As a carpenter for 30 years, I wish I could have been a craftsman at a level like this...6000 hours for a project is not doable here on the east coast...NOBODY wants to pay for quality.

You work in the wrong location.
@MintStiles
@MintStiles 5 лет назад
Craftsmanship is one thing, but I definitely agree that people need to be able to pay for it. We all talk as if a commoner in 1800’s can afford these mansions. At the end of the day, practicality is just as important as quality. There is always a opposing trade off. It is where on the spectrum you want to stand on that determines your niche.

You have been a craftsman longer than this dude has lived. that alone puts you closer to the category of master in my humble opinion.

Great to see people having pride their work and also their clients appreciating quality craftsmanship and who are willing to pay what is deserved. We are missing this in today's mass-produced world of complete crap. MDF flat packs make me want to eat my own shit. Hats off to you, your work looks truly stunning!

Good to see a young person capture the crafts that are slowly going away. Nowadays the younger generation just want to use a CNC machine and call it crafts. I've been working with wood for 65 years now and love every minute of it. I had a great wood shop teacher in high school and he worked it to where I got two years wood shop and two years being a TA. He taught me so much and I'm learning every day about the beautiful wood GOD put on this earth for us to enjoy! Keep up the great work young man!

If you gave his shop and 6 months time to all the contestants. I have a feeling the gap in "skill". Would dramatically decrease. That amount of time is unrealistic for most craftsmen to spend on a single piece. Not saying the guy doesn't do a great job. Although I believe he has a large advantage.

I am blessed to work at NK and I can tell you the project we are working on now and the ones coming down the pipe are mind bending on a Egyptian Pyramid level. We are doing things most people can only do with a CNC, by hand.

Im not sure why they would call him a master Craftsman, when it showed his shop and the carpenters in the shop actually building the stairs. Calling him a great designer is more appropriate.
@laius6047
@laius6047 7 лет назад
maybe because to build stairs is actually a craft isn't it. And lets leave the semantics of looking up the word in dictionary etc. He worked and is working with his hands to produce something out of wood, thats craftsman, "mater" i don't care about that, but like I said these are just words. I wouldn't call him joiner or carpenter. A woodworker or craftsman suits best

Does It matter who I know? You chose to criticize someone else's work, which you cannot perform yourself.
@Apaulshi
@Apaulshi 6 лет назад
boekelnj Now it looks like the critc doesn't enjoy critique. Fundamentally, it takes a small mind to tear down others and a magnanimous mind to let someone else get praise. Go ahead and continue to define yourself from this point forward. Seriously. We have all been the critc and we all have an opportunity to grow.

The reason things are made quickly and not to last is so the company can make money, otherwise they'd make all these fantastic products, then everyone would have them last forever and they'd go out of business without consistent sales. It's called "planned obsolescence", that's why light bulbs fail, computers and TVs die, why furniture falls apart, etc. How long a business like his will last is up in the air, must be pricey to buy from him, and he only does stairs, that's a pretty small net to cast.

No one at the age of 28 is a master craftsman, no one. It takes years of experience to become a truly skilled wood worker. Send him over to my shipyard and the master craftsmen I employ will teach him how to work with wood.

You are failing to realize that human intelligence varies tremendously. This guys’ IQ is much, much higher than the master craftsmen who remain employed by somebody with such an enormous ego that he feels compelled to make negative comments without posting evidence of his own self reported granduer.

Jean-Marc Legentil Moui.

I hate the endless use of the word 'Master'. It originally derived as a historical job title for the guy who would lead a team of carpenters, stonemasons or whatever - like a modern day foreman or supervisor. It's now been butchered and over-used to the extent that someone who can run a Toyota from A to B can call themselves a 'Master Driver'.

Truly exceptional work but do staircases really need to be made so extravagantly? Just looking at them reminds me of those $200,000 cars like the Lamborghini which are the most unsafe cars in the world. Why would anyone buy such an expensive car at the expense of ones life How insane is that? And so, why spend for such an expensive staircase when one of much lesser value will work just as well? You spend 1,000s of hours of your life creating extreme staircases that, while beautiful, only the very rich can afford. It makes no sense to me.
