From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

While serving in the Navy during the 1980’s this simulation was exactly like what happened every time we sailed past Vietnam. The USSR at that time had a huge bomber wing stationed in Vietnam and would launch their bombers on a simulated attack at the USS Midway battle group. In turn the Midway launched F-18’s. Cruiser would have been 100+ miles from the USS Midway towards the known threat.

This reminded me of the naval battle in the book Red Storm Rising. As I remember it, Russians used a fleet of Bears to launch cruise missles at a US carrier group. The US took out the first wave, pretty much like here, but the russians had a follow up wave of newer, better, missles that crippled the carrier as defences were being reloaded and rearmed. I think you had more Bears though. Good shit man.
@eddiecharles6457
@eddiecharles6457 2 года назад
How so? In the book, the soviets used the Bears as decoys and the Backfires attacked from multiple points of the compass. Most importantly the Tomcats did not follow the missiles into the defensive missile screen of the carrier battle group. It was not done here. Still, this was an interesting video to watch.

You should read Red Storm Rising, by Tom Clancy (one of his older books). It has a sequence following pretty much this scenario, except the Russians start by launching drones from old Tu-16 bombers with transponders and accompanying jamming to simulate an incoming Backfire bomber raid. This draws off all the air cover and their their Phoenixes, and also soaks up some of the SAMs. The real Backfires then come in from another direction and volley Kingfish cruise missiles, scoring three hits on the carrier and sinking some other ships. Incidentally, the whole war scenario is kicked off by some dudes destroying a major oil refinery in Russia.

Yes. In reality the battle group would defintely have gone to full speed evasive at the moment of launch. At that time those AS-4 Kitchens would only have had an approximation of where the group would be, only hoping the 'enchillada' would still be in the narrow basket of their terminal radar-guided targeting. Between moment of launch and the 'Kitchen' going hot, the carrier would have moved about 3nm, with the battle group's ECM systems burning hot enough to turn seagulls into fried chicken mid-flight.

A bit of math here....: The Americans launched a total of 115 missiles, 71 Russian aircraft got shot down, which (assuming that every missile was a killshot) leaves us with 44 missiles left do deal with the 390 incoming Kh-65.... That means, that (if the bombers didn't get shot down before launch) at LEAST 346 Russian missiles went through the fighter barricade.... nothing but luck that only two ships were sunk

Kh-65's range is in excess of 500 km. Aegis detection range is 250+ km. Hence: - American sailors were too busy watching porn, - Bear crew got carried away while fortifying themselves with 80-proof, and forgot the lsunch distance was 500 km, not 50. An overall Pyrrhic victory for the reds as their military budget is dwarfed by Americas far beyond the near 2:1 financial cost. Also the fact the carrier wasn’t even damaged let alone mission killed meant that really the red mission was a strategic failure. Could do one with supersonic Russian bombers like TU-22M3? Also when was the Russian bomber fleet detected? In reality the carrier would have an awacs up and presumably sport a large formation like that over 200 miles away! The desperate scrambling with the Russians ~80 miles away seems closer than it would be……..

Bruh, mad props to both you and Manscaped for Testicular Cancer Awareness Month. I am a survivor of Testicular Cancer, so I can tell you that awareness and early detection (which are _always_ key in any Cancer fight) are especially important in defending against Testicular Cancer. Men should know that there is a natural barrier between the right and left testicles, so that even cancer, which usually begins in one testicle, cannot cross it. A man's chances at survival approach 100% _if the cancer is detected before it enters stage 2!_ After stage 2, Testicular Cancer enters metastasis and enters the bloodstream, and then it's a stone cold killer. Early detection, mandude guys. Early detection. Go get a thorough physical exam at least once a year. Men from the ages (roughly) of 28-40 are the most likely to develop this form of cancer. If you were born with an undescended or partially descended testicle, you are in the high risk category. Sorry to take up your space with this, GS, but I have lived this and I'd be truly happy if no more men _ever_ have to face this cancer. I'd like to make one more point before I STFU and step off. The most common fear among men, because the treatment for Testicular Cancer is to remove the cancerous testicle and save the good one (unless some new treatment is in the works that I do not know about), is that they will lose sexual function. Well, I'm here to tell ya, that is a myth. I know because it worried me when I faced this. You can have full on functionality with no need for any medical intervention. But if the cancer is not detected before it metastizes, you _definitely_ won't have sex. Ever. Testicular Cancer can be 100% defeated by regular physical exams and paying attention to warning signs. K. We now return to your regular channel. Peace out.

In the 70's and 80's the Soviets thought the effective defence zone of a carrier group to be 300 nm, so they developed plenty of anti-ship missiles with more than 300 nm range. P-500, P-700, Kh-22, KSR-5. These were to be launched from multiple platforms (ships, subs and Tu-16K, Tu-95K and Tu-22M bombers) from multiple directions. Two or three ships, 6-10 submarines and 1 or 2 bomber regiments with 40 bombers each, none of which would have stepped within the 300 nm bubble, with roughly 200 to 300 missiles, all big, heavy and most importantly supersonic. In this scenario subsonic Kh-35 were used with a range of 70 nm. The Kh-35 was meant to be used against smaller ships, frigates at most, not carriers. Limitations of DCS I'd like to say. Or not enough research, or just trying to ensure the desired outcome, I cannot tell.

Crazy thing about the Phoenix Missiles is that they were not originally designed to be Anti-Aircraft missiles. The Phoenix was originally designed to to intercept and destroy Missiles like Cruise Missiles or ICBMs from far distances way before they can get near any populated area or fleet. However in testing it showed high marks in accuracy not just in destroying missiles but also in destroying Aircraft from far ranges. and that is when it became known as an effective Anti-Aircraft Missile with the capability to shoot enemy missiles too and the F-14 was specifically designed as a carrier for these missiles. Like how the A-10 was designed around it's Gun. The F-14 was designed for the Phoenix Missiles.

The only part of this I'm not sure is portrayed correctly (and my well be a limitation of DCS, I don't know) is that the Phoenix/AWG-9 system with the F-14 was designed for multiple target engagement. That didn't really seem to be happening here (ripple shots at the bombers and then at the cruise missiles). All the shots seemed to just be one at a time. Not sure if that would really change the outcome, just something I noticed. For all the cruise missiles in the air, to only have lost two ships from the group is pretty impressive.

If real fleet defense would be there (DCS limitation, I guess) it would've been even less. Have that BG going full flank evasive, with ECM, CM, SAMs and CIWS going off, not to mention that giant furball of missiles, ships and fighters, a lot of those ASMs would've wandered. The range was also waaaay low. Those cats could probably kill a lot of that launch before it even happened.

I honestly believe that the tactical cost of loosing so many bombers to the Russians is worse than the US loosing 2 cruisers. However I do believe this was down to not loosing the carrier, if the carrier was lost it would be different. In this scenario, the Us have not lost their Sea or Air superiority and have got backup carriers to fill tactical holes while ships are resuplied Anti Air in Safe Harbour, however 2 weeks later with 2 substituted Cruisers, the Carrier group would be back operational. Not to mention that still after this attack the carrier group can still defend itself semi effectively and steam unassited to safe harbour not retracting any further resources, while the Russians have gone seemingly all in. As a final point, financially, I believe the US could weather this hit much more effectively than the Russians

To be honest, i think its a win for the American Battle Group on a strategic lvl. Most important ship, the carrier, was not destroyed. 2 Escorts and 8 Tomcats lost. The Escorts hurt, but they are not of such strategic importance. The carrier can still commit strikes. On the other side, the loss of 65 Bombers is a large hit for the commander in the operational area i guess. The russians would be able to fight for air dominance maybe, but would not have sufficent bombers for another airstrike of significant level any more in that region.

Like to see this with TODAY's airwings (all Super Hornets / F35s), AAMRAMS (no AIM 54's). And the Aegis systems in full Auto. This would also mean just about all escorts would be VLS and AAW capable. And have the attackers be the Chinese PLAN. And yes - the E-2s would be up as well. Otherwise - yes, Red Storm Rising describes type of battle (at least a couple happened). I was in CICO school and read the book all in one night (started at 7PM, went to bed 3 AM, then went to class in the morning).

Tbh doesn’t even look like the carrier was targeted. The two ships sunk each got hit by several missiles that I’d call overkill. I think if a carrier group was hit like this everything is going to be lost. I also think that if a carrier group is hit like this the world will soon end

The problem with 80s tech, good, very good but still limited. Seekers probably would have trouble ( I'm guessing here) with discriminating between ships. Not shown would have been chaff launchers to try and further confuse the missiles not to mention the ships also attempting to maneuver

The missile on missile kill was AIm-54A vs either an Exocet or a H-2Y Silkworm... either way it's a damn good shot even better was the claim that the Iranian's fired an AIM-54A at a blob and got 3 kills due to the size of the warhead and the subsequent explosion of the Mig-23 it hit and fatally damaging the other 2 aircraft... it was a truely outstanding missile and with the Tomcat's radar it was an amazing weapons system. Also as an aside this fight would have started out at 300 miles+ but hey plot magic... great video and thanks for making it...

What's really scary is that we don't have ANYTHING like the F-14A/B Tomcat in the entire US Navy. Fat Mary (F-35) may have stealth but it doesn't have the F Pole that an AIM-54 gives the Tomcat. Also I would argue that the engagement is a resounding success for the USN because the CVN survived to fight another day and was able to recover the Tomcats that were not lost. I was FC1-1138 USN 82'-92'. My speciality was the SPS-48 C and E. The one aspect of the engagement is the 80's NTDS system. The 48's on the CVN, any CG's or CGN's along with SPY would have been passively tracking those bombers and launching 100's of SM-1, SM-2 and maybe even SM-2ERs. DCS does not model this very well. Anyways great video and it defintely created a pucker factor!

This is what makes hypersonic, stealth cruise missiles so scary. You can launch them from much further away and they are much harder to detect with radar. You could very well be dead before you even know they're coming. US side should be lucky most of those ASM went after the two ships instead of being more evenly distributed amongst the fleet.

Oh man! This was better than a movie! I remember hearing once about an F-14 out of missiles and guns which took down a cruise missile by tapping it with its wingtip. Maybe something to try, if the game physics allow it? It may have come from a Tom Clancy novel, so, kids don't try this at home.

I think whoever you heard that from may have been 'borrowing' from a WWII tactic, where pilots intercepting V-1 'buzz bombs' would fly alongside and tip the V-1 over with their wingtip.

This is a really interesting scenario that really points out the important of costs, both physical and monetary. The US lost out monetarily, but in all honesty the extra billion is hardly anything in the grand scheme of military spending, but an extra billion to Russia with their more depressed economy can be more devastating. Russia also lost out physically in terms of units lost, there's no way they will likely mount an assault like that again or else they would never have bombers or deployable cruise missile capabilities. Russia also failed at achieving the targeted result, the destruction of the battle group, and most importantly the destruction of the carrier, which came out completely unscathed. Even if they succeeded in doing a lot of damage, the US still has the capabilities to assemble several more carrier groups. Its safe to assume that unless Russia was really backed into a corner a scenario like this would probably never play out.

The more important cost is the dead Russians... because just like today, it would be extremely hard to convince the next ones in line to join in on another suicide mission. Because when even Russians know they're going to lose eventually, the next thing that follows is usually revolution in that country. It just takes enough dead soldiers. So we simply keep giving them more dead soldiers... It's hard arithmetic, but eventually they understand.

This was really good and a great Cinematic. Loved the water shots of the missiles as it really puts into perspective the term "saturation attack" That said I've run a modern day version of this scenario in a tactical simulator (CMO) just with TU-22M2 & TU-160s instead of bears, F-18C & E/F (True to the CBG I was wargaming). In 10 scenario and engagement sets Redfor landed a singular missile on a DD. SM-6, SM-2, ESSM layered ECM and decoys are incredibly effective. On the flip side in most scenarios the bombers were able to get away with fewer than 10 losses due to the forward fighter screen they had.

There’s the question of whether an attack like this is even possible of happening today. As we saw in the video, Russia wasted a huge amount of strategic bombers in the attempt of taking out a CSG which only grossed them 2 sunk ships, and a untouched carried. This video is really a testament to show the defensive power that a fully kitted out CSG possesses. Even a country committing almost all of their bombers is only able to take out a couple ships, neither of them being a high value target like a carrier. Of course, the human factor and fail rate isn’t shown here, but it’s still interesting to see.

The AIM-54 seeker was so good it could track and intercept an ICBM. This was tested several times in the 80s. The tracking/seeker systems were taken and placed in rockets launched into space and tested against a second rocket launched. I want to say the tests were 100% successful but I don't actually remember the number of tests. I just remember that as a proof of concept it showed we already had the tech to track and shoot down an ICBM successfully. I think this may also have been the origin of the Brilliant Pebbles concept of space based interceptors.

Awesome demonstration of a theoretical probability. The question I asked myself, bombers already sent the missiles. Only a few escorts. Knowing the Phoenix missiles can take down the bogeys missiles. Why not leave a unit to go after escorts & the remainder to go after the majority of The missiles because the bombers unloaded their total package & or ordinance. Tom cat being so fast and the love of my life all time military aircraft. That is my question ? Knowing that the defending package strike Force that is to protect the carrier. I don't know anything about anything, but since there are so many bombers, I would want those first, for strategic reasons. Everything you say is correct. But if the bombers get home, they can come back and do it again. If this is all of their bombers and we get them, we may take a greater hit this time, but it would be their only hit on us. Just thinking out loud here.
