In this video we follow the Northern Venture off the shores of Lake Erie as it heads upriver to deliver its cargo of crushed limestone.
We'll listen in as we hear several radio calls from the ship and from other boaters on the water.
This is the second video from a trip to Cleveland, Ohio.
This link shows the American Courage being loaded at the Cleveland Bulk Terminal:
• Big Ships, Heavy Cargo...
It ends with a surprise visit by the John G. Munson as it unloads more iron ore
This link shows how a ship reverses its way back to Lake Erie:
• Time Lapse of Freighte...
This link gives a more detailed showing of how a self-unloader is able to deliver its cargo to shore:

I hope you enjoy.
Let me know what you think.

Thank GOD for ALL these Companies that take care of the Business that most of us never realized even existed. Thanks for shedding some light on these businesses.

It's amazing that the large ship can get up that crooked narrow river. Thanks for the very interesting video, and the great editing to condense it down to a reasonable length to watch.

Love to see you do a tour of the lakes as far as shipping. We've got limestone mines, cement plants coal power plants that receive one thousand foot freighters, scrap metal, steel mills.

I'm hoping to get to Duluth/Superior and Marquette too. I'm also looking at the SW corner of Lake Michigan too. Let me know anywhere you think would be worthwhile and I'll do my best to make it.

Nice to see an other kind of video from you. Very interesthing. Notes: 03:29 new houses on what looked liked old industrial ground. 03:56 another type of bridge next to the X of 4X Speed. 14 bridges in view? 09:37 that is A curve to float through! Nice job, captain (with help from radar and cameras on front, I think). Nice flying under neath the bridges too! Did he go backwarts the same route? That's even harder!

Great video of the Northern Venture, the Cuyahoga River, and Cleveland! I've lived in Cleveland and surrounding suburbs all my life. Cleveland is a great city and your drone footage really made it look beautiful! I once navigated the Cuyahoga on a boat made of plastic milk jugs. Back in the 80's and 90's, Cleveland had an annual Riverfest. Part of the festivities was a Crazy Craft Race. My buddy and I built a catamaran with a couple hundred gallon milk jugs and foam insulation boards. We came in near last but we succeeded in our goal of not sinking and crossing the finish line, lol. At 6:10 you mention either a Coast Guard or fireboat escorting the ship. Behind the trees to the left of the bridge is a Cleveland Fire Station that houses a fireboat. The firehouse can be just barely seen at 7:00. This area of the river also looks wide enough that a ship could turn around if it wanted to. There is a turning basin further up the Cuyahgoa. Here is a neat video of Herbert C. Jackson turning around in the basin ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8C8xyjUSGl0.html. Lastly, not a big deal, but I couldn't help notice the Sunoco gas station at 29:44. That is one, of only two gas stations, that I believe are in the main downtown area of Cleveland. I used to fill up at that Sunoco when I worked downtown.

Thanks for such great info and wonderful stories (even the 2nd to last Sunoco downtown) and the video link. I figured a ship could probably trlurn around in one of those spots but wasn't sure. I'd love to see a picture of that milk jug catamaran. I'm really glad you enjoyed the video. I had a lot of fun making it and hope to return for more videos and to check out everything Cleveland has to offer.

@@nkyrailfan Thanks for the reply! I went back and looked at my pics from the crazy craft race. Our boat wasn't a catamaran, it was a single hull with outriggers. I just posted the pics to my flickr page. I don't think I can link it here in the comments but the link to my flickr page is on my youtube channel.

Oh one other thing. Depending on water and river conditions this boat could still require tug assistance.

Nice video and explaination of the loading of Northern Venture. Not clear on how the comodity gets offloaded from inside the hull? Are there conveyors under the load also?
@livingabovethe12th

The bottom of the cargo holds are like hoppers, the holds bottoms open onto a conveyor belt which travels up the boom.

I wonder how does the ship go back? Does she move backward?
@nkyrailfan
@nkyrailfan Месяц назад
I plan on coming back to see in person but I believe that's how it's done. They just reverse out the way they came in. Although, it looks like further inland there is enough room for a ship to turn around. So, it may just depend on where it is delivering in the river.

they reverse out back to lake?
@nkyrailfan
@nkyrailfan Месяц назад
I'm not sure, but this ship would need to go upriver more than a mile to find a spot to turn around. I believe they're able to easily control themselves going forward or reversing. So, it may just be easier to reverse out.

They back out the entire distance. Here is a video of a similarly sized ore hauler that makes the entire exit transit backwards. It's sped up quite a bit so only lasts 1:24 minutes. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BWlxk088jP4.html

@paulsturtz7638 I plan on a follow-up trip at some point. It's tough to judge the ship's movements through just the app. So, it's more of a "drive to Cleveland and hope" kind of situation. I will record it at some point.
