be around 200-300 years old, and the size of small whales! My great grandfather used to hook them on iron grappling hooks through rotten turkey roasts, and tied them to teams of horses to pull them in, since they got strong enough to pull a man in off the beach!

Check this one out brother, I was fishing with my favorite guide on the Klammath River roughly five miles up from the mouth. What happened that day will always be burned Into brain. Boondoggling roe on a G.Loomis rod and ten pound line a fish bent me over to where the tip of the rod went under instantly, at that moment I'm thinking like forty plus pound king,not so. After a fifteen minute fight a Klammath River Green Sturgeon that was every bit of nine but it was most likely ten foot, these fish are so protected you can't touch them or can you bring there head,or any part for that matter out of the water. Good times and keep receiving!.

Got caught between incoming and outgoing swells against the cliffs at La Boufadora just south of Ensenada, BC Mexico. Flipped my Scupper Pro loosin $800 worth of Shimano reels. Always leashed my gear after that

Yep, good practice for sure. I've flipped numerous times, but never in freshwater. That river is nuts though, wind surfing capital of the world and I learned why. 40+ mph gusts at the end there
