Thanks to all that helped with the fire. Glad you didn't have any damage. Love the Buick. Can't wait to see Jack in a few years driving around in it. Take care and stay safe out there. GOD BLESS Y'ALL.
I'm so glad the firefighters got the fire out. And it's awesome that your friends were willing to help save your cars. What a legacy Great Grandma's car has ! Can't wait to see Jack driving it !
Keep it true Buick, I had 70 Gran Sport with a 455 ram air. It was the most fun I ever had in my life. I got married and sold it and I’ve regretted it every day since.
I saw your comments about the rat nests in the Buick. We had some trouble with critters chewing up the soybean oil based insulated wiring, so I put some blocks of Irish Spring Soap in the car and voila - no more critters.
Kent, I hope you get that beauty going again and we can watch grown up Jack doing burnouts with it. What a nice car. Great Grandma must be proud watching that thing go down the road these days. Thanks for showing us such a nice project car.
First, I'm glad your local/area heroes kept your community safe! God bless our firefighters! Second, I've always loved the Skylark; my sister had a 67 w/ a 340 v8. I'm good with the Buick 350 transplant since maintaining originality is important in a family heirloom. However, a 383 stroker would probably makes as much HP as a stock 455 and they're much cheaper and more plentiful...tho you would need a different bellhousing.... An LS would be more dependable and parts are everywhere.... Tough decision, beautiful car, fun video!!!
Thanks Dr. Lee! I like the 67 Buicks even more, I have had my eye out for a 67 GS but everything I find is on the East coast. After reading through all of the comments I am thinking we will put the Buick 350 in it for now because that will be the fastest option to get it back on the road.
Hey Kent. I’ve always been a big block fan. My idea is a Buick 455 stroker build. Then paint the car Skylark blue with a darker shade blue metallic flake and white racing stripes that are trimmed in cobalt. Sorry my mind goes too the extreme sometimes then I look in my wallet😂. The LS swap is ok just find a better transmission than the 6L80/6L90 GM still hasn’t fixed all the problems with them. Maybe a manual conversation. You, Jack and AJ will have fun building it, those are the precious memories.
The only fair option is to flip a coin. Good luck on whichever plan wins. This car is going to rock after it’s been overhauled and restored. Muscle cars are in my blood too… Great video!
When my brother in-law came home from Vietnam he bought a '68 Buick Skylark off the showroom floor. A lot of similarities. His was a 350 2bbl, his was charcoal gray with a black vinyl top, automatic. I was a MOPAR guy "69 Hemi Roadrunner was my favorite car, had other mopar muscle too. I'm with Jack on the LX motor. Parts are easier to find now a days, and you're bringing into a new era with a younger family group to enjoy it. It's easy with this video and you talking about your step dad Gary, where Jack gets his mechanical tinkering from. You're lucky you were able to keep that car all these years, wish I still had my muscle cars.
Congratulations on a cool old Buick! Run the other 350 Buick for now easiest way to get it back on the road. Then if you can ls swap later. Glad to see another Stepchild(1968-1969) Buick on Oklahoma. I'm in Tulsa we currently have 7 Buicks! Mark Sheppard
Hey guys. I would just put the Buick 350 in -- that would probably be the simplest solution. But more importantly, clean the whole car first, inside and out -- it deserves it, given its heritage. And I would take it easy on the burnouts too -- you don't want to put all that work into it, and blow another engine. Good luck to you. I'm sure it will come out nice.
First off thankful the shop everything in it is safe and the fire is out. Second, thanks for sharing the Skylark! Love the car and it’s story! And as for the engine, no question it’s got to be the Buick 350!!! Although I don’t know anything about it, I’m sure there are things that can be done to improve it. Better rods, balanced, bigger volume oil pan. Regardless leave the LS alone!!! One day Jack will thank you! Nothing against LS, in fact I drive one. Just not for this car. Everyone’s doing LS swaps so let this car be special!! Love the channel so keep it coming!
We see where Jack acquired all his spunk ! -- Continued good job with the restoration -- My Grandson working on a '85 Riv Buick - FWD -- A real money pit ! -- GOOD LUCK, KENT ! BTW -- It looks like you're still doing the bunny hop --- a little ---- Foot getting any better ?
Hey Kent, very glad to hear the fire is out. Great looking car, hope to see it running ASAP. And Jack is going to be mad at you for not blurring out the you-know-what parked outside the garage door LOL!
Wow Kent first off I’m so happy to hear you and the family are safe and the fire is out. Second OMG that Buick is sweet! LS sounds soooo good and would be amazing but due to the history with the car I think keeping it somewhat stock with the 350 would be nice. Although you could turn that 350 into a 383 stroker. So many choices. No matter what it’s going to be Epic. Love the channel and looking forward to more. ✨✅✨You’re Awesome!
Hi there I’m from Oklahoma to and I have a 72 Buick skylark and a 71 Cutlass conv I’m doing a ls swap on the cutlass and I can tell you it’s not cheep I had a 69 and wish I wouldn’t of sold it looking forward to more videos on the Buick
Ls swap will be whole lot fun!!! Have done a Ls and Lt swap in both of my Chevy short, bed trucks. It’s not that bad to do get a wire harness from PSI plug and play you can’t go wrong.
I'm happy to see you all are safe. I'm also happy to see you are healing well and up walking on that foot. What an awesome car! As for car motor...I don't know a thing about motors! Lol Hmmm... I'd do what I felt was best and later Jack can always swap out whatever if need be. Jack is such a wonderful young man and excellent big brother. And AJ is growing so much! You and your wife are doing a great job with them! Why do we never see Mom? Lol
That was my favorite car when i was in my 20s. I think it looks way nicer with the rims that come on the 80 Buick regal. I wish you'd consider those wheels. Oh, keep it all Buick.
Kent my son is a wild land firefighter so I do know what they go through. He just came back from a 22 day fight in California. This summer has been bad for wild fires. I Pray that all Firefighters stay safe and everyone of them make it back to their families safe and sound.
There’s always one vehicle that stays in the family until it can’t anymore. I heard a hot spot lit back up yesterday or something like that. They sure do have a fuel funding shortage for those small departments. I say it can be LS swapped when jack or aj takes over it, so 350 is my vote lol.
SO GLAD THE FIRE DIDN'T REACH YOU. I KNOW JACK WANTS POWER IN THE BUICK BUT FOR NOSTALGIC SAKE I WOULD HAVE TO GO WITH ANOTHER BUICK MOTOR. PLEASE KEEP US UP TO DATE.
Everyone has been going with the LS swap.....be a little different and keep it original. I say keep the LS motor for Jack's vehicle. In my opinion it would mean more to have that motor in his first vehicle that yall build together. Either way, I'm sure yall will enjoy the car. On a side note, a couple of the guy from the fire department I'm on went out to help with that fire. It was a mean booger to get under control!!
We sure appreciate their help. Jack really likes the LS stuff because everyone else on the internet is doing it. Personally I think he needs to struggle with an old slobbering carburetor first lol.
Kent my husband is a Mopar guy. He still talks about him and his dad rebuilding engines. I still remember him teaching me about rebuilding a carburetor. That was 25 years ago. There are not many kids out there who would know how to rebuild a carburetor. I’d say teach Jack how to do it. When he is older and wants to switch out the engine that will be his time.
@@SpeedBumpGarage😂😂😂 I remember those days of gunked up carburetors and rebuilding alternators and such. It was all hands on deck with repairs and maintenance, and we all knew how to do the basics. Watching you guys brings back a lot of memories...
Good to know that you guys made it through this okay. And also, that Jack could and would drive * one of those out of danger if the fire had closed in. Good to know aout the Project. * with J.J. as a copilot.
So glad the fires didn't reach your place! I'm with the Buick crowd. 350, or IF you can find one a 455. But keep it Buick. Jack can LS swap it later when he's old enough. But I'd keep it Buick, for now.
I’d definitely stick with the Buick 350. More original. I was going to say 455 Buick so good thing I waited for you to talk about that lol. They are hard to come by and yes, they don’t give them away. Thinkin 455 Olds but should stay Buick. I also agree with removing the GSX spoiler, just adds to the sleeper look with it off. Nice car and I think it’s awesome you wanna keepin the family forever!!
I like the current paint scheme on the car and my vote on engine swap would be the 5.3 LS.Great video as always and I'm glad the fire didn't get to your property.Note:check with Halfass Kustoms you tube on LS swap he has done a few.
That thang sound good in the burnout video 🔥🔥 we have GOT to see you FIX it and drive it. But you got to put that LS in it that would Be nice and have some Power
You need a crate 350 and build it up with a new cam and maybe aluminum rods and swap the auto trans for a manual 4 on the floor. Holley EFI. No LS swap.
keep it stock don't see any buick motors anymore yes LS u can make power cheap but nothing beats old school and also didn't know u lived by mooreland I'm in woodward
Glad you and the family are safe. My vote, for what it's worth, save the Riviera itself if you can , sell it to fund either an old school 455 or a SBC that can take a little more torture, maybe a Chevy 350. Save the LS to build something else down the road.
@@SpeedBumpGarage Maybe I'm just a weirdo but I prefer 4-door cars. Had a couple of 2-doors and hated the contortion acts to get people and stuff in and out of the back seat.
Put the 350 in it, restore it to what you knew/enjoyed, leave the LS for Jack when he is an adult and let him decide then what engine to use once it’s his.
Due to the history of the car I would have a family meeting and decide what motor to go with.... the ls engine is a good choice but is it the right one for your car????? The ls would be a very reliable choice though.....
Are fires a common occurrence? If so, there are guidelines on how to modify the space around your house and shop to get the vegetation/fire load cut back.
I like the Comet. Unfortunately I found one in Florida with no a/c and the owner wanted an insane amount of money for a car that needed a lot of work. I can't find anything I can afford.
Keep looking Daniel! You will find something. I do my best to cash ready so that I have a chance at being the first one to the vehicles when they pop up.
This is the best one yet.I haven't seen them all.but I had to stop the video to say this.I wouldn't take I call them whale tails on the trunk. I hope you leave it on.Ive see stuff like that on goats (GTO).but I had to stop the video to say that.well I'm going back to the video.
Hey dude, my tiny channel is also based in Oklahoma. If you need some motivation for building it check out the 68-69’s on my channel. The red 69 I’ve had parked for close to 20 years, just pulled it out and got it running last fall. The 68 i bought in 2000 when i was 16, crashed it the same year and patched it back up over the next 2 years, like you i still have it…..and definitely ditch the wing 😉
I think you fix up the old Buick engine for the time being. Do your research and rebuild the 5.3 LS as you have time and can afford. If the Buick engine blows a second time you put the LS in, best of both worlds. Maybe Jack will find another car he would rather put the LS in when he is ready
If you are going to paint it, don't go with clear coat. My 78 F-150 paint still almost looks like new with no clear coat. It doesn't hold up and starts to peel off for a long time not like enamel. Keep it 350 original and much as possible.
Every single car that was manufactured by the big 3 including the cadillacs. All had the vinyl top rust spots. Not only in the a pillars, but in the back near the rear window as well! It was inevitable because when they welded on the roofs that led into around the rear window, which caused immense Ross! No matter what you do or what you did, it's gonna happen again period even if you store it. Inside of a building or keep it under a tarp, it's just gonna happen again. There's really nothing that you could have done. To prevent that period those vinyl tops. When they were originally produced held so much water. It was unbelievable. The only best bet you would have had would have been to have removed. The Chrome trim that held the vinyl top edges down that would have prevented some of it, but not all of it. I really liked it in the stock. Brown that it came in. ! Not necessarily the poverty But a good set of rims would make it look spot on period and yes, obviously another vinyl top!
68 Skylark: get the wing off, repair rosty parts, repaint in original color, clean interior, make security check. Give it your wife. In other words: back to the roots :)
It would be very difficult to drop a small block Chevy into that Buick from what I've read I would spend your money and time on doing a really good rebuild on a Buick engine I don't think finding parts should be that much of an issue
