In this video we attend a boat survey being done by Elliot Berry of Marsurv who had previously surveyed 3 boats for us prior to purchase & today he is surveying a potential purchase for some friends of ours; John & Sharon.
We see what surveys entail, find out about some major issues uncovered by surveys & we discuss one of our previous surveys that potentially saved us thousands of pounds & a lot of time & heartache.
Don't buy a boat without watching this!
If you enjoy our vlogs & want to contribute by buying us a coffee here's the link; www.buymeacoffee.com/Narrowbo...
but there is absolutely no pressure to do so. However it would be lovely if you would leave a comment below, like & subscribe to the channel (it's totally free of charge) as by doing these things it helps us grow the channel.
Thanks very much.

excellent and informative as always. It is so important to not only get good advice but also to listen to that advice. Remember the surveyor will be independent of the marina or owner and their job is to tell you what is right and wrong with the boat.

Totally agree with Elliot about painting the base plate. I do some internal eye rolling when some boaters use the excuses Elliot mentioned for not doing it.

@@nbspudley There again it depends on the canal and how deep the draft. Anyone who has navigated the Ashby with a deep boat will know only too well about getting stuck on the mud. Last time I was up there about a year ago there was a huge "tug" type design boat with rivets and all sorts. Owner mentioned it was a "replica". He was taking on water just before Bosworth marina with the intention of getting up to Snarestone. I left about 30 minutes later after watering up and he was moored about 100yds above the marina as he was too deep to go further. He hadn't twigged just how much water he had aboard until he got stuck in the mud. About a week or so later on my return trip he was still moored up in same spot. So yes painting base plate might work in some instances but not all. A light boat not drawing much in a deep canal is one thing but the reverse can be entirely different. I suppose too that relying on just four anodes is not quite the thing. The owner of my boat had ten anodes and I had another four fitted too as had no idea how long original anodes would last. Plus fitted an isolation transformer instead of a galvanic isolator for when connected to shore power. Earthing via the hull. This allows the mains RCBs to function as designed. So the moral of the story is that one size doesn't fit all.

That was a very interesting video. I’m not familiar with this type of boat but I enjoyed watching this video very much. The couple that was buying the boat was very nice 😊 and friendly too. I hope that they are going to be happy with their boat too. Thanks for showing me what it takes to make a boat sturdy and safe.

Glad it helped Kevin. That was the intention from the start - not to make people worry at all but to help them consider things they’d maybe not thought of. If you need any help or advice we’re here & happy to help. 👍🏻

Always always add inspector fail insurance. Saw a vid a few years ago, pre-purchase inspector gave it thumbs up, she buys it, in 2 weeks bilge full, pull boat, patches on patches, basically needed a new hull below the waterline. Poor girl is freaking out, then notices for an extra 50 she had the insurance. Dunno if she fixed it or took the purchase price and moved on.

Who pays for the survey
@nbspudley
@nbspudley Месяц назад
Hi Trevor, it’s the buyer who pays for the survey. Usually in the region of £1000 for the lift out of the water & the survey. If you don’t then buy it unfortunately it’s lost monies. Usually if there are issues found that need fixing then the buyer can try to negotiate with the seller to get them to have them fixed & you pay the agreed price or offer less based on the costs for the remedial work & you get it done then once purchased.

It needs to be the buyer. Also the buyer should not take any recommendations from the broker, or seller. Even though most surveyors are fairly ethical, there are some who are “bought” by the promise of repeat business through brokers. As a buyer you do not want any conflict of interest.
@nbspudley
@nbspudley 21 день назад
@@captratty2167 agreed. We didn’t ask for any recommendations for a surveyor from the seller/broker. We found our own & if you know someone who used them themselves & were happy even better.
