Here's a Sturgeon I caught on 2/9/19. The fish measured 78 x 29.5 and estimated 120lbs. The fish was caught on the St Croix River in Minnesota.
Since I know everyone will ask, here is a list of the the gear I used.

Darren (the soon to be record holder) has guided my teenage son and I for sturgeon on the river. I appreciate how he instills respect for the resource when he guides...He only guides catch and release for sturgeon. At first my son wanted a trophy to mount, but he has come around to realizing we need to release them. Congratulations Darren!

That fish is Minnesotas largest fish period. 6 foot 6 inches, 29 inches around. 120 lbs. It showed up in the mn star Tribune. That's quite the catch if you'd ask me

My dad caught a 6.5 foot sturgeon in the st croix river in the early 2000s. fought it for 1.5 hours. there’s a picture somewhere floating around i gotta find it. really wish we took official measurements and sent it in there’s no better feeling than catching a true MONSTER!

You have no idea how much I appreciate a true angler for catching and releasing for the next generation to come. Idk if a fish that age spawns still but always love to see it released especially a fish that old. You guys are awesome. Someone on here replied that is could be a MN state record is that true?

Thanks Joshua I release all my Sturgeon and fortunately here in MN, the law requires it most of the year. That fish was probably 60 years old and hopefully lives another 40. Also yes it is possible it will be the new state record, just some formalities we need to take care of.

@@Graceclaw I honestly don't see a foul hook. It may be that I am watching it on my phone and can't see the detail. They may have also been using 2 hooks and one got embedded in it's face during the fight. I don't know. If it was foul hooked then it is unethical to claim it as a new record given the rules. Given that I can't tell if it was or not, I won't make any claims to support or challenge their claim. Regardless, it is still a very cool fish to have brought up through the ice.

@@Graceclaw it is clearly hooked in the corner of it's mouth. The lure is hanging down below the mouth corner which makes it look like it is face hooked. Get a bigger/better moniter (not your phone) and you can see it. Go troll somewhere else now.

I have been fishing catfish for 70 years and sturgeon for about 20. Something you don't mention and others should know is that their survivability (catfish and sturgeon) is near 100% when proper catch and release is practiced. That means your record fish is out there ready to thrill some other anger and probably will be for years to come. What an incredible resource. Thanks for the catch and release and for the guys who helped you expand the hole to make it possible.

Giant sturgeon jumped right next to my boat - it wasn’t as big as the one you guys caught, but it was about 4.5 to 5 feet long. It was unbelievable, fun to see!

My grandfather used to speak of a spot on the Croix across from their house where giant sturgeon and catfish winter he said there was huge ones there only problem you literally have to live in the shack 24/7 to catch one that big, Awesome fish guys!!

Sturgeon don't even spawn until they are near 60 inches. So that fish is an incredible treasure for years to come since they can live over 100 years.

That is a huge lake sturgeon! Crazy that fish get that big around here. My biggest sturgeon is 6'9" but that was an average sized white sturgeon out west in British Columbia. I did something similar to this 2 winters ago for a 3 foot pike, had to do a triple hole because ice was thick and pike had the line at the back of its mouth. I went shoulder deep to noodle that like for my cousin. Great video, thanks for the share!

This species is a lake sturgeon, which are actually bottom feeders. They mainly eat invertebrates, and are scavengers as well. Certainly not at the top of the food web, but no predators can contend with taking down a fish of that size.

Hate to see that much stress on her, but good on you for putting that old baby-maker back. Be still a good size compared to our whites....very good for a green. But we get some monsters in the Columbia. Lake Sturgeon if I'm not mistaken? Cool fish!!

Thanks Mr Acuta yes it's a good size for a Lake Sturgeon but nothing compared to the big whites. We did our best to treat the fish well and return her back safely. Most of the time spent was not even under pressure from the rod, mostly just trying to figure out how to get it though the ice.
