David Chipperfield is one of the most important architects of our time even though his architecture is anything but vain and conspicuous. He works with clear lines instead of elaborate effects, building the perfect containers for the worlds best museums. In June, Chipperfield was presented the European Unions coveted Europa Nostra Award for the Neues Museum in Berlin. ARTS.21 reveals the discreet signature style of the English master architect.

I love his work, and that he considers context rather than making a personal monument

I have no respect for this man or the pseudointellectual sycophants that choose to support him! He did a terrible job with the New Museum. The Stüler building used to be one of the wonders of Old Berlin (i.e. before WW2 left it in ruins). But instead of paying homage to the genius of Friedrich August Stüler, Chipperfield chose to bestow posterity with one of these generic reconstructions ("with the splendour of a public toilet") that can be found all around post war Germany ... believe me! ‒ One can only hope that the Stockholmers have the good sense to sack that botcher of an architect, before he destroys their historic inner city with a new Nobel Museum that has neither beauty nor proportion!
