My grandfather, a dairy farmer in southern Wisconsin, used to buy Master Mix brand animal feed, and always wore a Master MIx cap that was given to him by the feed dealer. My grandfather was quite famous for always wearing a 'Master MIx' cap - baseball cap, knit caps, etc., so very familiar with this brand. I was so delighted to see this brand on your channel - a blast from the bast, and warms my heart! He passed away more than 10 years ago, and keep a framed photo of him in his Master Mix cap!

Nice tip and story. I delved into online searches and managed to find a removed eBay sales page wtih an old ad board for MASATER MIX FEEDS, SOLD HERE. It's also quite nice company logo with the three downward chevrons in a shield shaped emblem.

Never seen videos disassembling, cleaning, repairing watches before a few days ago and finding your channel. I'm mesmerized now, and love watching them. What got me intrigued is that I have my grandpas Hamilton railroad pocket watch from the 20s. To understand how time was so critical to the railroad, conductors, etc and seeing the initials in the back of the gold watch cover... amazing stuff.

after years of playing Magic the Gathering and listening to an ominous voice of Marshall on Limited Resources, I have spent the last 6 months diving into watch repair and watchmaking. the Wristwatch Revival channel has always felt comfortable to me from the start... today I finally figured it out. I came because of Sean's recommendation and watched two videos so far. I don't really care for wrist wratches, but I like your videos very much Marshall. No idea if it's just the general idea of an esports commentator/host (I do love me some MtG tho) doing this as a hobby or if it's your general style, intonation and cadence of your commentary - this is simply amazing. Something tells me that you could commentate a grass growing competition and I'd still be compelled to watch. Also I wish I was fascinated by something along the lines of watch restoration or anything crafty in general. This seems like a great hobby to really forget the world around you and to clear your head.

In my experience I find that trying to do fine work like that when you're already calm can be quite relaxing, dare I say even zen, it makes you slow down and soak in the details of what your doing. Of course I've only worked on "Real Grade" gundam model kits and not a watch so it could be a totally different state of mind beyond just the greater skill required

Another great restoration. I really like that you show different movements on the channel. It keeps things interesting. If the previous owner of the watch smoked it might explain the sticky residue in the watch and on the face. It just might have been cigarette tar.

It's basically a buffing compound. Thick goop with graded sand in it. Kind of. A bit more technical than that but that's the basic idea.

Marshall, I really enjoy watching your videos. I have a question about this video. In more recent videos where you restore watches with automatic winding, don't you make a point of putting some lubrication on the inside of the barrel so that the mainspring can't be overwound? Did you do this with this watch with its unusual arbor that is attached to the barrel lid?

Helbros watches was founded by the Helbein brothers in 1913. The company registered a trademark registered in New York in 1916 and in Geneva in 1918. The 1918 Swiss registration probably explains why the company is sometimes said to have been founded in 1918. The brothers’ nationality is usually given as Swiss-German. This is contradicted by contemporaneous reports, William Helbein, who managed the company and is named on an early trademark registration, was born in Russia, now Ukraine in 1889, and later became an American citizen in 1916. According to his obituary. William was educated in Russia, the Netherlands and Belgium and his father was a diamond dealer. This watches is branded West Germany, but all of the written text is in English instead of German. The build would be between 1949 to 1990.

I'd guess the yellowing on the dial was a degraded clear coat rather than "dirt". Lettering gone "like tears in the rain". Thanks for another excellent video. New hand press!

I guess you must be the most enthusiastic watchmaker on the planet. The logo of that watch indeed looks like the logo of 'Chevron', a brand of motor oil and combustible products.

Found a watch Made by Helbros, made from 1960 --- 1969 slightly different dial but has the master mix logo the same. I just googled " vintage master mix watches, don't know if it's any help

100 US$ seams a bit much for this watch. It have a PUW Movement and this very common dial like a lot of German watches from the 60s and 70s (Anker, Junghans, Zentra and a lot more). I bought a few of these watches in a reasonable working state on ebay, all around 30 - 40 €. But nice Watch regardles, i realy like this very specific german watch design from this time period, and nice Video, as allways

PS: the PUW 1461 Movement was produced between 1969 and 1971 and Helbros where closed down in the early 70s, so there is the timeperiod for your little patient on your operationtable ;)

I'm guessing that you're paying for the actual movement. I thought that $100 seemed high for a broken no name watch. Although it is a automatic and from what I've noticed is that there is only a handful of manufacturers of quality movements and other companies put their name on it. They may design the watchface and bezel but a lot of times companies like Omega even uses movements made by other manufacturers. Which I never knew.

I enjoy watching you. I like watches, but when I wear one. It either races or slows down till it stops. It doesn't make any difference if it's self winding or hand wound. The watch goes on a spree one way or the other. I even tried pin watches. Same song. So I have clocks and my phone to tell me the time.

Hey, Marshall. Any idea how I can find someone to regulate a watch and also service a 1904 pocket watch? I have a Seiko with a 7s26 movement. I had a jewelery store send it for service and it came back, and I wore it for a year but it was gaining 1.75 minutes per day. As a bus driver that was unacceptable so I put it away for the last 3 years and I'd like to have someone just take a look at it and see if it can get brought into spec. I don't want to pay over 100 bucks for another service given it's been done so recently. Help, please, if you can.

The lume looks original for a Helbros. Prior to Elgin buying them ~1968, they lumed their hands by dipping them in a Tritium compound, then once dried, polished the excess off the top side with a 2000 grit sanding stick. Crude and nasty way of luming. At least it dates your watch to pre-1968.

Thanks for the historical note. I would not have guessed at this watch being well over 50 years old. Did Helbros pioneer that strange barrel design? It was very Timex of them if so. Imagine sanding tritium. That's a beta particle emitter that you really don't want to be messing about with. It has probably mostly decayed to H3 by now but still... Something I'm coming to terms with is if I'm going to be working on some of these early 20th century watches, I'm just going to have to stump up the coin for a Geiger counter so that I can deal with them appropriately.

Just acrylic, hence the "poly" part it's only ment for plastics, glass and sapphire probably won't even react to it or if they do, minimally so

Hi, your video was interesting and entertaining as always! But I still have a question: when you come across a watch, how can you be sure that what's on the hands is not radium? I was thinking of buying one or two on eBay to have a go at disassembling them, and when the date of fabrication is not clear, I don't know how to tell radium hands from the harmless hands..any advice?

First instinct is to tell you that you need a Geiger Counter. You could possibly see whether it can deactivate a trip beam often used in shop doorways. The ones that cause a beep or buzz sound when the invisible beam is interrupted across the entrance doorway . Usually they use UV which is much lower energy but relatively intense . Maybe radiation from radium hands could have enough energy to energise the receiver . It's worth a try ....

My father was the head of feed research for Central Soya which was the larger company that Master Mix feed spawned. He had a watch like this. Gave them out to sales folks as incentives and also certain employees and very large customers. They eventually were bought by a company named Bunge

Multiple radioactive compounds have been used in luminous hands and dials including: Radium-226 (used up to the late 50's/ early 60's), Promethium-147 (uncommonly still used) and Tritium (Hydrogen-3) (more commonly still used), The problem with Radium is it damages the phosphor and stops it glowing despite taking 1600 years for HALF to decay away. In addition it is chemically similar to calcium and thus any that enters the body tends to be absorbed into the bones.

Nice, relaxing channel, Marshall. You can buy a demagnetize/magnetizer block at Harbor Freight or any tool supply for a few bucks. I used to sell the Wiha brand when I was in the tool repair business. You can magnetize or demagnetize any instrument or tool.⚙️⌚

I believe this is a Helbros Watch based on a Google search of other watches of that brand. I found an article that has more information about the brand. The brand was founded by the Helbein brothers in 1913. One of the brothers, William Helbein, became a naturalized American citizen in 1916. William Helbein, founder of Helbros, who was a Russian jew who migrated to the US escaping from the “pogroms” of tzarist Russia at the beginnings of the 20th Century, registered the brand Helbros in New York And Geneva in the 1910’s. A great part of his sales pitches was to sell his watches to companies to be given as prizes. Master Mix was founded in Indiana by Dale W. MacMillen, an early proponent on the use of supplements in animal feeding and a pioneer in the processing of the soy bean, so iis nutrients could be better absorbed by farm animals.

No biggie, but you might want to remove the "G" on the dial that's left over from "SELF WINDING."

Watch your videos a lot, then I subscribed. And now I'm a regular. So question I have a vostok amphibian and it stopped working, would it be cheaper to buy another rather then to have it repaired?

Your videos are great but Google are completely destroying them with their insane amount of adverts they insert. Google are completely devaluing your hard work :-(

I do understand your regret at damaging the dial on that watch. All the insides are clean and oil and running great and the only thing the customer sees is the dial face plate that you damaged. Now I understand why you don't do much work on dials. At least that watch was not a cherished heirloom, rare antique or a $20,000 Rolex. At least it was a learning experience for you.

I think that you can call it a Helbro. I am a bit older, and I recall a watch of that name advertised on TV in New York in the 1950's.

Thanx for doing extra time with the Mastermatic ! Edit: Decades ago, ads for clocks used to have them set to 8:20 in the pictures. Did they change it to 10:08 to change the frown to a smile? And why were they at 8:20 to begin with?

ahhh master mix... great feed ... , my grandfather had 5 or 6 and not one was good, got them for buying 200 dollars of feed so said, sorry you paid 100 dollars for it.

Thank you for your videos they are excellent. I watched one of your videos and you mentioned an online course and gave a shout out but I can’t remember the name of the channel. I would like to look into it so I can learn a bit more about what you are doing. Can you say again what the channel is? Your videos have inspired me to look into this further and to start a new hobby for myself.
