Backside turns are one of the most technical moves in snowboarding, but once you get the feel and confidence of a good backside turn you will be much safer in all terrain.
In this episode of How To Xv I go through the different steps of a heel side turn, as well as some of the common mistakes often seen when people are progressing, and what you can do to overcome these and why it is so important that you do.
Let me know if you have any questions in the comments below.

3:22 this was my mistake for years. In many places they teach this with your hips totally aligned with your board, which is a fatal error (gorilla style everywhere). If you rotate a little your hip, and then bend your knees like "sitting down" in a chair (kind of), that helps a lot.

I am snowboard instructor so I know what you talking about. The reason why usually they or I should say we teach beginner aligned body with board is avoid using upper body to init the turn. This will very big problem if it becpmes a habit. you can see tons of snowboarders throwing their arms and turning their upper body to turn. XV talked about this in the other video for toe side turn. And for intermediate to advance rider, I always show them how to open their upper body to improve their riding. Problem is most snowboarder won't take any higher level course after they THOUGHT they already know how to ride. BTW: Thank you so much XV for the video. Very informatic and helpful. Good tips to fine tune my skill.

the movement of the legs is completely different from how they taught me, with a center stance. you move much better with a smoother weight transition from froont foot to back foot. Thank you, as usual

That's a great video. It will be my 3d season, but I have about 25-30 days on the snow. I'm still unstable on my heelside turn and that's why I'm sooo disappointed with myself. I've notice I'm opening and turning my upper body part too much and it's changing the direction of the board and I find myself horizontal on the slope, almost for side slip position. But trying to fix it it's difficult. I just can't feel it. Will play this video over and over again till my brain absorbs the information :)) All my friends who started snowboarding after me are now advanced and I'm still struggling and can't handle stiff terains and that sucks. Nobody wants to ride with me anymore:) But I won't quit. Great season and lot of snow to All! 💓

I can't heelside carve to save my life! My toe side just comes naturally. 20 days on mountain so far, trying to heelside carve everyday. Never able to do it. I'm starting to wonder if it is my gear's problem. But I heard people can ride on any set up as long as they're not out of ordinary. :(

At 1:07 and 2:01, it appears that the weight is more on the back foot rather than centered. The back leg also looks like it is more bent with knee forward while the front leg is more straight. Can anyone explain this?
@XVDLR
@XVDLR Год назад
When you do your turn you initiate it with the weight on the front leg and same angle with both legs but through out the turn you will move the weight gradually towards your back foot while depending on it. There for the front leg will end up being straight as the back is bent

Please explain why this is a backside turn and not frontside.
@leogoodwin1279
@leogoodwin1279 5 лет назад
pierrewikberg true that this rotation direction is frontside (if you carve off a kicker on your heel edge and rotate in the direction of the turn, then the spin you do is a frontside rotation) but when the board maintains contact with the snow it’s a backside turn. likewise, if you rotate in this direction to pop onto a rail, it’s also a backside rotation at least that’s my understanding of it ..

A Very, SIMPLE 'Fix' to 80% of Riders, is to use LESS Forwards-Lean upon the Front Binding than the Rear, by, oh 7", or two clicks of the high-back angle-block at the Rear of MOST bindings. I've been saying such for over 3 decades now, but it's "NEWS" now.. "PSR"
@ericbrammer2245
@ericbrammer2245 11 месяцев назад
And, "why" my fix works:. It allows the front Hip to articulate Deeper into the Turn, about 2/10Ths/Second Sooner than the rear-hip., Thus, Your WEIGHT 'Drops INTO the Turn, AHEAD-OF, the Turn. Anticipation Matters (NOTE THAT, AASI!!), and Form Follows. "PSR" (been on Freecarve since day-3, and BOL, both times, since they were).

@lucaborroni7663
@lucaborroni7663 5 лет назад
I hate to sound like a know-it-all but “edge” is definitely not “bordo” in Italian. It’s “lamina”! Anybody who has ever skied would know the Italian term. “Forward lean” doesn’t mean “to move your weight forward”, as the current translation suggests, but rather “to add inclination to the front spoiler”. A major difference.

Hi Deylan. I have made this channel in order to share the tips and tricks that I have learnt in my long career and which I feel could interesting to others -they might not be what you find in the CASI instructor manual- but I hope there are elements that people will find interesting and able to utilise in their riding. Just to note... I have the highest level Diploma in France and am 7 x World Champion, so like to think that something I have learnt along the way will be useful.
