The red notes are scale notes, the yellow notes are chord tones. The yellow notes are the best notes to create a melody with. Use the red notes to connect. It takes lots of practice! Read the description for more info
hey, this is a great track, but with my limited theory knowledge I'm a little confused! if we are using A dorian then the key is G major right? if Am is the i chord, then the #6 of dorian wouldn't be diatonic
A Dorian is RELATIVE to G major, in the same way that G major and E minor are relative. The tonal center in this case is clearly revolving around A minor. Dorian is a minor mode, so we would usually say that it is in A minor.
If you were to transcribe this into musical notation, you might opt for the signature of G major, or the key signature of a minor (no key signature). There are many choices, and music theory is often not an exact science, don’t get frustrated!
